View Full Version : Slow moving progress....my DB1 integra...(56k may have EPIC FAIL)

Well, i figure, i finally have enough pics to actually show SOME progress on my DB1 that i got on here maybe a couple of weeks ago..

1st Needs:

-refresh the motor so that itll pass emissions...
-repaint it.
-I also had to change out the left front upper and lower control arms, outboard cv axle, brake rotor and steering knuckle... Thats the only thing i dont have pics of right now and WISH i had gotten some photos of the install, cuz thats the biggest thing ive done to the car so far. Took me 3 hours to do it.

brand new Plug wires, Oxygen sensor, and spark plugs FTW

4/12 - 4/14/2008

This is the car in my garage on jackstands after my little mishap with the left front axle deciding to snap off while i was driving because of the one bolt that holds the whole assembly on decides to be stripped out and wont hold the nut on......but 1st, it looks like a good time to start painting! After i finish, the car will be matte black.

LOL-- autozone can be your best friend.

Also, i'd just started some sanding and masking so i could prime the hood..

Here's a little more detail of the broken left front assembly...:ninja:

The bolt circled in red is the one that was completely stripped out. The lower control arm is circled in green...

and the CV laying on the ground...:(

Started taking it all apart...

Here's the nasty culprit right here!:2up:

http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/148/1000066wb1.jpg

As far as the actual installation? I mentioned earlier... i sadly did not get any pics of THAT:doh: , but i did it the very next day. Went to the junkyard and pulled the lower ctrl arm, upper ctrl arm, cv axle, and steering knuckle in 2 hours. Got it home, and installed it in 3 hours.

And, after the 14th, i had to go out of town for 1 week so no progress there either. Up til today, the only things ive done is continued painting the car, section by section, and i cleaned up my interior a little. Tucked the radiator switch and installed a triple gauge pod in the area where the radio is supposed to be.

lol.....EDIT again.... Im not gonna go to canton, ga tomorrow to get a cat and the car emissions ready, i decided to stay local with the emissions stuff. Instead, i might try to find the FORGED performance shop in marietta so i can maybe get a dyno run to see what kind of power im making before i do any engine work.

lol, i heard that supposedly they're doing an ''open house''/dyno day thing tomorrow, so ill check that out. :bump:

Went up to FORGED performance for their dyno day, and got my DB1 baselined.
My B18a1 base-lined at ~96whp:D lol fuel economy FTW...:lmfao:
also keep in mind, i havent even touched the car, engine/power wise.

Heres some pictaaas::boobies:

Here we are in the driveway this morning at 10:30, getting ready to head out to FORGED...

Had a bit of trouble pulling onto the dyno, because on the way over, one of my exhaust hangers decides to fall off so my exhaust hung too low and got caught on the edge of the dyno. lol, idk how they managed to fix it though with just a wood block:thinking:

Don't you think if your cat is bad you're losing power? I would have passed emissions before I spent $40+ on a dyno. Either way, can't wait to see more updates, I think a DB or an Accord would be next for me.

Honestly, im not sure how it would effect it. Plus, i should be getting the cat done some time today, cuz im almost running out of the 30 days that i can drive without a tag.

Plus i said that i wanted to get it dynoed and see what kind of power its making before i touch ANYTHING

I saw you said that, I just thought pretty much tuning the car up was something most people do when they get something new. I thought the anything meant any mods. But good luck.

woo, it feels good to finally have another UPDATE...:D

Anyways. The last weekend, as promised, i made an attempt at the head gasket replacement. Seeing as how im kinda not all that great of a mechanic and im still learning, i kinda failed at it..:( ..Fortunately, i didnt mess up my timing or anything else though.

I do have a couple of pics of that, if anyone would like to see them ill just post links to them. Furthest i got was removing the valve cover and dizzy, then i got frustrated and gave up (hehe there was much more to it than that though....:ninja: ). Links will be at the bottom of this post.

