My clutch is going in my EM1 and I thought about payling a little more for the Exedy Stage 1 Organic Clutch and a lighter flywheel but is it worth it on a stock B16? Or should I just stick with the OE replacement? thanks for the suggestions

Update: (based on posts)

How much does the stock flywheel weigh?

Pros & Cons of Exedy Stage 1 Organic vs Comp?

no. A lighter flywheel is going to be a pain to drive for a DD. Buddy had one on his b18 swapped Si and I hated it. Keep to the OE.

No, b16 already doesn't have much torque. Lighten flywheel = loss of torque but gain hp on top. Keep it stock

its worth spending the extra money on a decent clutch.....not an ebay special exedy

Id never buy Exedy personally.

I prefer the Comp Stage 1

Lightweight flywheel, you can go lighter than stock, id go down to an 11 or whatever Competition sells thats in the middle.

Believe it or not, the loss in Tq is minimal, and the gain in acceleration is alot.

You have a b16, you will never make TQ, the way to make your car faster is to get into VTEC as fast as possible, and to accelerate as fast as possible.

First mod i would ever do to a car is a lighweight flywheel. As long as you dont go buy the 7lb fidanza, the drivability will be fine

x2 when i had my 7.5 fidanza...it was super fun..i dont get why people say it sucks driving 7.5 flywheel as a daily..i never had issues

i agree... had a b18 in my old hatch... lightened flywheel and stage 3 clutch... (i did not put these in) and it was horrible driving as my dd..

Was the stage 3 sprung or unsprung? Upgraded pressure plate or not?

Were they both brand new an from the same manufactuer?

Was the clutch broken in properly?

My recommendations for clutches are:
Mild to medium NA engine (150-200whp)
-Competition Stage 2 or Stage 4 SPRUNG if its a daily driver, regular pressure plate

Medium to high NA Engine (220wwhp-250whp)
-Competition Stage 4 Unsprung (you are past the point of daily driving), regular pressure plate

Any boosted car i recommend the Competition Clutch Stage 4. Sprung if its a Daily Driver, UNSPRUNG if its 350whp+. Upgraded pressure plates only should be used in 450-500whp +applications. Dont plan on driving it everyday.

Flywheel wise, i personally like the 9-11lb flywheels for street cars. As long as you get a SPRUNG disk, itll drive fine with minimal chatter. Its the guys running 7lb flywheels with unsprung Upgraded pressure plates that have cars that run like shi.t.

IMO the exedy stage 1 clutch is one of the best clutches I've ever had in any of my DD honda/acura's. I had an exedy stage 1 in my GSR and it was one of the smoothest clutches I've owned. The pressure plate is a little stiffer, so the pedal was slightly stiffer, but not really noticeable. I also had an exedy stage 1 in my 2000 prelude I used to have. It had a jdm type S swap and quite a few other mods. I went through 4 clutches in 60k miles in that car. The first was a competition clutch stage 2. It lasted about 14k miles before the pressure plate started having issues (the fingers were sticking). I replaced it with an ACT stage 2 (or 3, can't remember). It lasted about 15k miles before it started slipping power. I would say I had maybe 10 hard launches on street slicks before that clutch was toast. The next clutch was a cheapo from nopi that I got while I was waiting on the exedy stage 1 clutch and flywheel. It was a piece of **** from the beginning, and as soon as the other parts came in I replaced it with the exedy stage 1. The exedy was still in the car 30k miles later when I sold it. with 30k miles on the clutch it still felt like new. Since that clutch I have only bought exedy stage 1's. A friend of mine has had an exedy stage 1 in his GSR for 4 or 5 years now, and probably put 80k miles on it, and it still doesn't slip or vibrate.

As for the lightweight flywheel, find someone who has one in their car already and take it for a spin around the block to see if you like the way it feels. I prefer lightweight flywheels (not superlight aluminum, but chromoly steel) over standard flywheels.

ive personally seen these ebay clutches explode on 3 different applications, (none of which are worth bragging about) including one of my own, ive used exedy twice myself, once the clutch disintegrated and the other lasted all of 10k miles ...imo exedy=gigantic pos...you get what you pay for, the last time i did a clutch swap in my old civic i went act, after feeling the way my cousins act stage 3 did on his 3XXhp eclipse...not a second of trouble with the boost, i had it on the car for 10k miles and then sold the car

bottom line is why worry about lightweight flywheels if youre just going to mate it to a $100 clutch?

idk enough about them to know honestly... on top of that.. the swap was done well before i bought the car.. i was told it had a 7lb flywheel and a stage 3 clutch... i do not remember what brands now... i think act and exact.. not sure which is which or what they are...

Get a stage 2 comp clutch(buy an oem throwout bearing) and a ITR flywheel(15lbs). The oem b16 flywheel weighs 20lbs.

appreciate it...i'm leaning more towards comp stage 1/2 over the exedy stage 1

and probably a comp 12lb flywheel

Ive got an ACT Extreme pp & clutch disc, probably 50k on it with no problems. ACT doesn't use staged clutches so i dunno what dude ^^^ is talking about.
