Need help ASAP on regestering a car

so the car in question is an 86 corolla. the car has been in the family for the last 7 years. and sat for around 5 before we bought it. we never got it registered because we never had a title, but now we dont have to have one. BUT the car has never been registered in the state of GA. we got the car through an auction, and came to find out that the last time it was registered was in Tenn in 1997. so my question is, will i need a court order, or will i be ok with just going to the tag office with the bill of sale.

Take it to the tag office with the bill of sale and proof of insurance and proof it will pass an emissions test. I do NOT recommend driving it to the Emissions Inspection station, instead I would have it towed there to be honest, as dumb as that sounds. Get the test and take everything to the local tag office. That should be all you need if it is old enough that you do not HAVE to have a title. If it's not you may need to get a court order showing that you have had ownership of the car for a length of time, typically that can be done by affidavit and such, but I don't know the specifics.

i think im going to get "emmisions" from my dad. im fairly possitive she wont pass. but i wanna do that b4 i get insurrance and what not. i just dont wanna pay for insurrance if i cant drive the car. my dad said it could take a while to get a court order for the car, but im not sure

go to tag office, ull prolly have to pay all previous taxes tho.

bill of sales lots of money and a form they have at the tag office to file for a title. that should be all u have to do just to get the title. once u get the title or while waiting for it u can get the emission insurance and that together or hell u can do it all at once its up to u.

NP for the help but in all seriousness, there's a difference between registering and titling a car.

You can go and have the car titled with the Bill of Sale and wait for the title to come back to you before you register the car. Or if you get your insurance and emissions together, you can take the Bill of Sale and have it Registered off of that as well. Newer vehicles you MUST have the Title before it can be registered, and the cut-off date isn't fresh in my memory so I don't know for certain.

Your car CANNOT be Registered (And thus legal to drive) in the state of Georgia without emissions certification or exemption and valid proof of insurance for the vehicle. Your car CAN be Titled without it even being a working car. Hope that clarifies a bit, you may just be seeking a Title until she's road-worthy.

Newer vehicles you MUST have the Title before it can be registered, and the cut-off date isn't fresh in my memory so I don't know for certain.

Nope...1985. I haven't seen the year change in 3 years, so I think its set...not like the rolling 25 years on importing cars

This doesn't cover the entire state. Emissions testing only covers the metro Atlanta area, TMK. The state legislature has tried for several years to mandate statewide emissions testing, but I don't think the population density outside of the the metro area is high enough to necessitate statewide testing.

OP --> The link given by on of the other posters about what needs a title will have all the information that you need to get the title on the your Corolla. My Dad sold a 1989 Chevy 1500 pickup and helped the purchaser go about getting a bonded title.

QD is right its 85 and older. even if you do need to get a bonded/insured title on it it isnt that bad. they go based on the value of the vehicle or a flat 100 bucks which ever is greater. i had to get one on my truck. just get the form call dispatch theyll come look at it fill it out then pay the insurance company the money go to the tag office and thats it. in about 6 weeks youll have a title. but theyll give you the tag and registration that day.
