Calling all old skool RWD Japanese streetfighters. I.E. All AE86 corollas and older, all supras, third gen and down. All RWD celicas,Rwd cressidas and maximas, coronas, Datsuns, 510, 610, 710, 210, 810, 200sx, all z cars 1989 down, Any Datsun roadsters out there? Starions/conquests 1989 down. Rx's? Rx2, 3,4,cosmo. 7I, and 7II You guys get my drift. Is there any love out there for these cars? Lets come up with a day a time and place to do a cruise in.
12 Ae86's just got together at a sonic one thursday night. Surely, there are at least 10 to 15 old skool Jap cars that could ride out one night. Show a little respect for the cars that started all of this "Import Stuff"
Give some ideas and opinions, When, Where, What, What part of town are you in? What kind of car?

I'm from Auburn/Lawrenceville, We would be riding in a 77 celica GT, 5 speed 1983 Maxima, A Datsun 710 maybe a 510, a couple of 1st gen Rx 7's. I'd like to see, first, a cruise in meet like at a Sonic or something similar, and if the interest is there maybe a group ride to Stone mtn, buford dam, or Helen Etc. It would be cool to see and hear a bunch of loud-azz old skool bumble bees ride up Neal's Gap or Blood Mtn.
Let me hear from you!

The Dates. June, 12, 8:00 pm sonic ob sattellite blvd at Gwinnett place mall. Just a cruise in Then SATURDAY, JUNE, 14, at Buford Dam the lower pool park, (the river side, not lake side) at 3:00 pm till close followed by a ride out to BP on Pleasant Hill Rd.

Directions from I-85: Go to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd, go west, (towards Buford Hwy) L'ville-Suwanee will turn into Suwanee Dam. Stay on Suwanee dam Rd until it dead ends into Buford Dam Rd. Turn Left, drive out on to the dam. At the spillway turn Left on to the dirt road going to the bottom of the dam. If you don't want to get on to the dirt road, alternative paved parking is available to the left, before the spillway. This parking lot is connected by a walking trail, to where the meet will be. If your coming to spectate this would be a good parking lot to park in, because I'm afraid space is going to be limited in the lower area, due to the number of cars already comitted to the meet. Thanks, and hope to see you at the Dam Old Skool Meet.

too bad nobody has any soarers or chasers around here :(

Sheesh, the "normal" early Japanese cars are rare enough these days, But yeah, some soarers or chasers, or early skylines and other Rare JDM cars would be cool. Maybe there are some out here in Atlanta

I think anyone should be welcome to come out and check out the cars. However, DrAE86 you could be in a hachi, by the time we hammer down a time and place to meet. I'm thinking early to mid june, like two or three weeks out. I'm trying to get my ae86 done by this thursday to meet up with the 86 guys at atlantic station. I might check and see what they would think about maybe once a month being open to all old schools.

hehe the problem with me is that im all about the right platform..and basically im only looking right now for something that was as clean...or cleaner than my old 86...so im a bit picky about it..lol..if i find that before the next meet then awsome!

What's the difference between an '89 240 and a '91 240?? They look the same but the '91 is not welcome?

Hail. An 89 shouldn't be welcome. At the OG Japanese meet we're working on, we're stopping the year at around 82-83. Later, QD.

