BEHOLD!

lol...

Two clever Canadian teen-scientists have built a bizarre, eco-friendly electric bike which runs on principals similar to those of the Segway -- but looks way cooler. The motorized prototype (called either the "Uno" or "Tango," depending on who you speak with), sports two wheels side-by-side, sort of like a double unicycle which the rider sits directly above. The bike, based off of the frame design of a Yamaha R6 sport bike, can reach speeds of up to 40 MPH, and uses accelerometer technology to keep its balance. Inventors Ben Gulak and Jason Morrow say that the bike beats out the Segway in terms of speed, and delivers better maneuverability than Bombardier's Embrio unicycle concept. The whole package is surprisingly powered by amped-up wheelchair motors and 36-volt batteries. Next up, the young men plan to assemble a rag-tag band of colorful characters, get on their bikes, and ride into Neo-Tokyo during a riot

I was waiting for someone to post this up.

Looks are deceiving.. it's WAY easy to ride. Toss a leg over and lean it forward until it's horizontal and GO. Uses the same technology that the Nintendo Wii does to stay balanced. It hunkers down just like a sportsbike, and has the same rider stance. You'd never know there was a pair of wheels directly under you as opposed to in front of you and behind you like on a bike. Goes 40mph so you can use it in city traffic, but the WAY cool thing is that it's small enough not to be considered a vehicle, so when you get caught in crazy midtown surface street traffic, you can legally cut onto the sidewalk and continue on your trip. ^_^

So awesome. Want one when the production models are out.

^^^ Yeah, but the psychological factor of knowing there is only the two wheels directly under you when you are riding. Just seems like it would take a while to get used to. But hey, might be cool though.

It's weird. SCAD's holding onto one of the prototype models (since lord forbid some cool gadget be produced without SCAD getting ahold of it) and we got to play with it just before I left. It definitely trips you out just leaning forward, but you kind of accelerate as you lean... it feels more natural when you're actually moving. As you slow down, you come back up. It's a pretty cool little gadget.

And Alvin.. I meant 40mph. Electric or gas powered doesn't matter in speed. :goodjob:

I'm not the one who fell off it when we were playing with it...

This guy was:

PS... the balance thing gets all out of whack if you're over 6'1 lol

hmm... I could see someone losing their balance and running into whatever was in front of them because it started to accelerate on them... Well it would be interesting to say the least. At least it is something different looking!

I hung out with the inventor of this machine this past weekend, strangely enough. He was here for MIT's preview weekend for admitted students. He worked on our fsae race car with us for a while and then pulled up photos of that thing- pretty damn impressive. I think he said that he's decided to come here, so maybe I can get some video of this thing in action in the fall.

is it just me or does this remind anyone else of the mini bike?

Magnus213

...and he said it doesn't run more than 15 MPH or so, so I'm not sure where that 40 MPH figure is coming from.
