It's been a long, leak-filled wait, but Apple finally took the wraps off its 3G iPhone. Thinner edges, full plastic back, flush headphone jack, and the iPhone 2.0 firmware -- Apple's taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the first time around. Obviously 3G is at the forefront, but they're also making sure it's available all over internationally, works with enterprises, runs 3rd party apps... and does it all for cheaper. Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with pageloads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750 -- and of course it completely trounces the old EDGE data. Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers. WiFi data is also worked into the mix, which should give users a pretty solid lock on where the heck they are on this planet. Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year. 8GB is available for $199, 16GB for $299 -- and the 16GB comes in white. Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th.

:goodjob: GPS, 3G, cheap price... Win.

Not in the US, AT&T and Apple have an exclusivity deal. Its going on all kinds of different GSM networks worldwide though.

but someone was saying you have to upgrade another 2 year contract to get it at $199

osnap

Its still only offered with a contract, just like the first one was. It was never offered outright with no contract requirement.

i think you can buy it in the apple store with NO CONTRACT through AT&T. Meaning if you had Cingular already, you could purchase the phone an use it. Now , its only $199 but you have to extend your contract with AT&T 2 years

Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions. Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) and first generation iPhone (8GB) purchases. Requires new 2 year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

Well you're right, technically you could buy the phone by itself at the Apple store. You'll still be able to. Only, you have to activate the phone via iTunes, and when you do so, the contract is extended. They don't even activate them at AT&T, you do it yourself on your computer. Short of unlocking and jailbreaking, thats the only way to do it, and its practically useless until you do.

I'm glad I held out on buying the first iphone. Now it seems they have fixed all of the shortcomings. I think I'm going to try to get one when it comes out. My contract just ran up anyway.

I kinda feel like a douche now for selling my cracked 8GB 1st gen for $200 the other day... lol but worked out for me pretty damn well. Can't wait to get my black 16GB.

this is why we haven't got any more shipments of the 8/16gb iphones. I am just glad all my iphones sales are past the 15 days return policy

They will prolly redesign it after they new one sells start declining. The old was still selling well until we no longer had anymore in stock about 2 weeks ago

Sucks to work in a small store. We always kept ours in stock, selling a shitload per day

True, but I was expecting SOOO much more from Apple as far as designs go. They're very creative with that.

But like I mentioned in the other thread, Apple not making the first Iphone 3g was VERY smart of them, because that phone sold like hell. Making it 3g and making it the "new Iphone" and getting everyone hyped all over again is genius!

You guys are both ghey for working at at&t AND arguing about who's store is better on IA... Besides that. Is the 199$ just with the 2 year contract or is it with out it also? Or do you not know for sure yet?

1. stfu
2. go to a apple store if you want to buy a iphone and plan on going to a different gsm carrier
3. apple stuff usually never get discounted, so I believe its 199, b.c when you activate it through itunes it extends your contract or puts you in a new 2 year contract

if you're eligible for a upgrade, use your upgrade to get a different phone, then buy the iphone

Zeeb
06-09-2008, 07:37 PM
why? What would be the point in that? Just curious.

TIGERJC
06-09-2008, 08:03 PM
the point is the iphone will put you in a new 2 year contract, which means you will have to wait another 18 months before you're eligible for a upgrade. So if something happens to your iphone you're SOL until you're available for a upgrade

:goodjob: I tried to do this at the first iPhone launch, but the damn guy told me I couldn't... I don't think he understood what I was trying to do lol. I think one of my family plan lines is still eligible, so hopefully I'll pull it off this time around.

Interesting, looks like they're scrapping the at-home DIY activation model and requiring in-store purchase and activation this time around. lol TIGERJC and gtikid I'm sure this comes as annoying news to yall.

Fuc.k yea, no I am learning a lot of stuff the same time as you guys. But For the past month I knew when they were going to release the new iphone. Even gtikid knows that, I just have to look on my schedule and see what days I can't take off (lol) :lmfao:

I would love for in store activation, b/c that just means more feature add ons for me :D