Well, like I said give me some input and lets work out the details. I really consider the AE86 as the first of the new school cars or last of the old school cars. I really feel around 1986 was the last year of old school cars because most auto manufacturers had finally switched to fuel injection and a more modern or luxurious interiors.
Some cars such as the AE 86, Mitsubishi starion, the NissanZX series, and 200Sx were started in the early eighties. So I feel we can't just put a year model as the cut off. I feel the 240 sx is a modern era car even a 1989.
I also feel like an old skool is a car where ingenuity is as important as having money. Let me explain...A person can buy pretty much any honda or 240sx and as long as they can bolt on the "pre-engineered" parts they bought off of E-bay or a magazine they can build a fast car with a minimal amount of effort. Take an old skool car like a "75 Datsun 710 or a '74 Toyota corona Mark II, for example, there are no new body panels available, no "easy" bolt in engine upgrades. If your old skool you know it, because you and your old skool friends scratched your heads and figured out by trial and error how to bring this cool azz car back to life and out on to the streets to kick some new cookie cutter style car's a**.
Why RWD only? If you got something cool and fwd? Enlighten me. No dumbass 1984 crx is going to sway me to let in front drive cars. You got like a 1979 Datsun F-10? 1976 honda cvcc civic with a tail gate and 4 mikuni motorcycle carbs on it? Probably tell you to bring your badazz OG Fwd
Keep it up and let's come up with some cars and a place
Thanks for the input!

Alright, I see a possible 280zx, a couple of Fc's, and some old school civics from this site. I'll be bringing with my group a 74 datsun 710, 83 rwd maxima, 84 rx7 gsl se, 83 rx7, maybe a couple of corolla GTS's, 82 corolla 1.8, 72 rx2, and maybe a couple more cars that are being finished up by some friends.
I'll prolly ride out to the V, but it's to tough to try to pull together a bunch of cars there.
I think andretti's is a good place, suwanee has a decent park with some restaurants and plenty of parking.
Us old skoolers need to link up, cuz ,it's not like parts for most of these cars are at autozone. Maybe I got some parts for your 510 or maybe you got some interior parts for my 74 Corona Mark II, Maybe Bob's got a hook up with some OG JDM wheels. It takes a bunch of cooperative people to keep the OG cars on the road.
what about thursday June 12? It can be later, I have several friends with some work in progress on ther cars. Check in, about what car, when, and where!

05-27-2008, 12:04 AM
hey QD, I'v been building 510's, roadsters, zcars, corollas etc since i was 16, and that was 1986. Now it's 2008 and I build them for me and for customers. I'm sure some one has determined what is a "factual" old skool car. I just say it's a matter of semantics, and seems to be turning into a waste of time. At our shop we don't have a book to go by for most of the repairs and fabrication on these old japanese cars. I can't just go buy a turbo kit for an L-20b or a tubular crossmember for a corona so I can run a more modern power plant. It's an old school way of building things, It's an old school way of having a network of people that are into these kind of cars. A network of people, that are friends, and the common goal is to see OG sh*t on the streets. Cool?
Now, on to Whtdc2. Awesome. I'm looking at maybe June 12 at? what part of town are you in? Most of my group will be riding in from around Gwinnett. I bet a Ka 510 pulls hard. Torque.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. According to your statement/philosophy, if I'm arguing about what is old school, I probably don't have one. I invited you to check out a few members that were "arguing." I happen to own a 79 CVCC that I daily drive right now.

I'd love for a meet like this to happen. But if it's on a week night, then I'll probably hold off until a weekend one can be put together. Daylight hours is prime time to check these cars out. Later, QD.

Yeah, i really want to see this all come to life too. My first car was kindof a true old schooler, but i couldnt find the parts for it so i ended up swapping it out for something a little newer..... i went from a carbureted '87/88 corolla to a '90 integra.

I do think that the 'RWD' part of it all is a bit much though.... I'll just agree with this guy:

you idiots make everything to fcuking complicated to be a actual "car meet", just show the fcuk up with a JDM older car and be fcuking happy.

The title of the thread i think should be changed to "Classic JDM Car Meet" that cant be argued, it sets a boundary of 1983. If your eligable for a classic car plate you can come, i dont think the guy who started this thead was looking for a big turnout, it would just be cool to see a meet with 70's and early 80's z's, supras, rx7's, celicas, and such.

teh_mugen18

Yup dave, is a cool guy to know, has some really nice cars, and is right when he said that it takes a bounch of people to keep this cars running and on the streets, if it wasent for forums and other people like dave some of the parts for thees cars would be almost impossible to get, you wont know how hard or expensive they are to get untill you own one of thees cars, that is why old skool cars get so much attention and respect, because of all the hard work and patience the person that has the car put into it. Because just changing the oil, or a tune up is not enough to keep this cars on the road. So dave/jhon you know some of the rotary's will repressent at the meet even tho we dont meet the age requirements yet, the rx7 has its fair share of reputation as a jap. car.

