recently there has been talk about making most speed limits to 55mph. They say it is to save gas. But, what ive experienced is that I have to have my foot always on the gas just to maintain 55mph, while if im going 55+ i can use my momentum (mass*velocity) to maintain cruising speed and dont even have to touch the gas for about 10 seconds before I have to push the pedal again.
So what method uses more gas?
keep your foot on the gas to maintain speed because you have little momentum
go faster, but use your momentum to allow you to coast for a while

i personally cruise at 60mph with the cruise control on if i wanna save gas...works best for me bro.
just don't go flooring it everywhere, thats where the wear and tear and gas usage comes in play. Steady on the gas and don't accelerate too hard.
oh, and when i'm anal about sving gas that if I have to, I accelerate down hill so I can coast up hill....if that makes sense...

i hate when people slam on the brakes down hills, because you have to go up them again! you can coast a great distance by using gravity power.

Draft the car infront of me, short shift, lift-coast-brake, etc.
...nvm we are talking about the street. Use a steady throttle and only hit the brakes when needed.

Trust me if they lower the speed limit it wont be for gas. City revenue will be that reason.

The ECU in most fuel injection systems are programmed to go into an open loop mode when cruising at 60 or 70 mph in 5th and save gas. If they lower the speed limits, a LOT of car will burn more gas simply due to the fueld delivery of their engines. True, the RPM will be lower, but the lack of the programmed constant load at 60-70mph will alter the method of fuel delivery and make mileage worse. It's partially related to the reason cars get better highway mils than city. True, the city requires stop/go and vast momentum adjustments, but most city driving (shifting at 2500) keeps the RPM way lower than average top gear cruising at 75 but requires more fuel to combat the change in load and throttle position and the ECU preps the injectors to be ready for these changes in demand making them a little less steady and a bit thirstier.

engine speed (rpms) and drag also come into play

x2. Just like the extra 12 on every ticket for "gas used to presue(seplling)"
I just cruse at 2-3grand in every gear no matter the speed lol.
Oh and to answer the Op's questin, it depends on the car and driver lol...
