Why the 20D? That model came out in 2004. What about the 450D?

I see. If you don't decide to go DSLR. There is suppose to be a new S series powershot coming out sometime this month or between now and august, it would be the S6 IS according to what's on the net....dunno if it will be that much cheaper than entry level DSLR though.

A digital single-lens reflex camera (digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_camera) that uses an automatic mirror system and pentaprism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentaprism) or pentamirror (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentamirror) to direct light from the lens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_lens) through the viewfinder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viewfinder) eyepiece.

The basic operation of a DSLR is as follows: for viewing purposes, the mirror reflects the light coming through the attached lens upwards at an approximately 90 degree angle. It is then reflected by the pentaprism to the photographer's eye. During exposure (when the photograph is taken), the mirror swings upward, and a shutter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_%28photography%29) opens, allowing the lens to project light onto the image sensor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor).

A 20d IS a DSLR :)

Yes you are correct some point and shoots do take really really good photos. I consider the Canon S3 IS, and S5 IS to be really good point and shots, also the Panasonic Lumix Z18

your horizons are slanted in the 1st and 4th. always remember to try to frame your subject as well as you can, changing it later is more work;)