Puregroove be kickin a triple OG corolla. sweet. Rarely, see TE rollas anymore. I got a CLEAN front grille for one if yours is damaged. We had a nice brown 4 door but it got t-boned HARD. So we pulled the nice parts off, just in case....RIP to tha big pull-a-part in the sky.
GT4rcdude I'll probaly get roasted for this, but you got an awesome, rare, "historically" significant toyota. I'd be sad if you didn't show up with your car.
Silver 280zx I don't know what this thread should be called, but most of our cars are USDM. I know matter of semantics. You are correct about the "rice" thing I guess I'm just trying to "detuner" this gathering. read "anti-rice" Although, anyone that wants to come by and check out the cars is welcome. I think this is the only way we can generate interest in these cars, and try to attract more people to try to save these cars from being scrapped, and sent to china. I don't know how big this thing is going to turn out, but if anyone comes to spectate, please be cool and let us try to park all of the cars together for some photos. This could turn out to be a really cool event.
Thanks Chava, I already had you on the original list. I knew you'd want to be reppin' that OG sidedraft mikuni on your 5 letter 13 b. Hey, did you see that chic lookin at your wankle?
Now on to business, I'm kinda with quickdodge about a daytime meet, for viewing purposes, and for reliability purposes. Most OG cars, it seems, are always in a project state. We'll be bringing out like 4 to 6 cars most of which are projects not even started, just running nearly stock cars.(with their share of problems) I think maybe we should have a cruise in at the sonic where the AE86's meet thursday June 12. It's on Sattelite blvd near Gwinnett Mall around 7:30 or 8:00 to whenever. Or, Saturday at the bottom of Buford dam at the river from like 3:00 to 8:00. It's usually about 10 to 15 degrees cooler below the dam than anywhere in atlanta. Plus if you haven't been there, It's a pretty cool place. Or, we can push it back to end of June. Let me Know. Post some pics of what you'll be driving. I'll do the same.

SRL is the U20 model, but mine isn't the solex equipped 2000.
SPL is the R16 model.
I might try to make it, but can't make any guarantees. If I did, it would be in the supra though.:ninja:

u-20 powered roadsters are really quick and can be a handfull in the twisties. I had one in 1988, and it would smoke all of the 1st gen integras, and any stock 5.0 fox body "stang". I have an extra set of u-20 SU carbs, and I have a friend that will probably be selling a pair of 50mm PHH mikuni carbs. Mikuni bought out solex and designed the PHH around it. They actually use the same accelerator pump.
Hopefully we'll be able to meet up sometime, if not at the upcoming meet, then later

no idea about the dime right now... I got a L20b sitting at my friend's house I can have for free but it's been sitting a long time. Depends on the money situation. I wouldn't mind just doing a KA but of course i've always wanted to do SR20DET swap.

i might be getting a 1600 roadie.

How's the rust on that 240z and does it run?

i'll def make it out, in the maxima if i have to but i'm a classic owner so no hate lol

As far as engines for your Dat, We got some solutions, appx. 250 hp, 350 ft/lbs torque, installed and megasquirted for $2000,00. Includes, engine, megasquirt, squirt harness, transmission, motor mounts, initial tuning (not dyno tuned) and all labor. Daily driver reliable. I Rode out to Buford Dam today. I looked at the dam park, and the dam road. It all looked dam nice if you ask me. The road to the lower pool is dirt and is surprisingly smooth on the ay down. The only rough spots are in the turns, they have some washboarding going on. No potholes or large rocks in the road. Even the lowest of vehicles could make it. I saw a couple of crotchrocket at the bottom. This location is free and has plenty of grass to grill, throw a football, frisbee, or play a little soccer. If you come I would bring a blanket or some fold up chairs. The park has benches and limited picnic tables. If a dirt road is out of the question with most people, then West Bank is available, but is $4.00 per car. Both parks are a within 1/2 mile of each other and both parks are open until 10:00 PM. It should be a dam good time.

