HELP!! 1999 eclipse gs

okay i have a problem i have a short throw shifter and when i am rolling to a stop sign and try to put it in first i cant or when i try to turn and throw it in 1st i cant i have to put it in second. but if i start off at a stop sign or a complete stop i can put it in 1st with no grinding. One more problem the rpm gauge doesnt work only when i punch the gas is when it works and it will work till i cut the car off. but when i cut it back on the rpm gauge does not work again till i punch the gas.

shifting problem...cars never like to be shifted into first while moving...that tendency is compounded by a short throw shifter...deal with it... :goodjob:

tranny problem synchros? But my car wont go into first at all unless im goin a certain low speed..unless i force it...ive got a SS also.

rpm's.. is your speed sensor electric or is it mechanical? i

I posted this in your other thread in Mitsubishi, but now I see you've posted it 3 different places. I know you think you'll get more of a response, but people don't really like to see the forums spammed like that. Just a heads up. :)


Did you put the short shifter in yourself? Did you buy the short shifter bushings and fluid to do with it? Adding those with the short shifter make a heck of a difference from what I've experienced.

Why are you making a turn in 1st anyways? You should really only ever be down shifting to first if your 5mph and under, and nearly coming to a full, complete stop. Down shifting to 1st gear when traveling at higher speeds is ridiculous and unnecessary, plus you're basically FORCING it into gear when you shouldn't be. When you had a longer shifter, you probably didn't notice it as much, but now with the shorter, you'll feel how difficult it is.

No I don't think there's anything wrong with the shifter, it's just how you're driving it. Just like mrhan44 and I said, you shouldn't be down shifting into 1st like that to begin with. It's not meant to be shifted like that, which is why you're finding it so difficult.

The RPM is just a digital problem with the gauge it sounds like.

definitaly the tranny. if your using your short throw shifter for its intended purpose which is shifting faster and more aggresively it wears out the stock synchros. if 1st is gone other gears will eventually start to follow. i would just swap in a used trans thats the cheapest option which isnt cheap but rebuilding is more expensive unless you know how to do it yourself. i had the same problem in my old car. at 1st it would grind in if i was moving a little then it just stopped going in and i had to start in 2nd. man does that suck.

I dont think there is anything wrong w/ your tranny. Like the others said, you dont shift into 1st gear while moving. I only shift mine into 1st when I'm at a complete stop, other than that the lowest I go is 2nd gear when I turn. Try that and see if it helps.

trust me its the tranny. what your describing is the synchros going bad. the next gear to go will be 3rd.

i'd also agree that your tranny is fine. my boyfriend's civic has a short throw shifter and you cannot shift into first unless the car is completely stopped. i would like to know why you are shifting into first in order to turn. you should be using second anyways.... maybe the car is trying to tell you something by letting you shift to second and stopping the shift to first.

omgwtfbbq. What are you trying to do grind and mess up your first gear. Dont ever put it in first when rolling, your going to f..k that gear up, then your going to pay a spit load to get it fixed. First is when your stopped, you can hit 2nd or 3 rd to downshift w/ out any problems.

i have brand new tranny and cant shift down to first unless im almost to a dead stop i can in second tho [;
