A Car That Runs on Compressed Air (Zero Pollution Motors - Air Car) – Imagine a car that has zero pollution, is cost effective to run, has an 800 mile range, and goes 30,000 miles between oil changes. Well the technology that engineers have been dreaming of for years is now coming to market. Based on designs from Formula One race car engineer Guy Negre, French firm MDI have developed this remarkable compressed air engine (with 50 patents) that delivers impressive statistics:

· Range: 800 miles
· Top Speed: 96 mph
· Oil Changes: Once every 30,000 miles (due to the absence of combusion and residues)
· Operating Costs: $0.03/mile [Editorial note – This seems low but that’s what the conversion $/mi come to. A typical USA vehicle that gets 25 miles/gal using $4/gal gas gets $0.16/mile.]
· On-board compressor – Kicks in above 35 mph to refill the compressed air tank. This uses gas to run a small compressor to refill the air tanks. Or it can be plugged into any 110 Volt power outlet to refill the air tank.
· Estimated MPG: 106 mpg
· Initial domestic model will be a 2010 model, 4-door, 6 seater, using a 75 HP Compressed Air Engine and is intended to be a family vehicle.
· Estimated price: $18,000 to $20,000.

What’s making this far more viable is that Tata Motors, India’s largest automotive manufacturer, inked a deal last year to further develop this remarkable engine for other uses outside of the automotive industry. Plus Tata will market and sell a compressed air vehicle through its dealerships in India. Just as interesting as the engine are the electronics on board. Quoting from a Gizmag article: …The heart of the electronic and communication system on the car is a computer offering an array of information reports that extends well beyond the speed of the vehicle, and is built to integrate with external systems and almost anything you could dream of, starting with voice recognition, internet connectivity, GSM telephone connectivity, a GPS guidance system, fleet management systems, emergency systems, and of course every form of digital entertainment. The engine is fascinating, as is and the revolutionary electrical system that uses just one cable and so is the vehicle's wireless control system. Microcontrollers are used in every device in the car, so one tiny radio transmitter sends instructions to the lights, indicators etc.