My friends and myself are going regardless if any one commits or not. That's like 6 cars and maybe 12 people, and probably at least one of us will "rally" off the dam dirt road. Sounds like a dam fun Saturday afternoon at the lower dam park. Even if no "Import Atlantians" come out. So to answer your question..."But I wonder if this will be worth the drive?"...I guess you'll just have to drive out and see!
My group will prolly ride up to Gwinnett BP at the spot after we leave the dam car meet, and hang until late. any one else is welcome to ride along. It's about 10 miles away. C-Ya

Here are the directions from I-85. Get off on the Lawrenceville-suwanee Rd. exit, head west towards Buford Hwy/p'tree Industrial, stay on L'ville-Suwanee Rd. untill it dead ends into Buford Dam Rd. Take a left. Drive onto the dam, and once you get to the spillway (with the big digital lake level meter) look to the left for the road to access the Lower Pool park. Go to the bottom of the dam.
from hwy 400 I know to take Hwy 20 to the east, but I'm not sure where to turn to access the dam from the westbank. I do know that hwy 20 will cross Suwanee dam rd. At Suwanee dam take a left and follow it until the rd dead ends into Buford dam rd.
3:00 to close. 10:00pm. Saturday, June 14 Buford Dam.
as of tonight I have twenty confirmed non "Import Atlantians" counting me, and 6 probablies.

Is this the Thomas with the shop in Norcross? --used to have a rotary te31/72?

Big_Dave
06-04-2008, 01:16 AM
No, it's Thomas, our new shop Padwan. This was his first engine swap, he's only 19, and he pulled it off in like three days. He had to modify the oil sump because he changed from the maxima motor to a carbed Z motor. One motor is front sump and the other is a rear sump. He had to make a custom oil pick up tube and he painted the engine bay correctly. I gotta give some props to Thomas. He'll be at the dam meet in his OG Max.

Silver280zx

Was the maxima a rear sump? Because mine is a front sump, and i looked at the codes on that motor and its the same as mine. Did yall do a dry sump?

Big_Dave
06-04-2008, 01:24 AM
Eddie, I got a purple 71 celica from the Thomas your talking about. I sold it to a friend about 2 months ago. Thomas said he would be coming out on saturday, but he doesn't have any thing OG to drive right now. He siad he would come in his '85 toyota pick-up. He said it's old and RWD. Lol.

Was the maxima a rear sump? Because mine is a front sump, and i looked at the codes on that motor and its the same as mine. Did yall do a dry sump?Your motor is a front sump??? Yeah, his maxima is a front sump and the '76 z motor is a rear sump. Either motor uses the same oil pick-up tube, but the block has a different casting and location for the pick-up and the dipstick. If what your saying is correct then when I do the 280zx Turbo conversion to my RWD maxima, It might be a close to bolt in affair.
To answer the other question, I left before he had everything buttoned up on it. So I don't think he's driven it yet. I talked to him a while ago and he was still finishing up some wiring issues. He's happier than a pig in stank. It sounds mean.

Silver280zx
06-04-2008, 02:20 AM
haha, you were right about that sump once i think about it, i was picturing that 4ac motor. Thats wierd that that maxima is a front sump. I cant wait to get that head, i am getting new seats cut so i can put 280 valves in it.

Big_Dave
06-04-2008, 02:25 AM
The 280zx valves should be a pretty good bit bigger. Also I see why you are wanting to use a maxima head. I was looking at one in the scrap pile at work, and it's a close-chambered head. This combo should be pretty high compression. jus a lil r&d. Cool.

