i had a boosted b16 and blew it up "ring land's". i was wondering how a d series holds up to boost. i hear all the time about b series but never d series. i am not looking for major horsepower but i liked the feel of boost on my old car. so any info would be appreciated.

why not just get something with vtec so you can have reliable power?

D-series have hella weak rods so you'll need to replace them if you want more power. They're good for about 200-220whp. Just get a good tune and it won't go boom.

d series are good, but you will need head studs they tend to lift them...

save the SOHC bishes ..... Ls rods ,z6 crank, vitara pistons . is a FUN setup ... ls rods can handle 10 psi and vitaras can handle close to 20 psi ... but with stock rods dont go over 8 psi ..

Man. My experience with D series. I have blown 2 motors both of them with stock internals. I ran 10 pounds on both. My last d series never blew, FYI its all in the tune and how you drive it. My first 2, I beat the **** out of them. The only good thing dseries easy replacement and cheap!

d series motors are fun to play around with and are nice because parts are cheap and generally especially easy to find.
i've heard alot of people say b series hold up better. but imo it's all about the tune and how it's driven when preserving a motor.

several d series have VTEC...do some research, i have a built d but im sprayin as opposed to boosting, more reliable for daily driving IMO, d series love boost and spray, im sure mr kidd will chime in, he's built and had his fair share of them and then some

but what turbo. 10lbs. on a 16g would not produce the same power as 10lbs. on gt35r...

uhhh.....
many d-series do have vtec. also, vtec doesn't mark the line between reliable and non-reliable engines. boosted d's can be very reliable if tuned and setup properly, ive put 50k+ on boosted d16z6. i even boosted my d15b2 for a short period of time and it held fine until it started smoking from having nearly 200k!

i'm running a stock d16a6 (shot peened the rods and thats it) with a t-3 @ 10-10.5 psi making 200hp 185ft/lbs. its my daily driver and sees boost everyday. its still running strong even after 15k. d series are reliable just like any other motor it just requires a smart tune and smart set up.

D-Series are pretty fun. My setup has a t3/t4 with a 57/63 trim. I never hit boost and drive it everyday. When i want it that damn thing takes off. Its running 14.3 @ 102mph. Once you get into 2nd it pulls hard. Can beat the s@@t out of a gt mustang in 2nd and 3rd. Thats only on 6 psi also with no tune. Only fmu and 255 fuel pump.

I think it's funny how many people believe the d-series sucks and the b-series is soooo much better. Both motors have there ups and downs. B16's have weak pistons as proven by the original poster. D's seem to blow headgaskets. The D's can handle boost pretty well in stock form (do headstuds since you don't even have to pull the cam). The d's can do 225whp stock and the B16 don't like much over 230whp. Also you will normally make more tq with the D. As for reliablity if it's done right the d will hold up fine. I have a A6/Y7 combo that has over 260k on the bottom end and I run 10psi and make 220whp and beat the **** out of it everyday. Later.

i have a customer runing 8psi on a stock 4 door civic d16z6 and has done fine for over a year now on a street tune. the rods suck as do the pistons. extract those from the equasion and put in good stuff and the horses can go up but the torque will always be lacking...

I'll join in and say I loved my turbo D. I'll probably rather boost a D than a B16 if I had the choice.

.. If I ever get another CRX I'm getting a built D-Series and boosting it; trannies are way easier to find & a lot cheaper too. D-Series parts are everywhere!
