I need a little help deciding on our next T.V. We have a few now of different makes/models but wondering what you think of this one and suggestions of a better one would be nice if you know of any.

F.Y.I. We really don't want anything larger than a 52 inch.

The Sony LCD's are pretty nice. (check those out) Just had a friend get one for around 1,400ish.

nearly everything is a plasma except for sony lcd's on there.

Yeah but they are on the budget side of the review. Check this one out. I have seen this T.V. rated at the top of several reviews simply because of the crystal clear picture with the 50,000:1 dynamic contrast. Circuit City has the 46 inch on display directly beside the Sony and even though I am a Sony die hard fan this Samsung has a better picture than the Bravia in a side by side comparison of the pictures. Remember the Sony only has a 18,000:1 and it does make a big difference if you can see then side by side on Blue Ray.

Now as far as the sound system goes the Sony kicks the piss out of the Samsung but I don't know too many people with a $4,000 T.V. without surround sound. :)

Even on Cnets top 5 they have the smaller/older version of this one at the top of the list.

sony's really aren't all that, you're paying more for the name than anything. samsung's aren't bad at the moment as far as bang for the buck. and if you're really ready to ditch the name brands altogether, i'd recommend vizio or olevia. i've got a small 32" lcd just for the bedroom and i've got no complaints.

I have a couple of the Vizio now but the contrast ratio for a Blue Ray just isn't there.

Don't get me wrong... I think they are definitely the best bang for the buck but I am wanting that perfect picture. :goodjob:

Yeah I love my Plasma but the LCD has come a long way since I bought my last one. Not sure the maintenance on the LCD but that is the way I am leaning now.

uh that was like 1st gen plasma, almost all of those issues are taken care of now...

yeah plasma's *from panasonic* are just as good as lcd's in terms of how they work and how long.

also yeah that new samsung lcd has a 50k contrast, but the new sony 4100 series are compared as a better picture.

if comparing it to the 3000 series from lasy set, yeah its better.

also btw, the "dynamic" contrast ratio numbers thrown around are mostly Bull**** btw. especially from samsung. You should compare a sony and samsung side by side, ones that are supposed to compete, aka lets say the w3000 with 65f or 71f with xbr4. and the sony will look better.

Check out avsforum.com and see their proffesional testing and calibrations from custom theater shop owners, and the sony does end up better. But yes.. not a whole lot better. in fact some people who dont care much will never notice it, but some who do can tell the difference.

The biggest issue with samsung mostly is that their DNiE processor is complete ****. Whereas the bravia is the best out there.

ANy.. any and all callibration settings for any samsung out there say you should turn off DNiE enhancements because it distorts color settings.


also the new cnet revies of 2008 so far have not reviewed the sony's, which hopefully they will get to soon.

If you guys wanna test the samsung vs sony true contrast find a dvd where you have a really bright scene, that transitions into dark. But some parts of the screen remain bright. Such as a scenic shot of a city at evening, and then time-slip into night, and the buildings are still lit, but the sky goes black. IN this test, the samsungs will go hazy on the whites and black. The only brands that ussualy do well in this test are sony, panasonic plasma's, and toshiba lcd's out of the main brands.. not including those high end stuff like the 7k Kuro's.

I did compare the Sony side by side playing a Blue Ray disk which was Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix and I honestly preferred the Samsung. Circuit City in Athens has em both and they are both awesome no doubt but with the lighting I have in my main living room is our main concern.

When I purchase a bigger T.V. for our main movie room then I will do a lot more research.

dont ever compare stuff at CC or BB. they dont know how to setup their ****. hhgregg prices are expensive but its a great place to compare products as most of their stuff is normally aways setup exactly the same with no adjustments. ive been to CC stores and they would adjust the tv's that gave em benifits to look better alot. Hell ive worked with former CC employes who said they've done it.

also fry's is a good place to check em out as their tv section is darkened

also btw go back and look at the samsung again.

When you set the samsung to dynamic it looks alot brighter and more vibrant.
but ur losing details. If there was a scene with alot of yellow and green colors, the colors dont look real, like looking at flowers and people.. samsung will look a bit unreal. Also the details/contrast in those brights will be gone, like a person's yellow shirt, you'll see less shades in the samsung.

again that is why on samsung u turn it off dyanamic. Turn off DNiE enhancements. and normally have to turn backlight lvl up in its place.. thats ussually the best way to set em. problem is tho for any tv having to turn up backlighting lvl's ussually results in more energy consumption and lower life span
