I really suck and know very little but learning quick and love good quality pictures. I also have a few teachers/friends but hate bugging them for advice all the time.

This is only a hobby for me but want to get something advanceable.

Here are a few that I took with a point and shoot a few weekends ago. I used a junky re sizer so the quality isn't all that great but may give ya an idea of what I like shooting.

well a D40 is a perfect place to start. you'll have an endless supply of lenses to choose from, and if you ever decide to take your hobby up to the next level, it will make a perfect 2nd body. I'd say go for it! You won't regret buying a Nikon!

Go the D40, i love my nikon

you'll have an endless supply of lenses to choose from

as long as they have built-in focusing motors, otherwise you'll have to manually focus since the D40 doesn't have an internal focus drive motor... Just make sure any lenses you get have built in focus motors and you'll be fine :goodjob:

I mean thats a great camera as well. But you need to be able to convince yourself why you need to spend the extra 400 bucks. A lot of people spend money on more advanced stuff when they don't really need it. If you can't tell someone why its worth more to you, then you honestly don't need it. You'd do better to get the d40 and then pick up a nicer used lens like the 18-200mmVR.

you could get the D40 outfit with the 2 lenses, and get a SB600 or SB800 Speedlight with that extra $400 you would have spent on the D80 with 1 lens.

Funny... I have a SD750, SD870 and a A590. I have to agree with him on the 750 and the 870 as well. I also like the 590 but all 3 are awesome IMO. The pictures above were taken with the 870 and the 590.

So far I have found a lot of options for the D40 but how does the auto focus work for the different lenses?

most of the lens will have an internal motor, i believe. there isn't too much stuff you will have to worry about, except older lens, which you prolly wouldn't be looking at anyway.
