My speedo does NOT work and I'm told I need to replace the speedo cable. My question is (knowing my tach does NOT work as well) should fixing the speedo also fix the tach? Does the tach work off the speedometer? Thanks. Later, QD.

hmm, good question. I know in a friends BMW, the tach works but not the speedo, so i guessing they are separate. not sure about in you car tho. GL

Tach and Speedo are seperate, or at least seperated. The Tach is a speed sensor on the crank, while the Speedo is usually on the output shaft. Unless you've got a very bizarre (And overly complicated) setup, the tach and speedo should be on opposite sides of the transmission from each other.

What kind of vehicle is it? If its a general motors product, it most likely needs an ipc.

If its anything like the EFs, the speedo cable comes out of the transmission, and goes into the back of the Gauge Cluster. it runs through the firewall.
The TACH gets its signal from the Crank Position Sensor or the Cam Position Sensor depending on the year of the car.

My tach I found out, gets its signal from the neg. side of the coil. And the speedo does go into the firewall and screws into the back of the speddometer in the cluster (like you said). But my tach isn't working and the wire is ran to the correct spot. Later, QD.

Since the speedo goes into the tranny and I have an Accord engine and a Civic tranny, I need to get the speedo cable for the Civic, right? Later, QD.

Glad you posted this. My gf just called and said the speedo on her 97 Civic just went out. She called early and said that her CEL came on and then a hour later, this happens. How much is a speed cable and should it b easy to replace?

That one has a VSS that sends an electric signal to the speedo. You will likely have to replace the VSS.

That or the piece inside the trans that drives the VSS broke off. Thats what happened to mine.

VSS is the speed sensor...it goes into the tranny and has a wire that runs to your cluster...her cluster may have just gone bad as well...I would swap it out with another civic cluster just to see if that's what's wrong because that is what happened to mine

QD, if you are using a civic trans go with the civic cable. Is it a 1st or a 2nd gen Civic trans? I don't know anything about the 2nd. gen transmissions, but as long as the cable matches the trans you should be good. I think they all attach to the speedo the same way.
The tach is electrical and you should hook the blue wire to the negative post of the coil. Thats all I had to do when I installed one on my 1200 anyway. Does your Accord engine have points, or electronic ignition?

Well after putting it off for awhile, I finally got a speed sensor for my g/f's 97 Civic auto. Well I put it in and still didnt work. I check the fuses and low and behold it was a burnt fuse. I replace it and still popped, I went all the way to a 30amp and still kept popping. If I'm right, theres a short somewhere correct??If theres a short.....where could it be coming from??The plug going into the speed sensor looks fine from what I could tell. Any ideas??thanks!
my 94 dx,none of the gauges are working and still cant figure out the problem.best of luck to you QD.
