Okay so i have reduced my choices to an Evo 8 or 9, Skyline, Rx-7 or a civic.
Anyother suggestions are welcome.
Which one of those do you think I should buy? or can you suggest anyothers?

Civic, definitely!!! Best car in the world, why do you think there are so many?

Really a Civic over a skyline or an Evo....

You don't necessarily have to buy Japanese. For way less than 30k you could get a Volvo s60R, or a BMW 3 Series. Since you are looking used, you might want to consider these.

Wow. You're comparing apples to oranges. There is more than one BRAND NEW Porsche available for under 50K.

I just think that this is an asinine statement:

But no one can make cars turn like the Japanese...

You should come back with a real budget and do some research.

Ok, I am not going to bash you, but...

The EVO 8 and 9 are both AWD and as a result, they naturally oversteer unless they have had a lot of work. The Civic should not be mentioned with the EVo's or the RX7 because if built, FWD will torque steer (not great for handling). Personally, I have no problem with the RX-7 other than it is down on torque a bit, but all things considered, a very good motor.

As for your comment on Porsche, pretty much every carb porsche (Pre-'76) will drive circles around any of the cars you are considering in the handling department. As for the Japanses cars turn better statement, do remeber that the early japanese suspension designs were actually british. Colin Chapman of Lotus, to be precise.

If you are looking at handling, look at older cars. The lighter the better. Maybe a Datsun 510 (hey, it is japanese), or a 240Z. European cars could be a BMW 320i or an Audi. If you actually have near 50k, look at a used 911. You will not do better in the handling department.

Yes. Legal crap.

They are DOT ILLEGAL unless you have one of the "Motorex" cars. They are illegal on the federal level as they are not on the approved import list.

You get one shipped over, good luck getting it titled and then insured.

lol at civic being on the list! Well all you've done is put a few cars on a list... You didn't state what you wanted out of the car like, horsepower, torque, handling....etc. Make the list more specific next time. I would get a '04 WRX Sti.

Now maybe if you had approached the question in a more serious manner people whould show a little "respect", but because you came out with an open thread that was useless in return we must bash it, but in reality we are only trying to help this thread to render usefull... just the jokes on you.. Im mean really i cant believe how many People ask this question and theres no problom but ... you killed it. We dont even know what the car is going to be used for wait YOU dont even know what your going to use it for Autox, drag, a weekend warrior? But because you arnt seriously serious! Any drivers/tuners in NC in Durham/Raleigh

I'm sure there are people that drive in Durham/Raleigh NC... They're not a third world country... But the majority of us on importATLANTA (as in the state of Georgia), live a little closer... so we're really not going to know...

xthakila

When I say drivers I mean someone who knows how to work with cars.
Okay then if you want it to be on a more serious and specific note since the open ended question did not really work.
I will pose a more specific one.
I am looking for a car that I can tune upto at least 700WHP.
I will use it for drags.
I will also use if for drifting to a small extent(only for fun to start with.)
Maybe autox want to leave that option open.
Is that descriptive enough?
or is this comment useless as well.

Motivation
06-02-2008, 01:48 PM
1) none of them were questions
2) that was not specific at all
3) you want to try to begin drifting in a 700 whp car? you have fun with that
4) You can't really just tune up a car to 700whp... little more involved that that
5) you want a car to drag and autox and drift? have fun with that setup
6) you are new to actually driving cars, and you want to do all this? quit watching so much t.v.
7) go get a cavalier and try drifting on top of a parking deck
8) goodbye

xthakila
06-02-2008, 01:55 PM
I am not new to driving cars....
I know I will have to install mods in the car to get it up to 700 WHP.
No I don't want to do all that hence I said that I will only drift for fun maybe not at all.
I actually do not watch TV at all.
and yes i fail i admit goodbye. Thanks for all your help guys.

Not to start another topic, but how do you figure? Do you mean under steer? Most AWD guy's myself included battle under steer on our cars more so than over steer. AWD cars are more neutral in there handling and even dive a bit like a FWD car until pushed to there limit. The exception being the STi and new Evo X which you can control the amount of torque sent to the rear wheels, thus allowing the cars rear to rotate. The stock WRX's and Evo's will under steer all day long unless you chuck it into a turn hard enough to get a four wheel drift, at which point you can get the nose to tuck in with some trail breaking. Just from my experience. I'm sure other AWD cars have different handling dynamics, but generally under steer is the unwanted gremlin.

Any car can be made to handle, a Civic can EASILY out handle a EVO and walk on it in the mountains with NO power. I agree about having a Civic on that list you sound like a 14 year old boy planning his first car.
