And the grand winner is not surprisingly an engine from BMW, just like it has been for the last three years going back to 2005. The Bavarian automaker's 5.0L V10 won the award that year and in 2006, and BMW's luscious 3.0L twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine won it in 2007 and has repeated its performance by winning the International Engine of the Year Award again for 2008. We get it, BMW makes really good engines.

There were 11 other categories in which engines from around the world were honored, and no less than five of those were also won by BMW. Check the list below to see what other automakers were able to wrest an International Engine of the Year Award from BMW.

Best New Engine of 2008
BMW 2.0L twin-turbo diesel (123d)

Green Engine of the Year 2008
Toyota 1.5L Hybrid Synergy Drive (Prius)

Best Performance Engine 2008
Porsche 3.6L Turbo (911 Turbo, 911 GT2)

Check out the rest of the awards for individual displacement classes after the jump, and visit the source below for a lot of good information on why each engine was a winner.

No, they wont understand why German engineering took 6/7 categories.

Leave it to Subaru to fly the Japan flag.

Aren't majority of those BMW motors direct injection? If so, no wonder why they dominated.

Direct injection>>>>the rest

(Also, the K-series is old now and if I'm not mistaken these are new motors right?)

I'm mighty surprised the 3L TT diesel in the 335d/535d didn't win the award. Anyhow, I guess they're gonna win the top dog award in '09 too. The new 4.4L TT V8 and upcoming 5.5L V10 (550+ hp in the new M5) are no jokes..

The way you say that, it almost sounds like an unfair advantage.

Guess you've never read a thing about Nissan's VQs.

Read more than you'll be willing to.

You can see the VR was considered but in it's category, it deserves mention but the simple genius behind the S65B40.

Even though older BMW engines might have thicker walls for FI and capable of creating more power, this engine is designed to make power the right way and pass emissions and not break decibel levels.

My opinion of a street car differs than most of the people on this site. I've had cars that "can't pass emissions" or "tuned to the point they arn't reliable"

Most of these new production engines are meant to be fully capable from the factory. That's not saying the cant ever take more tuning but look at the VR38. What will more power really give it?

One thing i want to add is that this award doesn't only praise hp and torque but overall efficiency so fuel mileage is important as well.

I expect to see the 3.5L bmw diesel next year.

They will be importing those to the US.
