Legendary cranking on Gears film

Although some game-to-film adaptations have hit show-stopping snafus in production, the Gears of War film is proceeding with the efficiency of a well-oiled machine. Since New Line Cinema picked up the rights to imprint Marcus Fenix's glowering mug on celluloid last year, a number of high-profile names have been attached to the Epic Games property, including director Len Wiseman (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26439382) (Live Free or Die Hard; Underworld: Evolution) as well as writers Chris Morgan (Wanted; The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) and Stuart Beattie (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26319561) (Collateral; 30 Days of Night).

Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117989445.html?categoryid=13&cs=1) is reporting today that Legendary Pictures has signed on to cofinance and coproduce the film. Aside from the financing arrangement, no new details concerning the film were revealed, and Variety noted that New Line parent Warner Bros. Entertainment has yet to set a release date for Gears' box-office debut.

Legendary, helmed by Brash Entertainment cofounder Thomas Tull, has had its hand in a number of big-budget blockbusters in recent years. The production house first made its name with the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman Begins, and gained notoriety with the release of last year's cinematic 300. Legendary is also lending its expertise to a film based on Activision Blizzard's massively multiplayer online role-playing game hit, World of Warcraft (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6151334.html).

The Xbox 360-exclusive Gears of War won universal critical approbation when it was released in November 2006. A sequel to Epic Games' hot property is slated to arrive for Microsoft's console on November 7.

Legendary got ahold of this? hmm... things are looking up for this movie. I had my doubts, but then again we won't know whether it's a complete letdown or not until it's out.

Ratner lords over God of War film

War is apparently on the mind of movie execs. Earlier today, the cogs in Epic Games' Xbox 360-exclusive shooter Gears of War were given a greasing, when Variety revealed (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26507769) that Legendary Pictures--the studio behind 300 and The Dark Knight--had signed on to lend financing and production aid to the gaming property's silver-screen adaptation. Now, the film-conversion for Sony's flagship God of War action-adventure has also received an update.

http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2008/206/Kratos572_embed.jpg (http://javascript%3Cimg%20src=%22images/smilies/redface.gif%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20tit le=%22Embarrassment%22%20smilieid=%222%22%20class= %22inlineimg%22%20/%3Epen_blog_image_viewer%28%272008/206/Kratos572_screen.jpg%27%29;) Revealed in a media blast for MGM's forthcoming RoboCop, Brett Ratner has been attached to direct Universal's God of War. Perhaps best known for his work on X-Men: The Last Stand, Ratner is also responsible for the Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker-starring buddy cop Rush Hour series. Ratner's involvement in the project dates back to late May, when the director revealed (http://geeksofdoom.com/2008/05/29/brett-ratner-god-of-war/) that he was in discussions to helm the project.

As for why Ratner's participation in God of War was confirmed in a media update for RoboCop, the two films share scriptwriter David Self (Road to Perdition, The Haunting) in common.

Sony's teaser (http://www.gamespot.com/video/943928/6194185/god-of-war-iii-official-trailer-1) for Kratos' first journey on the PlayStation 3 was shown during this year's E3 2008. While Sony has kept the project largely under wraps, GameSpot's previous coverage (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/godofwariii/index.html) has more on the mythology-inspired action adventure.

God of War movie: YES!!!!

Brett Ratner: NO!!!!!

i want to see a dark, bloody rated R film -- the way GoW should be! what now, is Kratos going to have a plucky comic-relief sidekick?

I wish del Toro could direct this one... he'd be perfect for it. I know he's quite busy with other projects though.

And as far as the character of kratos goes, i think they should either get Vin Diesel, or Djimon honsou(sp?) from blood diamond. (I know he's black, but Hellboy is red, while Perlman is obviously white, so STFU)

Yea, I can feel you on the guy from Blood Diamond! They'll more than likely use someone who is lame and more in the celeb eye.