But heres what was done today; 5/5/2008 ~ happy cinco de mayo yall!!

YUK, nasty cat. If you are gonna take the cat outta your car, or do something similar to this, you're gonna need a breaker bar/impact wrench, and 13mm and 14mm sockets to get the nuts off the front and rear flanges.:boobies:

I plan on doing a resonator delete and port/polish of my intake manifold before i get dyno-ed again as well....One of my homeboys also said he has some dual spring valve springs for me as well  (??) that ill probably be trying to get in a day or two. Wo00t finally got that emissions test. I finally PASSED! Now i can finally go ahead and get my tag...ill probably do that tomorrow, if i get everything straight with the paperwork/title...

Essentially all i need to do is get it re-signed, and notarized, and an affidavit or something like that...

bureaucrats and paperwork FTL....
(no offense to anyone...:ninja: )

Next up, we've got a ported/polished intake manifold coming. Ill probably install some 310cc injectors from an Acura Legend, if my stock 245cc injectors wont make the car crank after i get the modded manifold on...

Due to the amount of space i have to work with on the intake manifold's runners, i think i might skip on the 310cc injectors and just stick with the stock ones. But i'm not sure...we'll see how it goes when i get everything installed...

-replaced oil pan
-spaced my hood
-did a cylinder compression test...average cylinder=140psi=I Need a rebuild before i boost.

anyways enough of MY clacking on the keyboard...PICS FOR YOU ALL!!!!!!!:bump:

Moving on....

Here's the deal with the ignition coil... On Saturday, right before i went to get my exhaust, my car ran out of gas on some small little back road. I sat there for about an hour before anyone helped me. Finally, i got some gas in my car, and what do ya know-- my car still won't crank. So now im like WTF, and i somehow got it running after taking apart and puttin back together my dizzy. Got it to the exhaust shop, got that done.... Drove up to pleasant Hill road and parked in the HobbyTownUSA parking lot, and guess what?? my car STALLS again. Cant get it cranked once again. Good thing my mom was with me, we took a couple trips to Autozone, picked up a brand new ignition coil, and installed it right there in the HobbyTownUSA parking lot. Been running great since then. Turns out my old ignition coil was the original from 1990. It was all cracked and rusty and stuff. No wonder it didnt work anymore. But yeah...... more pics fer yall.:camera:

http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/1097/1000178af1.jpg http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/289/1000177ee1.jpg

Moving on once again....

The oil pan. The oil pan that was on the car before the replacement had a bad drain plug nut. Basically, it wouldnt stay tight in the bottom, so it would leak oil alllll over the place, and i basically ran with nearly no oil for ~a month. Im glad i finally got that fixed. The oil pan i pulled out of the junkyard had some nasty like metal/shavings/melted residue in the bottom of it. I got that thing so clean you could pretty much eat jdm steamed rice out of it lol.:bump:
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/2608/1000179pb3.jpg

YUK! oil all over....
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/8741/1000182gq5.jpg

Oh, and last but not least.... the P+P intake manifold!!
all the runners have been widened a total of 1mm, and have been lowered 1mm as well to essentially make the vertical diameter bigger as well, and have been polished to be almost mirror smooth. I pulled the injectors from a v6 acura legend, those injectors are 310cc's i believe?? at any rate, it should alll work out once i get this installed and when i get the money for an AFC and FPR.
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/5158/1000187yr6.jpg

But yeah, Thats how the car sits NOW. From here, i can go on to doing mechanical upgrades. I need an engine swap or rebuild, and then i can boost.. I almost just want to go ahead and get a turbo, and boost the current motor til it blows. Since its already so weak i figure i might as well...:(

lol, thanks to all of you all who have looked at, and left comments on my build thread.

I know i havent posted in the thread for quite some time, but its due to the funds being somewhat low and i just havent been taking pictures of all my parts. I DO on the otherhand have one sort of "upgrade" that i installed recently, and thats an Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I waited for 3 weeks for it to come in the mail all the way from California. It was a really good deal though. :D

When it got here though, it was slightly damaged in the fact that one of the fittings that let the gas flow through had a bit of a leak and the fact that the gauge on the regulator doesnt work either.

