2009 Ferrari California, Revealed!

New Ferrari California revealed: a hugely versatile, innovation-packed GT

Maranello, May 13th 2008 - The first official photographs have been published of the Ferrari California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and added to more recently with the 430 Scuderia.

The Ferrari California joins the Prancing Horse's 8-cylinder family which has always been defined by power and performance. It also flanks the flagship 612 Scaglietti in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment.

The new Ferrari California will satisfy even the most demanding of owners in term of its superb vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure. The new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminium, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque's history in the mid-front position.

In line with Ferrari tradition, the new model also features several innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+ concept which guarantees exceptional versatility of use in the rear of the car. The California's 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft. It generates 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure which is typical for Ferrari.

As per the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout, the engine, which allows the Ferrari California to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds, will be coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that boosts the car's performance while enhancing the driving pleasure, improves ride comfort and reduces fuel consumption and emissions (c.310 g/km CO2). The comfort is further enhanced by a new multilink rear suspension system. The Ferrari California is also equipped with the exclusive F1-Trac traction control system which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano and has been further honed to suit the typical driving conditions expected for this new GT. Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic material disks as standard guarantee superbly efficient braking.

In addition to sporting the marque's classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari's own skilled artisans. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, together with optimised aerodynamics ensure that this is a highly ergonomic and enjoyable car to drive regardless of whether the top is up or down.

The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever. The car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Paris International Car Show. However, over the coming weeks, new photographs and further details about it will also be published.

im not gonna go to say they copied it, prolly took inspiration from it. Lexus started a trend if anything.

Personal opinion this, but i say it looks way better on the California than the IS-F, i say that because the Is-f isn't as ascetically pleasing as the Ferrari and those tips just flow better with the car. The Is-f has them screaming "look at me"

wow, imo that is an absolutely gorgeous little roadster. I love it.

Bah.. I fail to see any real Ferrari design language in this. The rear looks like an extended version of the Solstice, the front is a mish-mash of cues from many current cars - G37, Genesis, MR2 etc. while the entire front end looks to a cousin of the Maserati GranTurismo. Those tail lights seem to be lifted straight from the 8C.
Sorry, but this does not evoke any sense of passion. But who cares? All the nouveau riche who can't afford a 612/430S will be lining up to the first to drive this car.

I was at the Ferrari dealer last night, looking at the different models. (dont ask ;))

This new Ferrari will probably adopt the F149 name plate and will look just fine amongst its stable mates.

You see alot of people have been calling it the "entry level or affordable" model but its looking to be priced more than the F430.

Well for starters, this car better resembles the flagship 599 and is a front-mid engined layout. It will also have a retractable hardtop, direct injection V8 and a DSG transmission.

Where in that last sentence did "entry level" or "affordable" pop up?

Again, quality car comes with a quality price. I approve.

Oh, thank you, your royal gayness .. I mean highness. Nobody would have bought this heap of Maranello junk without your seal of approval. :gay:
So when are you taking us for a ride in your new Ferrari? :D

Nowhere did i write that i was buying the car. I simply put that i felt the price made sense. If you think different, I'd gladly ride shotgun in your $100,000+ dollar car and let you show me what makes it better. Otherwise, prove your point with facts and examples.

"Heap of Marenello junk", Seeing to how i know what goes into making that car, I'll have to disagree. Understand that i am not a fanboy but i do know what quality is and it comes at a price.

If you don't like the car or the brand, guess what, you don't have to buy it.
Ferrari's aren't a necessity so i'm pretty sure the people lined up for it aren't making a life threatening decision. No one in this world needs my approval to buy that car. I was referring to the people that questioned it's value as a Ferrari, (something you denounced by calling it a car from Maranello).

And guess what else. Calling me out with off-topic derogatory comments makes you look like the fool.

This forum is for discussion. If you agree or disagree, make your point.

Wow wow wow.. some people just don't have a sense of humor, I see. Anyhow, thanks for the lecture man.. I was getting bored reading nondescript information in other threads.
And if Ferrari is NOT a car from Maranello, pray tell me where is it from? It's definitely not made in the U.S. or Mexico as you might assume.

Well at one point Modena was in the picture but that's irrelevant for what we are going on about.

Anyways. I have a sense of humor, i just feel that allot of times, people jump to conclusions and i like to set the facts straight. Especially if it has to do with what i said.

No problem.. guess you've had a hard day at work. :D

But umm.. Modena was never in the picture. The factory has always been at Maranello IIRC. Maserati is based in Modena though.

Enzo was born in Modena.

Scuderia Ferrari was building pre war Alfas in Modena and so were the Auto Avio Costruzioni made cars and machine tools. He moved the Factory to Maranello in 1943. For record terms, Ferrari S.P.A. was formed in 1947 after the alfa clause ended but Modena played a crucial role for all those years.

When i visited the Galleria Ferrari last year, they had a display of Enzo's office from Modena and a display of the factory.

The only pic i found on the net, is this pic of his fountain pen and glasses that are in the display.

I have to check my camera for a pic, i dont remember if i took one.

Ferrari lost me after the 360 Modena. I think the 456 GT/GTA was perfect. The new designs looks odd and Japanese/Korean, not Italian.

I personally thought the 360 was when F-car design hit rock bottom, they are (very) slowly working their way back up.
