Ok, my XBOX is less than a month old, bought brand new, never had any issues with it until today. I finally bought GTA4, got home put the disc in, said I needed to update the console, so I did. Started loading the game, all goes well until 3/4 the way through the opening video. Game freezes up, makes a weird sound when it first freezes then stops. I restart the console, but when I was doing so I could feel the heat off of it easily 3 feet away, its NEVER gotten this hot, 5 hours straight of Rockband and it was barely warm, less then 3 minutes into this you could fry eggs on it. Once I restart it it does fine, until about 10 seconds into actually playing the game when it does it again. Restart it again, does the same thing about 10 seconds into playing, except this time the entire screen turns blue when it freezes. I go to restart again and get the red ring of death . Well I put in Forza 2, it plays fine, do several races, after about an hour it freezes. Restart and it works great again for about an hour before it freezes and does the blue screen for a split second before going back to the racing screen. I must note now that the console is NOT warm at this point, neither disc is scratched, and everything appears to be in normal working order until it freezes. I've been reading around and cant find anything about this particular issue with the blue screen, and the console getting unusually hot. I unplugged it, and set it on my bed and havent touched it since. Anyone have any ideas on what could cause this?

Sorry for the novel guys, +Reps to anyone with any help. Thanks!

That's a problem with the game from what I know. I only read until you said it freezes, but I work at Gamestop and had a few people come in with it, including myself.

I thought the same thing, until my Forza 2 froze on my twice back to back. I'm hoping its just the game.

Try the games on another system and if they don't freeze it's probably your system. My GTA4 only froze every so often. Either way, good luck.

my GTA4 freezes about every 3 hours and my xbox is the "2nd gen" the first one after they fixed the overheating problem. (which i bought the rear intercooler for it and i have never had a lick of a problem with it except an occasional freeze)

a friend of mine had this same problem but his screen turned yellow.....

can you describe the weird sound? sound like a cd being skipped in a cd player? or a grinding gear sound?

Kind of a loud version of a CD skipping. Hard to explain quite honestly. I was really almost positive it was the GTA4 disc, but how hot it got in literally less than 5 minutes worried me. As well as my Forza disc skipping.

i know the same noise your talking about. i hear it on mine every once in awhile.

what kind of an area is your xbox in? you know that those things require a good bit of airflow to work right.

mine was inside an entertainment shelf with a closed back and sides and a shelf right above it and i could feel the heat on the top side of the shelf.

so i took some skateboard wheels to lift it a good inch off the ground and brought that shelf up 3 holes and the heat problem has been long gone.

try to find a little portable house fan and keep it blowing on your xbox.

get as much airflow as possible going in and around your setup.

know as far as your RROD (red ring of death) thats usually caused by a power shortage. the only time ive ever seen that is when either, (A) my power goes out at my house, or (B) theres voltage going to your system but not enough. for example, i was going on a trip with my family in our travel van, and plugged my xbox up to a low voltage converter from a car outlet and it had just enough volatge to to power it up for a second and then give me the ring.

as far as the skipping... theres no fact to this but is always works for me.

every 2 hours or so go back to the dashboard and eject the disc tray, remove the disc and get some of that CO2 computer parts "dust off" spray and spray it inside the xbox form the tray.

just make sure its good and cold when you spray it and wait a sec for it to turn into a mist instead of the liquid.

in a nutshell, most SKIPPING IS CAUSED BY OVERHEATING. so if you fix one, then you fix the other....

i hope you can find some of this usefull.

Its sitting on a shelf thats like 6" off the floor in my room, nothing above it or to either side. I'm taking the game back today and exchanging it, hopefully it will fix my problems. Thanks guys!

with the "certain" games freezing, if you are installing the games, ive read many places that there is an issue with the installers and sometimes its corrupt so you should delete theinstall and try a reinstall. until it works lol. sucks but yeah thats what some are sayin

They offer a intercooler for it. You might want to try that.

One thing you might want to try to do is take your hard drive out of the Xbox and play the game. If it still has the same issue than its obviously the disc, if it works fine than there might be something wrong witht he console. Good luck!

Return game... GTA4 has been having issues like that on the 60gb PS3's also and it's an error on the install file of the game. But the PS3 had a downloaded patch to fix it, 360 you have to return the game.

also I recommend swapping for a PS3 :goodjob:

I agree. Xbox 360 has so many problems. I have both PS3 and Xbox 360 btw. I have to fix my friend's console every couple weeks due to overheating. No matter what you do, add intercooler, put it in good ventilation area, ...it won't stop it from having problems. It is just a matter of time. His just had 3 rrod again while playing Ninja Gaiden 2. That game really works up the console. I put mine into a micro atx case and upgrade both cpu and gpu heat sink, add more fans to cool (function over form, I don't care if it is big rather than having a small nice looking console and don't even work). It works really good since! No matter how long I played, or what game I played (Cod4, orange box, bioshock,...), cpu and gpu won't get past 47 C degree. Eventually I will change my set up into liquid cool.

Well, my XBOX officially died yesterday, was playing Forza 2, all of a sudden screen went completely blue, went to restart it, wouldnt load the whole menu, everytime you restart it it freezes earlier and earlier, then boom RROD started, happens every time now. Console hadnt even been on 10 minutes when it started. Guess it'll be on its way back to microsoft :(.

It will come, just a matter of time! Unless you have a new board with falcon 65nm chip which is less prone to 3RROD.