Also, i recently had to change my intake manifold back to the stock one due to the fuel rail brackets snapping off the P+P manifold:doh: . Overtorque-ing FTL..... But believe it or not, i felt better with the stocker on there. No more jerkiness.

PS..... DSM INJECTORS? ~INSTALL THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK...:ninja:
(they did NOT work for me....long story....)

Also, we just recently ordered me a custom tag as well. It'll be here in August.

Next Few Mods to come (before engine rebuild) will be:

-Upgraded motor mounts, whether they be solid welded or inserts
-drop (on something cheaper than TEIN...). I think ill get Eibach lowering springs instead.
-more weight removal
-chassis stiffening. (strut tower bars, sway bars, frame welding, etc.)
-HiD head/fog lights....courtesy of Nitro, more than likely.

Heres just a couple more small things i did...that i forgot about...:D
-a little weight reduction, in the front bumper..(dont lecture me, i KNOW about the 'safety risk'...)
-Sunpro oil psi gauge.

Notice how you can see ALL the way through to the ground now....

Heres a bit of an update:

finally i have some concrete plans for the rebuild of the engine. I'm going to start out with the head, and valvetrain...... In the end, after i spend all the money and put the time, blood, sweat, and tears into it, im hoping the motor will be able to handle at the max, 16psi. I'm not sure how much WHP that will net me but, i can only guess it would be in the area of 3 - 400(?) Any of yall who comment, do you think that the some of yall could give me a bit of guidance and positive feedback as to if the list looks good? Some of this stuff i've already gotten as well. I'm just taking it piece by piece.

Here it is:
(instead of using a checkmark to represent what i already bought, ill use this::goodjob: . So anything i've already bought will have one of those next to it...)

HEAD
-new oem headgasket :goodjob:
-new oem valve stem seals
*intake
*exhaust:goodjob:
-ARP head studs
-Ferrea Competition Plus valves - part no. F1449P
-Ferrea Radial Valve locks "7 deg." - part no. K10034

-Ferrea Titanium Retainers - part no. E11031
-Ferrea Spring Seat Locator - part no. SL1026

I have also come to the conclusion/revelation about my car as well..... Due to its strange behaviour this past weekend, with wanting to shut off randomly and due to the fact that i have a rough wheel bearing in the front, and due to the fact that one/both of my axles are on their last leg, i decided that "I'm going to BABY it til its BUILT!":goodjob:

UPDATE:

I now have yellow fogs, and the Apex'i VAFC is on its way. It should be here by Wednesday or Thursday.... Also, i got my hands on another stock intake manifold, so im going to be attempting to port and polish it again. The last port and polish went okay, but i couldnt tune for it and it made my engine jerk a little through the rpm range up to redline, and the port/polish came out with slight grooves in it because instead of me using some type of electric device like a dremel or something like that, i used a manual file. This time when i do it, ill be using something better than what i used before so hopefully it'll come out better this time.:goodjob::boobies:

I'll have pics of the fogs later on when i get a chance to take them.....

lol, slow moving progress thread is moving along still VERY slowly. My most immediate mod to come will be a trunk latch so that ill finally be able to close and LOCK my trunk in a "non-ghetto" fashion;) .

The main reason i've been procrastinating so much on writing in the thread or even working on my car is because 1st of all, i didnt/dont know exactly how a trunk latch works so, im going to be learning HOW it works at the same time whenever i can get my hands on it.

