View Full Version : Moving out of The USA

Recently, I have been hearing a lot of talk about people wanting to move out of the USA. My coworker and I talk about it all the time. I would like to move somewhere exotic for at least a year, just to get a change of pace and see something different, and possibly become an expat. If I had to choose anywhere, I would probably go to Rio Di Janeiro Brazil. Beautiful weather, beautiful women, and relaxed people. But anyways... back to the point. I've been kind of nervous about doing it though, because in the back of my mind I always think of the US as the best Country on Earth. The thing is, I doesn't seem like it will be for very long. With the economy dropping, and the current Presidential candidate situation I think something is going to happen. Whether it is unemployment and homelessness running rampant, a civil war between the people who want the next president in office and those who don't, or Iraq joining up with someone else and coming after us. These issues are starting to take away from my fears of leaving and adding to my fears of staying. So I wanted to ask, do you think it would be good to go somewhere now while I'm only 21, single, and not tied down, or stick around and see if ourt nation's problems get fixed? And would it be abandonment if I have wanted to do it for years, not only because of recent situations? I'm just curios so please post up your opinions.:???:

P.S. From what I understand, theere are many jobs opening up overseas for American's who only know english to do the same jobs they do here, but for triple the money. I assume this is due to the recent outsourcing. They probably thought they could get people in other nations to do the jobs cheaper, but then realized that they had nobody to train them so noone knew what they were doing.

from what i understand, the US has always had the lowest gas prices. and we still do. now i may be wrong, but thats what ive been interpreting from what i read. everybodys just bitching cause we dont get our way anymore, and this may also spark some ideas to finally increase gas mileage and lessen dependence on foeign countries for oil. ever wonder why a lot of the cars in europe are diesels/small displacement engines/small cars/no suvs? its cause gas actually costs more.

as far as the economy, there have been several past recessions, and since 1929, weve always come back from it. theres also inflation, ****s always goin up in price in general. there have always been hard times, everywhere. they are inevitable.

but to answer your thread, i think it would be a great idea to visit another country for a little while. meet other cultures and experience other styles of life, and different aspects of your former country from other standpoints(there would be no biased views). maybe even learn some new languages.
however, i wouldnt base your decision solely off of the economy and gas prices.
just make sure youre pretty financially stable in the case that you decide to take a trip.

by the way you should have posted this in wallstreet. now that its in the WL, this is likely the only legitimate response you will get, though there will be many BS ones.

My judgement isn't soleley based on economy and gas prices, those are just some of the reasons that have recently come up in discussion and were still in the front of my mind. I have many reasons, I was just trying to be concise, because it's early and im tired. Honestly my main reason is just a feeling of being tied down. I feel like if I stay here something will happen and I won't even have the option of leaving anymore. I'm not saying only bad things either. I mean like getting married, having kids, or getting a job that keeps me here. I feel like if I get into the rat race I will never get out. And I don't feel like that is living. I might just be being pessimistic by having a "the grass is always greener" kind of attitude, but thats just how I feel. Thank you for giving me a real response. And I'm wondering what kind of BS is coming my way...

I think you would die of shock if I told you the US wasn't even in the top-10 cheapest places for gas on this planet.

propably some pictures of something like:
'welcome to the care factory-we are out of stock'
'epic fail'
'cats'
'fingers with disgusting holes'
'gtfo noob wrong section'

be prepared for a thread jacking, and many off topic responses, then people talking to each other, and occasionally a few rick roll'd links.

I dont think you really understand how funny it is.. You know why people in DUBAI have soo much money.. B/c we buy Iran's oil through DUBAI (i.e. embargo) Dubai people just have to put their names on as the owner of the company/oil

Yeah autralia sounds pretty cool. I have a friend who is studying abroad out there and he has nothing bad to say about it. He's actually planning on moving there permanently after he gets done with school.

ALSO for Chavez and his oil---

But it is a two-way street, leaving many to believe Chavez is issuing empty threats because — so far — he needs a U.S. market which accounts for something close to 50 per cent of his oil exports.

At three cents a litre, Venezuelans have the cheapest gas prices in the world, a fraction of the 56 cents they would pay for a litre of bottled water or the 70 cents they would pay for a litre of milk.

