damn you beat me to it.

Autoblog article.....

Tadge J. Juechter, Corvette's chief engineer, announced this morning that Jim Mero, GM's development engineer, drove the ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4. According to the GMNext blog, the run took place earlier this morning and that conditions were good on the track, with the exception of a strong headwind down the main straight. Mero mentioned that he felt there were a few places where he could have gone faster, although no details were provided about why and where.

Juechter makes it clear that the ZR1 that lapped the 'Ring was instock trim, with the exception of safety and communications equipment. As such, the ZR1 was wearing the same Michelin Pilot Sport 2s found on the production model, the chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs and the unmodified engine was running on pump gas.

The lap began with a rolling start – which falls in line with current industry practices – and the time was confirmed both through an electronic timing system and two hand-held stopwatches. The ZR1 team will be posting a video of their run when they return from Germany and we'll be keeping our eye out for it when it's online the week of July 7th.

horray. I love the GT-R, but Also love the ZR1 as well. Glad to see it performs that well, not to mention it's on the PS2 tires as well.

I want to see the new results after revised strategies and runs.

the ZR1 is at $110K Retail right?

If it's so (w/o mark-ups), and if the GT-R can't best the price for less than 100K, I can foresee that the ZR1 is going to come out on top

So what's the specs for the GTR Vspec? The stock GTR was 7.29 but Nissan said that the V spec was quicker. Not to mention lighter, powerful and more expensive.

The test driver also said the ZR1 had more time left in it.

I thought the stock GTR was a 7:38 lap time. Is there an official 7:28 lap time verified by equipment or just handheld stopwatches?

Awesome! Gotta love the ZR-1 baby. GM hit the spot!

I would much rather have a ZR1 then a Z06 just due to the rarity, badassness, and extra bodywork (CF parts).

I do agree the Z06 motor is nice though, but I would boost it either way.....a Z06 motor with a supercharger would be the win in a ZR1 chassis.

All i can say is

IT BETTER HAVE RUN FASTER THAN THE GTR

Like this is a surprise? Plus all the people that will now start bashing the GTR, again, 2 different cars, 2 VERY different price tags.

Just like guys that were bashing on the Porsche 911 , its a $130k car compared to the GTR $75k car.

This Vette is going to be going for $120K+.

Congrats to the Vette Team, but i dont see these cars selling as much as the GTR, and the GTR is still VERY close to it.

IMO the clear winner is still the GTR. I mean who spends $40,000 for 3 seconds faster?

Price, Performance, Styling the GTR is still king, SO FAR.

IMO

Oh and sure the GTR is going to have a $20,000 markup or more, but thats irrelevant, im sure the ZR1 wil have markups too. Just like the First s2000s were going for $50,000

Nemesis

IIRC BASE MODEL is $71K and the High End model is $73k.

Now you cannot get them for that right now, only a few people got them at "sticker"

Most dealerships charged a $10,000-30,000 "dealer handling fee".

Just like im sure the ZR1 will be marked up

No word on the GTR VSPEC pricing or even when its coming to the US.

The ZR1 is the fastest this month... but with all these new cars coming out that have been speculated to run in the 7:20's, it won't be long before something else beats it. It will probably either be:
1) GTR v-spec- I doubt it will be more than just a few seconds faster than the base GTR...
2) Lexus LF-A- looks promising
3) 2009 Porsche GT2 with PDK (09 carrera S with PDK ran 7.50, where as the 08 911 twin turbo ran 7.49 with standard transmission).
4) 2010? Acura NSX- They've already said they are going to do what it takes to be fastest.
5) any of the other super cars in the works.

i dont think you can clearly say who is a winner with a only a three second difference of time.yeah you can but bear with me here. with rolling starts, driver error, wind BS on the straits and a bunch of other factors i say it is whatever cuz they are both bad ass cars.

what's funny to me is that some of the times that different cars have posted really show that HP is not the main factor. For example, the Ferrari F430 F1 runs the 'ring in 7:55, where as the 2005 NSX-R runs it in 7:56... There is over a 100hp difference between the two...

It's probably worth mentioning that the ZR1 will be more easily modifiable than the GT-R. Last I heard (and I didn't really look into it very much, so please correct me if I'm wrong), the GT-R doesn't like it if you even try to change the wheels to something other than stock. The ZR1 doesn't have all of the same techno-wizardry hoops to jump through. The ZR1 goes fast through brute force as has always been the American way, rather than relying on a myriad of computers to extract every last bit of grip from the pavement. Seems like there's more to be easily gotten out of the Vette and less out of the GT-R.

Basic mods on the two cars and the ZR1 margin of victory will grow considerably I would think.

Not to mention, the driving experience should be a lot more kick-ass in a car with a hefty blown V8 and a "real-man's gearbox" as opposed to driving the uber-robot that does the driving for you.

The prototype Nissan GT-R V-Spec, wearing the "Victory Specification" designation reserved for the ultra high-performance Nissan GT-R, has been caught lapping the famed Nürburgring at an incredible, if not simply unbelievable, 7:25 per lap.

In contrast to the standard Nissan GT-R, that made the run around the 'Ring in 7:38, the GT-R V-Spec has a new front splitter, modified rear spoiler, and different wheels. A more extensive use of carbon fiber has reportedly reduced the weight by upwards of 330 pounds. Of course, Nissan engineers also tweaked the twin-turbo powerplant for another 70 horses... or so.

Its rumored that a Corvette that engineers are calling "wayfasterthanthefreakingGTRVspecette" has been seen lapping the ring in 7:20 per lap.

Reportedly Dale Earnhart JR was heard yelling SUMMM ***** from the drivers seat as he passed photographers.

the thing i posted about the VSpec GTR was from a few months ago.

But in that article they said the GTR ran 7:38 not 7:29. So either their times are wrong or a GTR ran faster at a later date than that article was published.

Depending on the Vspec price tag i bet that is more of a comparison car to the Zr1 than the base GTR.

But still , i could live with the 3 second time difference regardless.

Wonder how the Vette rides compared to the ZR1. Isnt the GTR supposed to be race car but with creature comforts? ive heard the ZR1 is more of an all out race car that Chevy may produce 500 models or less. IIRC thats almost 1/3 of the GTR production cars.

i heard that too about the rims. i also heard that the governor in japan is set at 110mph and the gps in the computer knows if you are at a track or not and will turn it off if it recognized that you are at one. the governor thing is what i heard about models released in japan not sure about the US

Funny how all GTR fanboys paraded about the GTR being to fastest but now that it's been beaten all of a sudden they say speed doesn't matter (which is all the GTR had going for it anyway.)

And why are people betting on Top Gear? Since when did 1 journalist becomes the ultimate decider of a cars worth?

+ results arn't the same everywhere. The F430 is faster than an Enzo around Fiorano but not around the Top Gear track. To many variables play in to it.

1 more thing, this morning i watched a side by side of the built M3 CSL that ran a 7:22.8 next to the GTR's 7:29 lap. You can really see how luck has allot to do with it and that the M3 had three instances where traffic slowed it down while the GTR had clean highway

Try to run these together side by side and try to where both clocks start at the same time.

The M3 CSL 7:22 lap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL7T9BD_Q3k)...............GTR 7:29 Lap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUM4fM-85ZM&feature=related)