Second reason is because my local junkyard, PullAPart, has been kinda low on supplies.... I went there three or four times in a row looking at all of the 88 - 91 Integras for something that i need, and they didnt have it. And, its not like major parts such as axles or engine parts or anything like that, but just cosmetic things like a turn signal cover or trunk latch:rolleyes: , and i cannot believe they didnt have it. Not only is the yard low on parts for my car, 99% of the Integras in there have already had their engines removed....

but anyways...let me stop complaining and making excuses. More pics will be up VERY soon!!! I've got pics of my electronics work/interior gutting process on the way... I am trying to remove the HVAC system, because it serves basically NO Purpose to me, and its just excess weight to be removed.

And, also, most/all of my parts that i remove from my car will be up for sale very soon here on IA and/or on eBay.

UPDATE~~ 6/26 - 27/2008 -

The other day, my oil pan sprung a leak, because Honda decided they wanted to put 2 drain plugs in the Integra pan. One made of metal, the other made of rubber. The rubber one is the one that popped out, and made oil spill all over Buford Highway/Jimmy Carter. So, i finally got the correct sized bolt that i could basicallly create some threads in that hole, and installed a couple of rubber o-rings around the bolt. I think it should hold the oil in nicely. (Hopefully....)

Also, Yesterday, i FINALLY GOT some NEW RIMS on my car. I got them for $350 from one of my friends who had them on his car previously. He said they're basically buddy club replicas (?). But, not only did i get the rims, with tires on them, i got an EXTRA set of basically brand new tires on the side. One of the rims had a bit of a flat tire on it though, so at the moment my car is only running on 3 rims, and one steelie. I'll be getting pics of the rims and the little ghetto oil-pan bolt that i installed tomorrow, and i'll be getting the 4th tire mounted on the rim hopefully tomorrow as well. I also finally fixed my trunk latch as well, so no more bungee cords or shoestrings holding my trunk closed! I'll keep you all posted!

More Pics to come tomorrow afternoon (6/27/2008)......:camera:

Hey, all of you, 1st off, let me just apologize for taking so long with the pictures of the rims on there. I had a bit of a problem with the tires that were originally on the rims. I had to keep changing a rim or 2 almost every day for the 1st 2 days i had them, because a tire would go flat. I was rolling with 2 steelies, and 2 rims for a minute, and who would want to see pics of that?

But also, lately, i've not only been working on getting the rims situation straight on the car, i've also started a little bit more weight reduction. I began removing the sound deadening material from the car. MAN who would've thought that stuff was actually heavy? I also started removing the HVAC system, because it was ~99% useless to me anyways, it had no A/C and the heat wasnt all of that. So, that equals, excess weight to be removed!:goodjob:

But now. ON TO THE PICS!!!:camera:

1) Heres the rims for all of you voracious wheel whores out there!!

6) Here's the other tire.... It wasnt flat, but it was definately on its way~ Look at that big GASH in it.... Where'd THAT come from?

Well, as far as the wheels/tires go, thats all i've got!! But now, here's the second part.... A bit more weight reduction. Here's removing the sound deadening material....:ninja: Who would've thought that stuff was actually heavy?? I know how they always say that it weighs ~10lbs. and personally, i never believed it could actually weigh that much. But, now i can believe it. After just removing one section of it, i think i got out ~a little less than 4lbs from the car. Next step = get it weighed....:goodjob:

8) Let's get started!:D

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn149/madking411/100_0291.jpg

11) ~4lbs right there in that bucket:bump:. I'm going to weigh the bucket after i get finished taking out all of the material and storing it here.

Okay, 7/16 - 7/18/2008.

Its now time to update, even though i dont have any pics of the things i installed. Can't find the camera at the moment..:ninja: The two last things i installed were, an Apex'i VAFC2, and a solid motor mount. Also, my next thing to purchase and install will be a couple of racing seats, similar to the one in the picture. Then, i will be getting my exhaust resonator removed, and a straight pipe installed in place. There is a long story behind the VAFC....

http://www.qualitycustomparts.com/images/Ronin%20Leather.jpghttp://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/twincamtech_2009_30445537

The Story on the VAFC:

