I thought I would post this thread to see what kind of responses it generates. Here is the question, Which car do you think is the greatest racecar of all time? Can be from Rally, Lemans, or Touring cars.

If a Carrera GT is just a bit too dull for you, and a Pagani Zonda is too common, then may I recommend that you investigate the Porsche 962 which is currently for sale at the Elms Collection. These type of cars do not come up for sale very often, so Lusso investigated.

The Porsche 962 is a legendary car, having numerous Le Mans and IMSA wins to its name. The car was a sports-prototype racing car built by Porsche to replace the 956. It was introduced at the end of 1984 and quickly gained success through privateer owners. It is very rare that a 962 comes up for sale, nevermind one that has a tax disc!

This particular model has the honour of gaining the approval of 962 maestro Derek Bell, and was constructed between 2001 and 2005 by ex Sauber engineer Ernest Schlaepfe in New Zealand. The build cost was 2million dollars, and was built utilising an aluminium genuine IMSA chassis supplied by Porsche Le Mans winner Hurley Haywood.

The interior even has leather trimmed bucket seats with six point harnesses, a collapsible steering column and detachable Momo racing wheel. The body is the 'long tail' version in full carbon fibre. The quality of engineering and workmanship is second to none.

The car is fully road legal, coming with a valid UK V5 and MOT documents. The car is a barely disguised racing car for the road, and has to be the ultimate car to ever carry number plates and makes a Ferrari F40 seem quite sedate.

Investment wise, this car's value is only ever going to increase.

The Honda
Civic.

Damn right.

In the mid 80's the AE86 vs Civic vs what DIV. 1 of Group A was all about.

You guys gotta remember that because of things like homoligation, Vtec and 4AG made their way into street cars. HRC had already developed a two lobe system for their bikes in an attempt to make the 4stroke as fast as a 2stroke. Honda had to develop a 1600cc engine for this class. Hmm a twin cam 1.6L Vtec motor???? I wonder what that is? ;)

None of the 962...dauer, Koenig, Schuppan or DP were legal for U.S. But that didn't stop Mclaren F1 buyers. :D

Pretty Much Spot on. Only 2 errors (1 for sure, 1 maybe). The 1972 Can-Am champion car was sponsored by L&M Cigarettes, and then rebodied and sponsored by RC cola in 1973. The other is the #48 car is a 917/30. Don't mean to nitpick

DIESEL POWER!!

I think the R10 is a good car, but they would be taken to the next level in my eyes if they had some real competition. peugeot took it to them this year, but reliability hurt them. If someone like a Porsche or Volkswagen or Ferrari put some cash into an LMP1 car, I don't think the Audi would be so dominant.

Here is the issue..... VW and Audi are under the same group that makes those decisions and it wouldn't make financial sense to market TDI with two different LMP1 cars.

Porsche can be considered the tip of this umbrella as they will have 51% of VW group by the end of this year. It's just too much money to throw at a sport that you already dominate. Besides, Porsche isn't in desperate need to bring back their racing pedegree as they are still king in LMP2 in ALMS and ELMS.

Ferrari is busy with their F1 program. (Something they fund without the help of Fiat) and are using Maserati to handle the higher levels of sports car and GT racing duties. The Vitaphone MC12 just won the Spa 12 hours. But the biggest hurdle for Ferrari/Maserati is the fact that the diesels are the cars to beat and i doubt the Prancing Horse and the Trident have any desire to build a diesel.

The mark that has the higgest chance to take the fight to Audi is Jaguar. With them being purchaced by TATA, Ratan TATA has said he would like to see Jaguar return to the pinnacle of sports car racing but it is unclear which class. This is all speculation though.
