UGA's popular mascot Uga VI dies of heart failure

Published on: 06/28/08 The University of Georgia's beloved and Churchillian English bulldog mascot Uga VI died peacefully Friday night in Savannah of congestive heart failure after serving nine years on the Bulldog sidelines as the school's winningest mascot.
Uga VI, owned by Savannah attorney Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler, was the biggest in the line of six solid white English bulldogs to serve as UGA's mascot since Uga I became a Georgia football game fixture in 1956.

Uga VI, who became UGA's mascot in 1999, died Friday night from heart failure in Savannah.
"He was a good one," Seiler said in a prepared statement. "What can I say? He had a marvelous record. He was a very strong and healthy dog. He was the biggest of all the dogs, and he had the biggest heart. It just played out."
Damon Evans, UGA director of athletics, bestowed the highest praise on the beast that he could Saturday, in a statement:
"Uga VI was a damn good mascot and a damn good dog," said Evans.
With the passing of one Uga there's always speculation which bulldog is heir to the throne, which comes with a few perks, including an air-conditioned dog house, travel by Delta Airlines to away games, celebrityhood (Uga V was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1997 as the nation's best mascot) and a fanbase that's paparazzi-like in its obsession.
"People pet him so much his head gets sore," Seiler once said of his line of Ugas. "He's like a politician who shakes too many hands."
Seiler said Saturday that the "lineage is taken care of" and would be announced by Seilers and the UGA athletic association later.
Uga VI will be buried in a marble vault in the Southwest corner of Sanford Stadium with his ancestors in private ceremonies expected to be held early next week.
There had been speculation earlier this year that the 2007 season might have been Uga VI's last as a mascot because of his age. He would have turned 10 on July 22.
Seiler said in a statement Saturday he noticed Uga VI was breathing heavily shortly after Seiler arrived home from work Friday evening. He was taken to Dr. Stanley Lester, the family's veterinarian, who consulted with Dr. Bruce Hollett at UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine.
"I noticed a little congestion in his throat, which usually is not cause for alarm," said Seiler in the release. "I gave him a bath, which he always loved, to cool him off. After that, I called Dr. Lester, whose office is about a four-minute drive from our house.
"His heart just played out. He suffered no pain and died peacefully."
UGA president Michael F. Adams said in a statement Uga VI will be "missed and remembered by UGA alumni and friends everywhere."
During his reign as mascot, the UGA football team compiled a record of 87 wins and 27 losses, captured the 2002 and 2005 Southeastern Conference championships, and won six of eight bowl games, surpassing Uga IV's record of 77-24-4.
By far the biggest of the Ugas — he weighed 65 pounds, more than twenty pound heavier than his father — his full name was pretty hefty, too: "Uga V's Whatchagot Loran?"
That's what Georgia radio play-by-play announcer and voice of the bulldogs Larry Munson says when he's trying to get more information from sideline reporter Loran Smith.

His actual father. Its a "lineage" because the family that breeds the UGA dogs breeds them so that they are all related and then buried in the stadium in the marble monuments. I think thats part of what makes it so special.

Tim Tebow didn't deserve the Heisman either, that was totally meant for McFadden. Tim Tebow posted up a season with 4 losses with a Florida team that comes with a lot of 5 star recruits, easy to make you look good. McFadden beat the National Champion, LSU, with a mediocre team with zero passing game, McFadden with the aid of Felix Jones was that entire team.


Oh and look at the overall record, UGA is winning in the rivalry.

Florida is simply an extension of the North, it only fits into the SEC because of a, i will admit, good athletics program that has formed a lot of very interesting and fun to watch rivalries. I would say the personality of the school fits better with the ACC though.

I understand the word, I was questioning your use of it. Who cares if your team's school is at the top in academics unless you have a degree from there. You must be a tech fan... you guys are always sore losers.

There is no other teams i like, i don't actively cheer for places like UVA or Texas; but i like to see them do well considering those as of now are the places i'm wanting to attend for graduate school.

