Thrashers trade Dany Heatley
He asked to be traded so that he could have a fresh start

Published on: 08/23/05

The Thrashers finalzed a trade that that sends star right wing Dany Heatley to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for right wing Marian Hossa, 26, and defenseman Greg de Vries, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

It appears that Heatley, 24, the former NHL rookie of the year, who received three years probation in February for pleading guilty to misdemanor vehicular homicide in the death of teammate Dan Snyder, had asked to be traded so that he could have a fresh start somewhere new.

Reached at her home in Calgary, Heatley's mother Karin said she did not want to comment. It seems the trade came together today when Hossa avoided arbitration by signing a three-year $18 million contract. He will make $5 million this season.

Under the league's new salary cap, Ottawa could not - or was not willing - to retain Hossa at that price. The trade likely allows them to keep defenseman Wade Redden, about whom trade rumors have swirled, also for financial reasons.

Over the last four seasons, Hossa has averaged 36 goals and has been one of the leading scorers for the Senators, who have been among the best teams in the NHL.

Questions have surfaced as to whether Heatley, drafted second overall in 2000, can regain the form that allowed him to score 41 goals and total 89 assists in 2002-03, the year he won MVP of the All-Star Game.

During the lockout, he suffered a serious eye injury, for which he must wear a visor for the remainder of his career, and his production slipped for Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup and 2005 World Championships.

So what stops you form bein a fan now? Ppl get traded all the time, and that is why i hate professional sports. They would only be better if Don King was the GM for every team, so after every win he can say Only in America and pull out a million dollars and give it to the loser.

Whats the big deal. Not like Thrashers are actually good, I mean like if Jordan wanted to be traded during the mid 90s now THATS a tragedy. This..bah.