Partially correct. We buy Iran's oil through the UAE, not just Dubai. Dubai just happens to be the most well known of the seven states that collectively make up the UAE.
And not everyone in Dubai is mega rich. It's the folks in Abu Dhabi (another state) who are bad ass when it comes to the dough.

EDIT:
OP, I think you should check out Aus/NZ.. absolutely wonderful IMO.

Nah, I wasn't talking about Kris, but he has a great opportunity. I would do anything to switch places with him. But about what Jecht said, That is a big factor of me staying here. I have never been over seas before but I have been to almost every state and both Canada and Mexico multiple times. I think it's good to get out there and see the world since you only live once but I don't know about a few years abroad. Maybe a few weeks here or there but that's it for me. I don't think you understand how ****ing board you will be after a few weeks.

Americans in general (not all) are so accustomed to their lifestyle and change is both scary and stressful. Paul, I say jut save up some money and do your thing for a few weeks but nothing to long. I think you will regret anything longer. Multiple trips is the key!!! All I have to say is let me know when and where you are going!!!!!

i know an older sista(i'm black, not that that matters here)... but i know a sista i was cool with almost a year ago, that was talking about leaving the US.
her reasons were that from associates she knew in parts of government and other people, that things here were gonna take a rediculous nose dive.

she talked about the housing market tanking, of course the fuel costs and other things that i've now forgotten. but before the housing market was noticably bad she mentioned it would go this way...and 4months after i met her...she up'ed and moved to AMSTERDAM.

wow, you need to quit believing what you see on the news. The economy is not in as extreme of a slump as people make it out to be, the news media is playing on the weakness of the poor and people that are struggling. The only reason that it is in a slump is because people hear that "we are in a failing economy, tonight at 6:00 on the nightly news!!!!" so they quit spending money. If they were saying "the economy is doing great!" peoplpe would also believe that. I know that the value of the dollar is falling but we will recover from this like we have always done in the past.

My family and I went on vacation 2 weeks ago that probably cost my parent $20,000 total..... and that is just an example of one family, imagine all of the other familys that were in Hawaii during the same week that we were. So now try and tell me people aren't spending money on leisure and luxury's!

I have been to 12 countries and believe me, the U.S. is where you want to stay.

You go on $20,000 vacations? Do you wear Abercrombie & Fitch and pop your collar?

My opinion is that if you have the money and the will, do it. Travel as much as you can and then plop down in a place you like for a bit. There's a whole world out there, experience it. Just dont be an ******* American and expect everyone to speak English because they are in your presence.

Yeah, we are in for rough times ahead if something doesn't change. This is a great country, but it's getting out of hand. We have too many programs in place to take care of everyone. This is the only country in the world where you can expect to get a virtually free ride just because you don't want to work. You don't even have to be a citizen. You can cross the border, and have a child for free.

If you don't work, and don't have health insurance you can still walk into the ER, and they have to treat you. Guess who pays for it? The people that do work. People are quick to take advantage.

It's also the only country in the world that you can kill 5 people in broad daylight with 20 witnesses, and we'll spend 20 million dollars to provide you with legal defense. We'll give you a trial, and 2 appeals so you can plead quilty (for life in prison) at the last one to avoid the death penalty. And then we'll pay for your up-keep until you die naturally in jail. You'll even get your very own cell, while people that did non-violent crimes share one. We don't even make you work while your in jail to help payback society for your paying your way. We'll let you sit there all day.

You can even buy a house that you can't afford, and we'll bail you out. It's not your fault you didn't read the terms of your loan, and that you bought a new car without knowing your mortgage rate was going to go up. You can even run up 200K dollars in dept. It's ok, we'll let you file bankruptcy, and start all over.

sorry to let you down, but think how morally wrong it would be to refuse treatment to a critically wounded person who shows up to the ER, then watch them die infront of you. yeah it sucks, but if someone is shot or something, you just cant sit there with your thumb up your ass.

and a lot of people in jail are productive, they assemble wheelchairs, clean roadsides, do minor construction work.

Yeah I hear you. But why should i work everyday, have insurance, and still end up with a $2K bill? There is nothing wrong with those people coming back to the hospital every saturday to sweep the floor, wash sheets, something to pay it back either.
