When the 193-MPH Nissan GT-R set a lap time of 7:38 last year at the 'Ring, besting cars like the Porsche GT3, Lamborghini Murcielago, and Mercedes SLR, the Nissan team was disappointed. There were two damp corners on the track, and everyone was quite sure that the car, piloted by official test driver Tochio Suzuki, could go faster.

Now it has. With a completely dry track, the base model Godzilla-san wearing stock Japanese-market tires shaved 9 seconds off its previous best time, posting a lap time of 7:29. On that same lap, it leapfrogged the Porsche GT2, Koenigsegg, and SLR 722 GT. Now it's flashing its headlights at the Carrera GT and Pagani Zonda F Clubsport, both about one second up the road. So if the standard model on stock tires does 7:29, and the more powerful, lighter GT-R V-Spec has already been casually clocked at 7:25 -- betting on what the GT-R's ultimate best lap time will be begins now... And did we say it can all be yours for $70,000? Damn.

I can't help but think they are playing with the tune/boost a bit. "Snake oil" is very common when it comes to get ring times for publishing. Either way, that thing is a F'n beast.

We'll see when it comes out. 70k for a car "as fast" as cars twice or 3x as much means they cut corners somewhere (hence the ****ty interior). In a year or two we'll start seeing those.

Fan boys crack me up.

Very impressive times none the less

very good times, but still rather have cars that are slower than it

I would think thats more a test of driver skill/crazyness/knowledge of the track, than just the car alone

for the average joe, yes. every manufacture that wants to post a good time on the 'ring to flaunt what their car can do hires a hot shoe that's very good and familiar with the track so you're getting a pretty good idea of what the car can do when driven to its limits. or at least, the test mule on THAT day on those set of conditions. I wouldn't be suprised if nissan put a little extra oomph in their car or had special tires on that day, but nonetheless is is an amazing time for a production car.

actually that time was done in stock form, stock everything including tires. Reason why this time is much faster then previous time was because of 2 wet turns in the first test. This time the track was dry and they managed to pull off an amazing 7:29 lap.

the ring has and always will be all about track knowledge if you don't know the track you could be in a bugatti and post a sh1ty lap time. but if you get somebody in a supra that knows the trap i would almost guarantee that the supra would be faster around the ring.

I respect the time it put me down don't get me wrong. I'm simply not surprised it put down a faster time with a different driver. The lap time says a lot about both the car and the driver equally.

1. same driver
2. the track was damp at a few corners at the first run
3. You cant think that any driver that runs the ring and has their times posted, doesnt have any experience on it.

For the other non readers, it says stock tires as well...
