I'm about to trade my Ls swap for a jdm d15b... i met up with the guy and i saw him run and when he redline shifted a small cloud of black smoke splurted out... is that a sign of a bad motor??????

why are u down grading to a 1.5. but anyway it was probably just a hard shift and if u didn't smell oil u are probably good cause usually it's clear blue smoke

no, black smoke means that the engine is not jdm and is about to end itself.

x2. If you look at high performance cars shifting hard they usually will have that common trait. Most engines run rich anyway on the safe side.

same with diesels. just the unburned fuel.... but I guess that answer has been covered a few times already.
