View Full Version : Would you...

Would you rather get $2 more an hour for a job that is about an hour drive, or take $2 less to only have a 10 minute drive?
Keep in mind I drive a civic...

I'm in this situation.
(Last job didn't work out cuz they could only hire me part time.)

Anyways...
I live in Kennesaw, and the $2 more/hr job is in Smyrna. The environment would be more 'strict' but I feel like it could also be more rewarding. The lady who is offering me this job even mentioned that she might eventually pay for my gas... if things work out well.

Oh, plus the lady in Kennesaw, who is offering me a job for $2 less can only hire me for 35 hours a week instead of 40.

I'm thinking I will probably suck up the drive and take the better paying job.

Wha wha wha would you wha wha what would you do? (lol, had to...)

More Hours = More Money

Calculate it with the cost of gas and see how they balance out.

I did that, and gas is less...

But it's also wear and tear on my almost 10 year old car, and time...

its not gona balance, especially with gas prices continually escalading. unless you will love this job, dont make the move

Yeah. It takes about $40 bucks to fill up my car and it will go almost 400 miles.

rough estimate (just numbers):

$10/hr now = $400/work wk

$12/hr new job = $480

10miles to job now (20miles round trip) = 100 miles/wk

u fill up every 4wks so to speak, so every month, right now is $40/month on gas, speaking just on work

40miles to new job (80 miles round trip) = 400 miles/wk

u fill up every wk so to speak, so every month, in the future is $160/month on gas, speaking just on work

so here is your equation

$1600/month - $40/month = $1560 left over

$1920/month - $160/month = $1760 left over

as of that equation you have $200 to play with w/ your future job..plug in your numbers accordingly and make your decision that way...

But like I said, she said she 'might' eventually pay for my gas.

Key word in bold. If there is no guarantee that, in time, this will happen, I wouldn't mess with it.

40 x 8 = 320 Smyrna
35 x 6 = 210 Kennesaw

It's only about 20 miles between Kennesaw and Smyrna. You shouldn't have to fill your car up but once a week driving to Smyrna so I think they better option is to take the higher paying. Later, QD.

rough estimate (just numbers):

That's VERY rough.

All the numbers are wrong.

$10/hr now = $400/work wk

$12/hr new job = $480

The job paying two dollars/hour less is only going to be 35 hours/week. Therefore only $350/work week.

The distance to new job would be about 40 miles round trip as Smyrna is roughly 20 miles away. On her Civic, assuming it's in good running condition, she should get about 30 mpg. Thus filling up about once a week.

Later, QD.

well thats why i mentioned plug in the number accordingly..like i said that was just numbers. its up to her to apply those numbers to her situation, cuz obviously the pay was based off a 40hr work week

dang..u gave your old job 2 weeks notice?

Kelly
05-01-2008, 07:48 AM
I worked for them thru an unemployment program. Basically they didn't have to pay me anything for 8 weeks (just received my unemployment check) and at the end of that period, you either take the job or you don't. They told me they wanted me to stay, but they could only hire me part time "until July".... Keller Williams only allows you to change your budget twice a year. But she couldn't even promise me that I would be full time then... So I worked for them for free... waisted my gas, etc... for nothing...

Well, except a really good recommendation that probably got me this new job.

SO.... :dunno:

it is simple math...

we'll say approx:

10$ x 40 hours = 400 - (100 miles a week @ 4$ per gallon = 20$) = 380$ kennesaw

12$ x 40 hours = 480 - (300 miles a week @ 4$ per gallon = 60$) = 420$ symrna

yeah but you're not taking into account the wear and tear and depreciation on your car from the extra 200 miles a week ;)

yes but kinda hard to calculate that... but then again depreciation may not be a factor if she is driving a beater b/c at the current rate above she would make over 2000$ more a year and that is taking into account both jobs give her the same amount of hours :goodjob:

UNLESS it bumps you up into the next tax bracket and you can't claim enough deductions to drop back down. At that point, you would make less after taxes even though you make more per year on the front end. ;)

Basically, for what I paid to build my house and buy my land I could barely afford a 2 bedroom apartment 10 minutes from my work but I can't get the kind of money I make in or around my town. I hate the drive but I gotta do it. :screwy:
