Coob's stuff (at least mine) takes 45 seconds to change with upgrades. IE: add an exhaust, plug in the AP, scroll down, put in the new tune in. I ran the race gas tune for a few days last week. It took longer to full the car up than it did to change the sioftware program.

fuck AP. Its great for people just looking for simplicity and/or just a bit more power out out of their car. First off, the AP maps are super conservative and typically just add fuel too richen up the AF ratio and throw some more boost into the mix. Get rid of the OL/CL delay and add just a touch more timing (most suby tuners will tell you its typically more advantageous to add less boost and more timing- this probably has something to do with the innefficiency of the small IHI and TD04 turbos that subaru uses at higher boost levels). More power/ safer than stock tune? Absolutely. But its VERY generic and its best results is when used by a professional to tune with. Something any tuner can do with a laptop and Tactrix cable (which is a HELLOVA lot cheaper than $595 for an AP). In short, once the AP is put in its only halfway tuned for $600- you now have to pay an additional $3-600 (varies on tuner) to get fully tuned and realize the full benefits associated with it. I don't doubt you made gains with it just plugging it up. I don't doubt the car is noticeably quicker. I'm just saying you spent $595 and only got halfway tuned (no offense!).
What i meant by upgrades that adversley affect tune is mainly a larger intercooler and possibly a different intake. The intercooler, as you know, doesn't add power. Its a supporting mod. It allows you to add more boost and still keep the intake temps lower despite the turbo's output being hotter. If i add an intercooler post-tune i'm missing a few pounds of boost i could be running. As for the intake- being an educated suby owner you should know that our cars MAF is one picky/finicky mother fucker, and any adjustments or changes to the intake has the potental to throw a well tuned car into a tizzy.
Now i've read (just this past week or two) of two different WELL DOCUMENTED accounts to back up both points.
One guy had a typical Stage 2 setup plus a few other odds and ends and made 228hp and 217tq with a Cobb OTS map. He got tuned and jumped to 238hp and 270tq!!! See what i mean by halfway tuned? And he's not the only one.

If your on NASIOC you've undoubtedly heard of "Unabomber." He had a stage 2 car plus intercooler, header, pulley, and a few other (minor) things with his OTS Cobb map. On the SAME dyno, on the SAME day, BACK TO BACK, he made the same power as several other stage 2 (no intercooler, pulley, etc) wrx's also with the cobb ots map.

I got to thinking about it, Dumont, and there is a large application for the AP in the suby world: 06+ cars.
I'm not too up on the specifics since most engine info/number/software do not pertain to my EJ205 or older ECU, but i do know this: the STOCK tune on these cars is absolutely horrible. Completely stock cars are know to have knock issues, SEVERE OL/CL issues, and just generally not good (performance) driveablilty. Before ANY mod can be done, something needs to be done about the EM since any down pipe will create havoc on the car. Plugging in AP would make the car "stage 1" and "fix" subaru's factory tune issues. (more power can still be had with a full tune, but forget that for a moment). At this point it is now safe to add TBE (and certain intakes if desired) and since you already have the AP to correct prior issues, load the appropriate "stage 2" map into the ecu. Your still in the same boat as being halfway tuned, but that initial $595 allowed you to 1) make slight gains w/o bolt-ons 2) actually made it safe to do bolt-ons and be halway tuned to get a bit more power out of it and 3) its still there as a tool for your tuner to properly tune your car with.
In this case the $600 was worth it because it made itself super useful in several circumstances. So maybe my initail response of "fuck AP" was a bit hasty, but considering my application (02-03 car) i have more options and can be slightly more picky about my tuning solutions. once again- no offense.

All i have to finish is the interior, dress the underhood, the rear tail gate, and do a coat of Auto glym Super resin polish and HD wax. But i want till tuesday to play with it.

Steve - I'd focus more on your trap speed opposed to time. IMO, time only shows how well the car was driven. It's much more impressive to see that you gained 3-5mph than .3 secs. That's just me though. Also, there is nothing wrong with using a MBC unless you're planning on running 25+ psi. Anything beyond that and it's difficult to find a MBc that is capable of holding the pressure.

MPH is (as you know) a clear image of how much power the car is making when factored in conjunction with the vehicle weight. So I agree- better MPH= more power. I'm currently trapping consistently around 94mph (whether i run 14.6, 14.4, or 14.2) so if i atleast trap higher than that, i'm making more power.
My absolute biggest issue at the track is heatsoak. IAT's are crazy high when the car is sitting and the manifold and intercooler get fairly hot and don't cool down till past 1/8mile. I have a few things in place to help limit this unwanted phenomenon.
My second biggest problem is a clutch that can't stand up to 4500-5000 rpm launches. But a new Exedy OE replacement is goin in so this problem should be put at bay as well.
As for the MBC, come on steve, running nothing but an MBC on a stock tune is cavemanish. Face it dude, we're not playing with Starions, talons, and MR2's anymore. There's a fine line between running golden and blowing shit up.
MBC can be safe if you don't go crazy with the boost and know how to drive the car (again part throttle and full boost untuned DO NOT MATCH!). I've known people to run 18psi on untuned ECU's (only 02-03 cars. Starting in 04 the ECU's were no longer MBC friendly) without issue. My balls aren't that big. lol I'm running 15-15.5 peak boost in this hot ass weather. When it gets cooler I'm gonna keep it tamed to about 16psi.
The second (ancient) issue with MBCs is it only addresses boost, not fuel maps or ignition maps meaning there's alot of power left on the table. Something my "software" will fix to some extent.
Plus driving around at part throttle and keeping an eye on the boost gauge making sure the boost doesn't exceed 8-9psi and adjusting throttle input accordingly is a PIA. lol

Nah- if i said MBC are unreliable i was missunderstood. That hand-me-down turbosmart was but this Perrin i'm using now should be fine. I could've gotten a Hallman, but got a really good deal on this one. Besides- I'm a big perrin fan. lol
A tune's not needed i know but if i can do/get it for cheap (in this case less than $200) why not??
How many launches? Maybe two dozen. Ranging from 4k to 5k. Tried once at 6k but the clutch wasn't happy. No two step- yet. I'm debating if i want it and where I want it set. I'm more concerned with shearing the teeth off of second gear (this happens with the 02-03 transmissions) when bringing it into hard boost (not even shifting it hard) than snapping a $100 axle. lol

It was a friend's. I went with him to look at it, and haggled the seller down after pointing out everything I saw that wasn't perfect. Took it for a test drive and did some donuts. Offered them trade in value. On the way home, everything I pointed out decided to break. We got it running again, with a new radiator, hoses, water pump, timing belt, etc... forgot to seal the corners of the valve cover gasket, and the timing belt broke, shredding the timing covers.
So we were just like "fuck it" and tore into it, got a bunch of things powdercoated, got the calipers rebuilt, etc. But without those timing covers and a couple of brackets (like $40 worth of stuff), it's sat for two months. I gave him a pretty reasonable offer for a non-running car, he accepted, so now it's mine.

Going to end up having a little shindig soon. Beer and pizza to anyone who wants to come "help me" fix it. Or I'll just bribe Ripley. :D

Downloading cover/disc images for the Wii with Configurable USB Loader takes significantly longer than it does with USB Loader GX.

Word is, though, that this new loader will let me play Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero without having to take the disks off the shelf.

Gave it a good wash using most of my arsenal of cleaning products. Took off the wheels and cleaned them with Black Magic Titanium cleaner, and scrubbed down wheel wells.
Brought it back to the garage, chamoised all the the water off, hit it with the clay bar, then Meguiar's deep crystal paint cleaner, then the polish, and just now the NXT wax.
Black Magic on exterior trim, protectant and brushes on the interior.
Just need to vacuum the interior now.

Tomorrow's gonna be a good and bad day.

Picked up a "busted" (he said it MIGHT have a blown piston ring from boosting) miata engine with a stand, 5 oil filters, a Nippon fuel filter, and various other little parts for $100 today.
And then proceeded to have the engine twirl upside down on the stand and put 2 dents in my rear quarter panel.

Missing bolt fail.

Got some beers and soda at the store, so it'll be okay. Gonna be working on it tonight and tomorrow, trying to get it running this weekend.

Not as much as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong, I loved it. It was pretty damn fun to drive.

Definitely coming out well on this deal.
$1200 for a 95 miata.
$100 for a spare engine for miscellaneous parts (brackets and timing covers)
$100 for racing seats
$250 for the roll bar I'm picking up from Ripley when he gets back from his trip
$150 for fluids and gaskets (shifter turret gaskets were $55...)
$175 for an ebay top.

Then of course spent money on soda, pizza, and beer.

They handle extremely well. Hell a stock 4 cyl passed me on the road course last week!

Well, it's officially rust free now.
Took all the areas with surface rust down to bare metal (most of it was actually the porous paint being dyed).
Primered all the parts I'd sanded, and put the carpet back in after I ripped out the insulation padding.

Still got some small things to put together in the engine bay, but the injectors, fuel rail, timing covers, pulleys, water neck and valve cover are all installed.
Got to get some new vacuum hoses and connect the electronics to finish it up.

I'm not sure, and I don't have the time/tools to test everything. I went ahead and replaced the cap and rotor since I had bought them a year ago, but that didn't fix the problem.

just replace the whole distributor. Anybody that's fooled with honda's long enough knows they suck. I had to replace the one in the prelude 2 or 3 times. It went completely dead once and started cutting the second time. my teggy once and my crx once.
Replace it with something with a decent warranty and you'll be fine.

A word to the wise- unless you want/need/gonna use the turbo power, just get a 2.5rs. The 2.0 turbos (all 02-05 wrx's) have horrible power below 2.5k for daily driving. they're somewhat lathargic. The non turbo 2.5 cars are great for everyday driving and come with the same AWD setup and lower maint costs.

Parents rented a new Camaro while my brother's car got fixed. This car was probably one of the biggest disappointments I've ever driven. I imagine the V8 would've been better, but still. Wow. It probably would've been better if it wasn't an automatic too. The tiptronic system SUCKS!! Plus everything in the car seemed out of place. There are so many blind spots in the car and the windshield is rather tiny for such a bulky car. After about 45mph it pretty much loses it's kick and dies down almost. It's kinda sad. Either way, this car's bark is definitely worse than it's bite. It was really upsetting. Oh well.

Meh, there are much better cars for the money IMO. I would pick up a used C6 before spending that much coin on a Camaro.

A word to the wise- unless you want/need/gonna use the turbo power, just get a 2.5rs. The 2.0 turbos (all 02-05 wrx's) have horrible power below 2.5k for daily driving. they're somewhat lathargic. The non turbo 2.5 cars are great for everyday driving and come with the same AWD setup and lower maint costs.

I never keep my wrx under 2.5k. Drive the damn thing.

trust me- i'm the same way but joe (the guy talking about possibly getting one) isn't a frequently spirited driver,therefore the torquey bottom end of the 2.5 would be more apealing to him and his driving habits and fuel economy.

I want a WRX but want an EVO more. I absolutely love the sound of a WRX with a cat-back.....damn orgasmic horizontally opposed motors.....let me stop now.

In other news....think my transmission is about to take a shit on me. Leaking like hell and now it's making a sound like an axle popping but can't see any visible damage to the axle.
