The only thing I have really found wrong with it (other than the design of how cramped everything is under the engine bay) is that it weighs quite a lot. I heard it's like 3700. Def a sexy car tho! :goodjob:

4 door is only like 200lbs more than the 2 door. I would go 2dr but my wife wants 4. I've been waiting for the Rabbit to go TDI...

The DSG transmission is bullet-proof, except for like all V-dubs, the wiring. However my neighbor is a VW tech @ Athens VW and he says the new Rabbits are lightyears more reliable than previous cars.

bc its a diesel you can easily squeeze alot more power out of it with a re-tune.

I'd buy a DSG TDI Jetta, because DSG is nothing but amusing fun and practical for a daily driver 50mpg car. Re-tune, veg oil, full exhaust for a blast of a daily driver with no gas bill.

~taken from another forum~

I like many of you have been looking for a good economical car that won't break the bank. The VW Jetta TDI has been appealing to me because of its high MPG, 45/55 according to the newest models and yet below the hybrid prices. Well, today I went to the Portland Auto Show and saw the 2008 Golf TDI. Estimated MPG is mid 60's!! Thats about 15mpg better than Prius! The price......$14,995. Where do sign up!! Heres the big downer.......its only available in Europe. One thing I found out at the Auto show is that the economical cars are out there but the US won't allow them in because of emmisions, safety, and whatever other lame excuse they can think of. The Golf TDI headed for Europe is the same as the one currently in the US but with an 80hp TDI "Clean Diesel" engine, which actually emmits less carbon than the Prius.

I've been thinking about a veggie tdi for a little while now. I'd be willing to sacrifice some performance for practicality. Even running diesel in it is a lot better than the **** i have to deal with now.

most consumers look at cars in a sex appeal/ power appeal. Since I work on cars I look at how easy it is to repair something if it breaks. VW/Audi/Benz are not easy cars to work on and they do have a lot of stupid designs. They just have a lot of unnecessary parts under the hood.

My MK4 weights 2790 (03 GTI). It does have a carbon fiber hood though, although im sure it doesn't make that much difference. That is tested at my work that has a weigh station.

what professional qualifications do you have that allows you to pass off such statements as facts?

..WHAT?!

It is my personal opinion. We just yanked a 1.8T out of a '00 Golf. They had more useless sh*t on that engine than I have ever seen. They would have multiple hoses/lines from one part to another. Why did they have SO many? Why not just one?

What it seems is, they create these engines on a new desgin. The test it and find MULTIPLE things wrong with it. So they have to add all this other garbage to make it run right.

Manufacturers need to do what honda does, get input from their top techs.

"What should we do here?"
"How can we clean this up?"
"We want this, to fit that while being able to be easily worked on, suggestions?"

etc...

Have you ever worked on cars? Like, multiple cars, not just your own. Honda has some of the best setups ever. See, the engineers dont think when creating or putting parts on a car. We get cars in where a simple O2 is in the tightest possible location and they had an infinite amount of space everywhere else.

CLIFFS-what I am trying to say is, they over engineer a lot of items, not just VW, Ford does it, Jag, Audi, etc...

No, if i was a VW engineer and I KNEW that a lot of those parts were unncessary then I could make that claim. Do I feel as if they are? OHHHH YEA!

Here's another example:

'04 VW Beetle in my shop right now. Just needs a battery. Any other car it'd take about 5 minutes....Not on a VW. It's just like....WHy did they cram in into the engine bay if they didnt have room? Relocat it to the trunk like BMW's do. They just dont think.
