so im making my way back to florida tomorow. i was wondering what would i be better off doing as far as gas is concernd

should i go at a higher rate(80-90) for a shortewr amount of time (takes less time to get there at a higher speed)

or

go slower at less of a rpm and take more time?

whatever would yeild better mpg is what im looking for

any intelligent anwsers will be rewarded

Typically, you want to cruise around the fat of your tq peak. The reason for that is because it takes less effort to move the vehicle at the same pace. My tq peak starts around 3k rpm, which for me is around 60mph so when I cruise, I typically cruise around 60-65 mph. On the same token, the higher your RPM's are, the more fuel you're going to burn due to the fact that at higher RPM's the computer is gonna add more fuel to keep it from overheating from "leaning out". I hope that gave you your answer.

55mph, if you have a manual shift before hitting 4k rpms

dont just worry about how you drive, check you tire pressure, air filter, if you werent leaving tomorrow ide say do a full sea foam treatment. (depending on how old many miles you have) but you can just do a quick one of adding a can of sea foam to a full tank of gas, and clean your injectors out with some sea foam deep creep. but when you have time i highly recommend doing a full sea foam treatment. if your interested here is a good guide.

just dont do it from the hose directly on the brake boost like that says, do it after the little plastic separator/deregulator(?) or whatever the piece is that separates the 2 hoses between the brake booster and IM

that wont help you so much for tomorrow but will in the long run.

i found that if i cruise at 55-60 i get good mileage. an if i dont give a shit about how long its going to take me to get there i coast down hills and let the momentum if theres enough carry me back up hill.

i drove 80-90mpg from atlanta to dallas and got great gas miles in comparison to what i normally get. but in the end you just have to think what matters more to you. the 30 mins to an hour you may gain by going faster, or the few dollars you may save going slower

Notice on my dyno where my tq starts? notice where it starts to fall off? The more available tq the better gas mileage you will get.

DO you have the B8 or the BP? And are you a member of clubprotege? I too have a BG protege.

which is more important to you? an hour or 5 dollars? to me, an hour is more important. i would travel about 85-90 and not worry too much about the mpg

I bet you have a bunch of tickets, don't you? I'd rather cruise somewhere near the posted speed than to get busted for doing over the limit anyday of the week.

80-90 is the "unposted" speed limit for big interstates/highways. everytime i travel if im not going around those speeds im getting passed all over the place.

As an honest answer. Drive at night. Less traffic and temperatures would be cooler for a more efficient engine. You'd probably wouldn't need A/C either. Everytime I visit my brother in South Carolina, I drive at night.

i got my fair share of tickets, but that was when i was younger, ive only had 1 in the last year and that was on a recently changed speed limit road. ive never had one on the interstate. doing 85-90 on the interstate is about the norm. drive 70 and get ran the **** over.

If you have a BG, it's gonna come with either the 1.8L SOHC (B8) or the 1.8L DOHC (BP). Being that you said you have an LX it's gonna be the BP. I made a thread about me gaining fuel mileage. Do a search on my name in that forum under fuel economy and my sig in here will explain everything.

every 10mph over 60mph = a 4% reduction in fuel economy due to air resistance in the front and the vaccume effect in the rear. This is why racecars draft each other. Playing with your ignition timing can also increase fuel economy at certin rpms but reduce it in others this trick is realy only good for highway driving

More information on drag coefficients and such. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_drag_coefficients)

Realistically, the more important factor is how deep your foot is into the pedal through the course of the trip and how often you spend accelerating. If you want the best idea for saving gas: Get behind a big 18-wheeler, RV, or bus and shadow it. When you lose it and it turns off, find another. Oh, and try and drive at night, but make sure to get plenty of sleep and be well rested!

When you get to coasting down a hill for a good half a mile or so, put the car in neutral and just coast along. Not the most effective thing in the world, just an extra tip.