Well, here is what happened. I ordered the Apex'i V-AFC2 from someone on ImportAtlanta, about 5 weeks ago. I immediately paid him, through PayPal and I was thinking that everything was okay. He contacted me, telling me that the product was on its way. It should have been at my house, not even a week later, because the person i got it from is located in Tennessee, and it was going to be a quick transit time. One week passes.... Still nothing. :( Another week passes.... still nothing. So, i finally begin to talk to the guy again, just to check up to make sure he didnt take my money and run with it. Turns out, he didnt. He told me that the USPS sent the package back to him, three times. At this point, i am trying to figure out why in the world the USPS keeps sending it back to him.
Then, what i do is i continue to talk to him, and tell him to send the package to my local post office, and have them hold it at the office. Well, low and behold, i go out of town for a week. When i return, i am expecting a package to be held there at the Post office. Still nothing.... Keep in mind, at THIS point, it has been 3 weeks and the package should have come 3 DAYS after paying this guy.
So. I start talking to the guy again, telling him where to send the package, and im giving him different possible addresses, and all of that. He then starts to send me pictures of the package and the address. It turns out that, he wrote the address on the package WRONG. He put my name on the top line, the item name on the second line, and then the rest of the address on the bottom two lines. :lmfao: :lmfao: :lmfao: So, finally, I tell him how to write the address on the package, and to NOT include the item name on the outside of the package, and he sends it; it gets here 2 days later.

5 weeks.

Then, i come to partially install the VAFC in my car, and crank the car to test it. The screen shows up nothing. The thing is broken. In the mail, the part got broken. So, at this point, the VAFC2 is sitting in my car, hooked up to power and ground, with no screen action.:2up: USPS!

hah wow, how long has it been since i posted in this thread?
Lol, it seems like its been forever since i last posted, but theres a reason for that. The reason is, because i had finally "finished" the car, i got it all up and running, i got it painted, emissions ready, and all of that. Since all that was taken care of, i had no reason to post. But, now there's a reason to post. This time, its all about the engine.
The past few days, i found that my engine had piston rings that were so bad, that the engine would blow oil pan gaskets like you wouldnt even know. I replaced the gasket 4 times, and then, thinking that i was doing something wrong when installing it, got it professionally done a 5th time. Then, even with a professional install, it blew out AGAIN:eek: . This time, i was fed up with it and decided to drive for about a week or so, with the pan gasket leaking everywhere i go, and constantly filling the motor with oil. Well, it just so happens that one day, i forgot to fill the car with oil before i left school and i get on the highway and my oil lamp comes on and stays on. Well, i was at Sugarloaf parkway, and i was hoping to make it back to at least pleasant hill before stopping and filling the oil. BOY was i wrong:no: . I began to feel the engine lock up, and i also began to see more smoke, and my water temp gauge was moving up as well. So, i stop, turn the engine off, and fill it with oil. Then, from here, i jump back onto the highway and within the space between pleasant hill and jimmy carter blvd, the engine was completely OUT of oil again. so i finally got home and the motor began knocking ever so slightly. stopped, parked, and replaced the oil pan gasket. re filled with oil and i also put some Lucas Oil Stabilizer in there too. But i noticed that there were some metal chips in the bottom of the pan that looked like they were made from copper or something...possibly my main bearings got chewed up slightly?

I re-assemble it, hoping and praying that itll run and that i wont need a new motor (immediately anyways...). i cranked it back up, and it ran just fine.:goodjob:

UNTIL!!!!!

