AUTOBLOG......

Professional drifting series, Formula D, is trying to quickly win over fans and competitors in order to become one of the top forms of motorsport in the United States. As folks have learned in the markets this past year, though, rapid growth does not come without some giant bumps in the road. It looks like Formula D has now slid into a wall with a few of its teams. Confusion surrounding the series rule book has come to a head in discussions at Drifting.com. The rules state that any change to a vehicle's OEM suspension design must be approved by Formula D. Of course, a visual inspection of every car lined up for a run at a Formula D event proves that no one is utilizing 100% OEM suspension components. Aftermarket coilovers, adjustable control arms and urethane bushings are all-too-,common modifications seen throughout the pits. Therefore, there must be a list available to competitors outlining the approved components for all competing vehicles. No such list is available, however. That means teams have no method of verifying that other competitors are following the rules, other than the fact an entry passed Formula D's own tech inspection. Current discussion is making a case for the use of vehicle technical sheets as found in series such as SCCA Speed World Challenge to list all allowable modifications for approved competition vehicles.

One particular team lies behind the call for rule revisions, while other concerned competitors back up their request for clarification. The vocal team is the group behind the Super Autobacs Nissan Skyline, which was recently deemed ineligible for competition by Formula D. The series organizers claim the Skyline features illegal front suspension modifications by using the OEM parts off a Nissan Laurel. However, the RWD Scion tC campaigning in the series is eligible despite also using suspension parts from another Toyota vehicle that shares the same chassis. The rules become particularly unclear when other vehicles are allowed to run with obviously altered suspension setups. 350Zs have altered the mounting points of their rear axles and Chevrolet Corvettes have converted from leaf springs to coilovers. Hopefully, Formula D can learn from this tussle and develop a fair and documented method of approving vehicle,s rather than leaving everyone in the dark.

Sounds like a bunch of bull**** politics to prevent a team from being successful...

I HAVE ALWAYS FELT FORMULA D TO BE A JOKE ANYWAY AS OVER THE YEARS DRIVERS SAM HUBINETTE AND RHYS MILLEN GET TRASHED BY IGNORANT FANS FOR DRIVING AMERICAN CARS. THE REASON I ATTENDED DRIFT ATLANTA EARLIER WAS TO SEE THE CARS BECAUSE I HAVE GROWN TIRED OF THE OVER BIASED SYSTEM USED TO JUDGE DRIFTING. WITH THIS MOVE BY FORMULA D, IT WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME MORE REASON NOT TO ATTEND. IT IS A REAL SHAME.

I'LL ALSO ADD THAT I NEVER KNEW FORMULA D HAD ANY RULES AT ALL REGARDING CAR TUNING. GOING TO LOCAL EVENTS AND SEEING UNUSUAL SWAPS WHATEVER THEY ARE AND WILD BODY AND CHASSIS MODIFICATIONS, IM SURPRISED THAT SUSPENSION MODS POSE A PROBLEM.

When they made that rule that said if you drop one tire you lose all your points I was done with Formula D. They should give the driver more points for that D1 does. And I will never forget this. 06 Formula D the judges disqualified Die because he pull the e-brake too long WTF is that **** haven they ever heard of a long slide?????

FD is a joke and a half. there is so many cars that have similar suspension changes and are never questioned. hell, the TC is originally a FWD car. theres no way the susension can be even close to the stock geometry.

Well the body is a tC, but the underlying car is some Japanese AWD car on the same platform that they just converted to RWD.

its all based on money

takatori was doing too good for being new to FD and people wanted him out, same **** happens with gitten except falken knows how to pull strings. Drifting is rigged to make it more popular, anyone who takes the sport serious knows this. Hence the reason why only noobs have aspirations to be big, cause experienced drivers know it aint gonna happen.

last year i watched that skyline and the turbo seemed to not spool up fast enough to get him through the horseshoe!!! it was bad and he had no chance cause it happened everytime in like second gear!

Well, there maybe a possible reason......

The Scion was FWD to start and would necessitate a suspension revision to convert it to RWD. Therefore the Scion may have been allowed to participate with that suspension mod due to the FWD to RWD conversion. The Skyline did not need special provisions for changing the drive layout and therefore, may not have been allowed the modification.

Not saying it is right, just putting out a possible reason..... :2cents:

You make a good point, and are fairly accurate. Accurate enough that I wont emphasize any more, but you got it pretty good.

FD wants the series to seem like any regular kid can get in his 240 and compete with the big boys, what it fails to do is tell people that some people can get away with modified stock cars, while others are having tube framed fully built race cars and that isnt fair. 89 and older are the only cars that can non-factory modifed suspension, yet JR has his steering angle set at an extra 35* on a 2006 Ford Mustang. MacNamara has a tube framed (NON OEM) right hand drive converted sky with a v8 in it. Nothing besides the exterior on that car is stock, yet FD allows it. But when a so-so D1 driver comes in kicking ass and taking names, all of a sudden him not running a r34 front strut makes him illegal to compete and thats utter bull****. FD is trying to get drifting bigger, but to the people that really know whats going on its only pushing us away. And now that D1 isnt coming to Florida or Jersey this year, it makes it that much worse. Im sure all this will clear up, but people are so ready to get drifting mainstream as a regular sport that they are willing to cut corners and allow the big names (JR especially, he has a HUGE fan base because of the car he runs) that they are selling themselves short.

If anyone saw the Japan Vs. America battle between Kazama and Gitten, Kazama never screws up, and then just straightened out like he did so on purpose... b/s