Silver280zx
06-04-2008, 02:30 AM
Well the maxima head is pretty good, because of the peanut shaped 38cc size, but the biggest restriction with the head is the vlave size and the steel sleeves in the runners. With and high compression z motor, your going to have to manipulate the heads no matter which head you decide to use, and i just happen to decide on this one, plus it will put my motor at 11.5:1 compression.

It's pretty nice at the low side of the dam. I chose this spot because it is usually 15 degrees cooler than at the top of the dam, and the sun drops behind the cliff pretty early. That looks like a nice solid corolla that you have and the price is fair. Is it 5-speed or automatic?

A good place to potentially meet up is Shorty Howell Park over off exit 104 near Gwinnett Place Nissan. Good bit of parking there and as long as it isn't rented out for a party there are grills.

Great turnout for the meetespecially considering the weather. bythe time we left at 8:30 43 old skool cars came by. Rx x 3--Daaayuum--awesome car if you got to see this car in person you were lucky. This car was built over ten years ago, and hasn't been out on the streets in years. Roland, I'm glad ya'll woke this sleeping beauty up. The color is right!
Morgan racing, building bada$$ Old skool Toyotas since they were new! That sr5 peanut Corollla, factory flares, no rust, a built 3tc, and about to get painted. What a rare car. I drove mine from Sacramento to Indianapolis - other than the heat in the western states, it drove like a dream. I drove it around Indianapolis for a few weeks and then it was a apart w/ plans for the sr20 - then I blew up my EF, then bought a 91 Notch (stang), then a 1st gen Civic ---- and it fell behind. But this old school resurgence has me hungry to get it back together. I plan to bring it out at the next old school meet. :) For a long time I thought me and BTLFED were the only 2 510 (2 doors) in ATL.... in the last month I realized this was far from the truth.

Right now QD and Stormhammer are talking about the next meet having Brit-ish cars and all old skool imports at the next meet.
Here is my reply. The Brit-ish cars have two or three shows a year around hearm there are all vw and german only shows. I think we should keep the Jap only motif.
If the weather had of been good and some poeple had there cars on the road and not apart we could have almost ran out of parking, I counted 43 O/S Jap cars and this was the first one. 43 cars is an awesome turnout for ths genre of cars. I also know of 19 cars that did not come because they thought the weather as going to be too bad. Keep it Jap only.

I understand what y'all are talking about, but unless someone fronts money to reserve a place to park cars in sections, or hold at least 200 cars for free. The turnout would probably be100 to 150 cars and probably a nearly equal # of spectators. More cars than even the lower dam park could hold without reserving the whole park. If that can even be done. 43 cars plus all of the non-O/S cars that showed just to spectate was close to 100 cars I'm sure. If we do an all inclusive show, where do you guys suggest?

I've seen this car run at Lagrange last year when they had an Imports vs domestics grudge match. It's a pretty nice car. It hooks hard and runs straight. I think he blew his motor. he was running mid 6's in the 1/8th mile when I saw him. Price looks to be fair.

Heh heh! I know you got the cash to snatch up some OG ride! Get you a shoebox corolla and mess with it until the right 510 comes along. I got a line on a quad light shoebox wagon. and there was a nice quadlight 4 door for sale here in the classifieds. Get something just to kick around in!

Next meet's coming in August. I'll post a new thread in a few days.

P.S. I have a decent running Datsun 710 with factory A/C that works. I could sell it if your interested. Any engine combo that would go into a 510 would be the same for this car. It just has a solid axle instead of the independent rear.

Whats up Roland? Like Stormhammer said Ft. Yargo in winder, with a possible meet-up/caravan from Yearone in Braselton to Ft. Yargo. Is the Rx 3 coming out again?!!! Reps for the nicest Rx3 in Georgia!
Ft Yargo has grills, The road is not dirt! Plenty of parking, but It's like three dollars for a parking fee. We are going to bring some food and cook out. We are going to start around 3:00 at Ft Yargo and any one that wants to ride in from breselton/Year one..should arrive at year one Between 1:30 and 2:00.

