I bought a new GTI and want to upgrade the stereo, it has 3-ways in the doors. I've been looking but all the sets I can find are $1000 and up, I'm not looking to spend that much. I know JL used to make some but they discontinued them and I can't find any on e-bay. Anyone know of any affordable sets that I could check out?

try to piece together a nice set most time its cheaper this way buying the raw drivers and crossover before the big company stamps them and ups the price

That's what someone else recommended, they told me to get a 4in component and add the driver. Would I need another cross-over?

just do a nice 2 way. do away with the 4 inch speaker and just do a 6 1/2 and a tweet.

I thought about that too but the mid-bass is in the back of the door so it would sound like crap. This thing has a 7" in the back of the door, a 4" up near the door handle and the tweeter. Rainbow has a set that's made for it but I can't justify the $1100.

Build kick panels for the mid bass and put the tweeter on the door.

You arent going to find many 3 way sets for under about 800. I believe the cheapest you are going to find is a set of CDT, if they even make them anymore.

A Hybrid Audio L631-3 set is around $780. (thats a L6, L3, and L1, which is essentially, a 7", 3" and tweet). These do NOT come with passive crossovers, so you will have to sort that out.

Several ways to go here...

Kick panels are good.
You can still get good sound with the midbass at the back of the door, but I would suggest a mid-range IF you can...