I'm coming on my way home from DiscoverMills mall, and i get on at Sugarloaf once again, and i drive to Jimmy Carter blvd. Next thing i know, the engine is overheating, and randomly wanting to idle like complete s***. It would drop the rpms to 200 then raise them to 800 then drop, raise, drop raise. Every time the rpms would drop, the engine oil lamp would come on...:( ...so im freaking out, trying to get it home so i could see what was wrong. I thought that i had cracked my block, but upon further inspection, there werent any cracks anywhere.... Also, in other places, there was nothing that i could see visibly, so i said this is the LAST STRAW. I sat the car up on jack stands and took the head off the motor.....and this is what i saw....

http://a142.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/71/l_6103fb302136a8d9c5d23b685202ba15.jpg

Now, somehow there was coolant getting into my cylinders, becase on cold startups, a S***LOAD of white smoke would come pouring out the exhaust....and, when i took the head off, i noticed there was some coolant in each cylinder as well....then, upon further inspection of the cylinder head and of the intake manifold, i find that the coolant passage was COMPLETELY BLOCKED with GRIME:eek:  :2up: . Now, the way i think this probably worked is.....

1 - it had the passage blocked.
2 - water pump kept pumping harder and harder, psi grew....
3 - psi got to be too much that it just started seeping coolant into the cylinders....
4 - when that happend, it separated the headgasket....causing the terrible idle.

Thats just an educated guess though, lol;)

Heres pics of it..

-Dual valve springs
-titanium retainers
-milled .020"
-new valve stem seals
-backcut valves
-5angle valve job

teh_mugen18
09-15-2008, 07:11 PM
The paint is matte black. I havent gotten it professionally done, and i probably wont for a good while, because theres something hot that i find about a car that is somewhat ugly, but not TOO ugly but is fast as balls.:boobies: :D

Now, i know my car isnt fast like that, but hey-- the money i would put into getting paint can be contributed to me making it become fast as ballz one day;)

BTW:: HERE'S AN UPDATE, I WAS WORKING ON THE ENGINE FOR THE PAST FEW HOURS SINCE I MADE THE LAST POST, HERE IS PICTAS:

i cleaned and prepped the head...cleaned and prepped the block...cleared out that blocked coolant passage....installed new head gasket.....torqued the head down. here is where i am now, because like an idiot, i left ALL my rockers down at the engine shop, so it looks like ill just have to go pick them up tomorrow in order to continue with the build and get it all finished up:goodjob:

btw...this is the installation of the stock head, not the modded one. The modded one is at the shop now being assembled.

UPDATE:

Okay, wow. the engine is worse than what i thought. I rebuilt the top end, and installed a new head gasket.....cranked the engine up, and what do i get? a SH*T-TON of white smoke coming from the exhaust, but not only the exhaust, i get a whole lot MORE from underneath where the timing belt is, and where the oilpan meets the block, and it knocks a little louder now...
I can't really stand it anymore, so im just gonna have to get a swap. And its going to have to happen in the next couple of weeks because i've got to have my DD to get to school and back and its gonna be a lot of miles daily...

Called the engine shop, had to call off the head build so i can put that money towards getting a new motor.....Cross the fingers for a B20B!:bump:

Also, since i might be getting a b20, i might sell the LS modded head for someone else to have fun with. Let me know how it runs, whoever buys it from me.

UPDATE: well, its a little bit late for the B20b...that won't be happening, i ended up buying a B18B out of a 1994 teg, with only 110k on it and the place said they test-drove the car/engine, and it has no smoke of any kind, and its got ~85 - 100% compression on it, so that's what's going in the teg, not to mention it has a 3 month warranty....
also, the progress on the swap has been EXTREMELY fast also, probably the quickest progress the car has made since i got it... After only 2 class days (or about 2 hours...MANhours is another story..), we got ~most of the engine ready. Theres about a 95 - 100% chance that tomorrow will be the day the engine comes out... lol my first engine swap, can't wait til i get it complete. The instructor told me that me and the class should be able to turn the car around and get it all up and running before the end of next week.

DiY Labor FTW, thanks a lot you guys who helped out on the project

Small update....ValveCover painted....and cams(yep painted too.:D )
Its kindof weird, i think, how i did the valve cover this time because it seems to change colors slightly in the dark vs. in the light...Camera probably didnt capture that, but IRL thats what it does....