On top of that its possible to be smart and cool, 50% of the kids i saw at Tech were World of Warcraft junkies. I don't know if you saw the signs posted up at the UGA v. GA Tech game but it said the likes of "give me your lunch money" and "GA Tech loves World of Warcraft"... i think the jokes have some factual basis.



Oh and for sports... I believe UGA won the sugar bowl last year, got to the finals in the college world series, won the SEC in both basketball and baseball, Got to the big dance and give Xavier a run for the money and almost beat them, Were ranked #1 consistently throughout the Golf Season until finishing 3rd or 4th with a not up to par (no pun intended) showing at nationals, and winning Gymanstics, equestrian, and tennis as NCAA Champs.

And yes i have mentioned UVA, UNC, Vandy, and Texas, i am considering all of them like i said. Even places out West like UCLA and USC i'm debating whether or not i would like those or not too. I don't know about you but i apply a lot of places before i make a deciison... works out better then a shot in the dark. The point was that any place that is ranked and hard on academics is more fun then Tech, my friend tells me funny stories all the time from Duke and how much fun they have there when it is well known that is a school of mental perfectionists.

The basketball is not good, that was a fluke last year i will give you that, GA Tech of recent is nothing to brag about either.

Gymnastics... 4 years in a row NCAA Champions.

Tennis... They have been the top contender every single year with Yale for the past 3 or more decades now.

Golf... they are the exact same way as Tennis, UGA has one of the best programs in the country it is not a fluke, They have kids who go and compete in the PGA tour all the time. I remember seeing on ESPN that a guy named Bubba came out 3rd overall in a big PGA tournament.


UGA consistently also ranks as one of the top 10 college sports programs overall for the past few years, and has won 30+ national titles


And as for midtown being there??? Downtown Atlanta is a whole different animal these days, midtown is very fruity, and Buckhead is still pretty nice though. But its for like mid twenty, late twenty singles. Any kid at Georgia Tech i can assure you would not fit in that environment. All of my friends at Tech have never once mentioned going into the clubbing scene down there, maybe a bar or two that might be designated as a college bar right next to campus but thats it.





And i'm not doubting you found good times at tech, i'm just saying raise your standards.

And how do i interpret they are the **** in and out?????? Are you serious man????? UGA has won 6 out of 8 bowl games under Mark Richt, two SEC Titles, and i believes 2 or 3 sugar bowls.

The basketball is not good, that was a fluke last year i will give you that, GA Tech of recent is nothing to brag about either.

Gymnastics... 4 years in a row NCAA Champions.

Tennis... They have been the top contender every single year with Yale for the past 3 or more decades now.

Golf... they are the exact same way as Tennis, UGA has one of the best programs in the country it is not a fluke, They have kids who go and compete in the PGA tour all the time. I remember seeing on ESPN that a guy named Bubba came out 3rd overall in a big PGA tournament.

UGA consistently also ranks as one of the top 10 college sports programs overall for the past few years, and has won 30+ national titles

And as for midtown being there??? Downtown Atlanta is a whole different animal these days, midtown is very fruity, and Buckhead is still pretty nice though. But its for like mid twenty, late twenty singles. Any kid at Georgia Tech i can assure you would not fit in that environment. All of my friends at Tech have never once mentioned going into the clubbing scene down there, maybe a bar or two that might be designated as a college bar right next to campus but thats it.

My roommate at USC had a 4.0 and was a triathalete whos dad went to UGA Law School and had logged 100+ hours of community service. He didn't get in, so if you want to call me dumb, realize that it is harder to get into UGA now. I didn't try nearly as hard as i should have in highschool.

And in college i have a 3.7 which is well in the median of the 25-75% if not over it for those schools and i have a lot of alumni connections through school and highschool friends and employers. And how do you know that all i care about is partying??? have you met me??? :thinking: I didn't think so, get off your high horse. Lets not worry about me or my future, the problem is that you have no respect.