The date will be Saturday August 16th, or Saturday August 23rd. I'm just holding on the date for any one with vacation issues to check in.

Stormhammer
06-30-2008, 03:48 PM
Dave - what about maybe starting out the meet at YearOne for maybe an hour or two and then rolling out to Fort Yargo more around dinner/cookout time?

I'll see if I can swing by there this upcoming Bash and talk to the manager and see if maybe they can give us a tour ( they're very gracious as a business place ). It'd also give the chance of people possibly wanting to buy some things and or memorabilia ( I know, old school imports, but some things can be applied to our cars :D )

Big_Dave

Stormhammer, I say we throw this meet up/caravan to the thread and see if any one wants to take part. (Riding from Breselton, year one, to Ft. Yargo) Also I've already had some negative replies by phone about going to a location that is pay to park like Ft. Yargo. I know it's not possible for every one to agree on something, but I say we keep it as simple as possible.

1. Another Dam Old Skool meet for free and we just use the upper overlook parking lot (no dirt road)

2. pay $4.00 a car to go to West Bank on the dam

3. pay $4.00 a car to go to Ft.Yargo in Winder

4. Any suggestions? criteria for the meet location? should be able to park 40 to 50 cars together, and have room for appx 50 more cars spectating.. FOR FREE AND PAVED.

4. Any suggestions? criteria for the meet location? should be able to park 40 to 50 cars together, and have room for appx 50 more cars spectating.. FOR FREE AND PAVED.

Fort Yargo I think is cheaper than that, like $2. It's not a pay to park, its just a pay to get in and from there you can do whatever you want. If someone is too broke ass to hand over two washingtons or what have you... then damn son!

I would call ahead to Ft. Yargo and reserve a picnic area if it were the case ( they have various sized ones with parking areas, last time I went I reserved a spot and had about 30 classic Chargers all parked etc )

As for #4. That'd be Year One :lmfao:

Yes, I'll post a new thread on saturday. I was just giving all of us some time to work out the "when and where", before posting a new thread. I wanted to make sure as many people can attend as possible, and make any plan changes now, before starting the new thread.

You driving the honda or the datsun this time?

A Datsun Shag 10. I'm a wagon fan! I like the body, and the solid rear axle. Is it from around Atlanta?

Also a quick note.

Old School is pretty much based on the age of the person looking at it. I am in my late 30s, so i'm with QD. Old School is 70's.

It can also be 80's by the definition of the end of an era. Inexpensive RWD cars and the end of Carbs. Was my 86 Old School? To me, maybe not. But to a 20 year old, sure it is. Because he wasn't even born with it came out. So of course it's Old School cause his parents drove one maybe.

But I also agree with this statement. Everyone makes getting together SO damm hard. Can I bring this? Is this considered this? Why can't I bring this?......Just show up. If someone doesn't like your car, **** em. Customizing cars is all about YOU. Not the 50 swinging ****s standing around. Some will like it, some will not. I can understand respecting the type of meet you are at. But everyone is there to have fun, not nitpick what is Old School or not Old School.

Look at the cars, the girls asses and have fun. Thats what is is all about.

hey bro I may be getting some SSR casablancas for the wagon (i have always LOVED casablancas) and nobody has them.

I am picking it up tomorrow unless this old lady buys it for her son today.. was talking to owner said she was first in line but he doesn't want to sell it to her cause it's to be her son's first car and he doesn't know **** about Datsuns.

But i LOVE casablancas.

Haha. Wanna hear a funny story.

I heard about a Z car down south of Atlanta. A RHD 280ZX. I went down there to buy it. 300 bucks. Got there, it had a set of 15x8 Umpuls on it. Hardly any curbing. Bought the car from what looked like Kid Rock on crack in the parking lot of an old folks home. Drove it home with a stuck throttle and on 5 cylinders since a rat chewed through the #5 injector wire. Found 40lbs of pipefitting stuff in it and some portable drug scales.

Fun car, specially going through drive throughs in reverse. :)
