i am really thinking about a 2g eclipse gs-t or gsx. but does anybody have bad experince with them ? also i want this car to have a decent 1/4 mile (mid 14s) and handle well. so i think this will fit the bill andody want to warn me or give me any advise ? thanks

2 words: TIMING BELT. My 96 jumped timing because i did not know it was bad... Crushed the valves... So if you get one, get that timing belt inspected, or even better just get it changed anyway. Other than that, DO IT!

my eclipse had electrical problems, no1 could tell me what it was so i had to change the alternator every month.... after it was stolen and rolled and all kinds of good stuff i found out it was a relay... but none the less it was a moody car...

Crankwalk didnt happen to that many of the 2g cars. Most were fine. As far as the electrical problems, that's the first I've heard of that. Not saying it didnt happen, I've just never had it happen to any of the hundreds of DSM's I've worked on. There's nothing wrong with buying a 2g GSX or GST. Just be picky when it comes to finding the one you want. This means buying one that is stock, or has very minimal mods done to it. Most people purchased these cars with the intention of racing them, so you dont wanna pick up the ass end of someones project that either never materialized to its full extent, or some backyard mechanics "hobby car." There's another thread right here about the bad rap these car's get sometimes. Scroll to the bottom of the page. For the most part, as long as it's properly maintained, you'll be ok. http://forums.importatlanta.com/showthread.php?t=18315&page=2

what about handling do the oversteer understeer or just suck whats up with the handling because i do live in the mountains and want to have some fun in the curves.

The FWD model isnt for you then. It understeers pretty horribly. It can be made to handle "fairly" well, but in the end, it still doesnt have IRS on it. The GSX is pretty good for what it is. You're not gonna be killing everything in your path with stock suspension, but the GSX has fully IRS, and doesnt have the trailing arm like its GST brother. Both suffer from body roll, but the GSX is much more forgiving and can power through turns pretty easily. At any rate, in regards to the GSX, if you purchase a coilover kit, and get your suspension dialed in for what you want it for, it'll be right on point. My advice to you is if you want something that handles, dont even bother looking at GST's. GSX all the way.

Exactly. You WILL have to know about the 4G and the awd components. Luckily there are alot of resources out there for you and shops around here that know what they're doing.

Yeah, not to mention you could look at a 4G sideways and it would make more power, LoL. Very susceptible to mods.

You should go with a RS-T. I mean its alot cheaper on insurance and it will out run a stock GST and some can beat a GSX (like mine). The 420a engine can handle boost so anyone who says they cant just dont know what they are talking about. I have had mine for a year now and boostin 11 lbs daily. Plus you can also make it into a sleeper and really shock people. Another bonus is mine is for sale!!!!

There are so many misconseptions about the 2nd generation DSM's. If people actually did the homework to see for themselves instead of listening to hear say and rumors, you would actually see that most of the causes for things like crankwalk are initiated by trial and error of certain upgrades. The pros out way the cons hands down. I have been and still am the proud owner of several DSM's. I say do your own research and learn for yourself.

The sun does shine on a dogs ass some days. For the amount of money you will spend to build an RS or GS then turbo it, you should just buy the turbo car in the first place. BEEN THERE DONE THAT.... With the right amont of money you can build a "solid" 420a motor to produce enough power to haul ass, but you could put half of that upgrading money into an existing factory turbo car and make that much more power. These are of course my own $.02 so you can take it to heart or not but I am willing to take the time to introduce you to the right people who can and will show you the light...lol...

don't waste your money and time, the 4g63 is a great motor and pretty easy to extract a decent amount of power out of and pretty strong. and very inexpensive to get some really good track times out of w/ AWD. and props to george for his FWD drag car. the 420a motor is the same motor out of the neon am i correct? you can even read in SCC and they will tell you to not waste your time or money but if you really want a turbo neon motor then contact hahnracecraft.com

I never said it would be cheaper but the looks you get when you tell people its a RS-T and the money I save in insurance I spend on performance parts. In my eyes if your going to built a RS-T then Hahn Racecraft is the place to go. Prices are a little high but they are worth it. And I agree as far as cheaper built up a 4g63 is the way to go. I just liked being different. I gotta sell mine but trust me I dont want to but with college and everything she gotta go. Put word out that she's for sale $6500 in great condition.

Man so much bad info in this thread. Crankwalk is over exaggerated. I have a 2g no crankwalk problems. If your that worried about crankwalk find an early 2g (an early 95) they are suppose to be safer as far as crankwalk goes  Trannys are just fine, I beat and launched the shit out of my stock tranny...I'm talkin 6k awd launches at least every weekend and it held up for 2 years and is currently running in my friend's vr-4 galant. Forget the na motors, they will cost you more money to make them fast, if all your looking for is mid 14s, then a stock GSX is for you. Although it might be a little slower than when it brand new, a few normal maintenace repairs and a K&N filter will get mid 14's.
6k is a fair price, remeber talon's usally run about 1k cheaper than eclipses (just a brand thing I guess). If your looking for a good place to buy one, I like to get them of of dsmtuners, because you can search for that users previous post and see what problems he has encountered with the car and what he does with it. Oh, it has ok handiling (at least the GSX, never driven a GST) but like I said if your just looking for 14s, then you don't really need to spend any money on power mods, you can use that moeny for upgrading suspension.
As for a jdm engine swap, it's all just for ricers to brag, just so thery can say they have an evo engine. it is not worth the money, you could build a better motor for that price. And the cyclone manifold is also a waste, it might flow a little better but not nearly worth the price. Not to mention you will need a different ecu to run the cyclone mani.

i'm assuming that you were interested in an eclipse b/c it looked "pretty and cute" and then some "ricer" told you what he heard right?....a lot of rumors about crankwalk on the 2g...the actual percentage on crankwalk was really low...like one tuning tuner said...do your homework

SleepingTalon

Once again I reitterate, most 2g's didn't have crankwalk problems. The problem is serverly overexaggerated. I've had 6 bolt's walk on me so does that mean I can classify the 6 bolt as a crankwalking motor? Realistically speaking, there are things that you can look for that will INCREASE the chances of the car having this problem, many of which have been discussed in other threads, but it's NOT a big issue. It's more mind boggling than anything because there are so many theories involving it. If you wanna learn more, you should go to NABR and post. If you're not a member, then search the archives. To simply say it's a problem associated with all 2g's is just ignorance to the facts.