Hi, IA its me again. Havent been on here posting the build but it has most definately continued on even though i left it cliffhanging right before the biggest part of the project; The b18b1 goin into the car and finally having it run again. I'll probably post up the pics of that, and update you all as to what's been goin on with the car since...almost literally a YEAR ago, per someone on here who pm'd me looking for inspiration building the same car that i'm still in the process of putting together.

But first, heres a few snaps of the engine coming out/going in... We did this last year, at my high school in the shop class; it was the first BIG project of the year lol.

TO THE PICS!!!:

Now, y'all will get to see just a couple of the engine going out/being put back into the car. Its too bad i didnt really take any pictures of the engine WHILE it was out. Ended up taking nearly two months with the swap, but thats the only way to go through and inspect/clean EVERY single tiny little part and piece to make sure that when it went back together, it was a nearly immaculate swap... well with the exception that i didnt paint my engine bay..:ninja:

OK, so i had somewhat of a clean engine bay to begin with, but i noticed to myself that there was just one fat harness snaking its way across the engine bay from top to bottom on the right wall inside, and so i decided i needed a way to hide it/get rid of it. it was almost too much for me to bite off and chew because there were 14 wires inside this one harness, and i had to cut it and extend it around the outside of the engine bay to make it work, and took +4hours with me and a soldering iron after having cut the wires, to re-seal, insulate, and extend the wires. but anyways; onto the pics!
***SMALL disclaimer; this part might have some instructions to it, but if you follow my instructions and completely fry your car, it aint my fault. yu know, Just Sayin'...

1)engine bay... kinda clean.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214534636485_1022373964_684947_3921679_n.jpg

2)this little fat harness...
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs208.snc1/7528_1214534716487_1022373964_684949_3628714_n.jpg

3)OK, so i was thinking, where should i put this wire... ill try to slide it under the motor mount for starters....
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214534796489_1022373964_684951_6745571_n.jpg

4) But first, the stuff labelled below is just about everything you'll need to do this, minus the soldering iron, solder, shrink wrap, and electrical tape.

stuff listed:
-2 jacks
-breaker bar
-19mm socket
-17mm socket
-block o'wood
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214534836490_1022373964_684952_5899491_n.jpg

5)jacked up the car....
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214534876491_1022373964_684953_700287_n.jpg

6)this is where jack #1 comes in handy... please ignore that little rash down there where the car was jacked wrong before..
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs208.snc1/7528_1214534916492_1022373964_684954_4937635_n.jpg

7)Next, the second jack and the trusty block o'wood comes in handy to hold the engine in place, because when you remove the engine mount on that side, the engine has to be supported by SOMEthing...
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs208.snc1/7528_1214534956493_1022373964_684955_4740371_n.jpg

8)HM... idk if i posted this before, but PB Blaster FTMFW!

9)ah yeah, now the mount is out, and we can slide the wire underneath...
Hopefully it wont rub on the alternator/timing belts..
http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214535076496_1022373964_684958_3055403_n.jpg

10)eh, just not enough space.. time for Plan B...
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs208.snc1/7528_1214535276501_1022373964_684963_699328_n.jpg

teh_mugen18
10-12-2009, 06:06 PM
OK, so here's plan B on the wire tuck; to cut through the harness and extend every wire into the fender well and still have everything work out just the way it would from the honda factory :goodjob:

1)unraveling 18 year old tape...!!!
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214535316502_1022373964_684964_6359719_n.jpg

2)OK, now the next step to do is label each and every wire twice, that way you know what goes where after you chop them and extend them. You label them twice, one for each new end.
http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214535396504_1022373964_684966_3479962_n.jpg
http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/5317/14wires.jpg
The Hardest part of it all..
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/6249/14wirescut.png

3)Yay, now that the wires have been cut i can run them outside of the engine bay, therefore making it look much cleaner! The only bad part about this is the fact that i now have 28 total connections to re-solder, and insulate perfectly or else my car is going to have some electrical issues... Also, its obvious that they dont reach anymore. so, a nice 450ft roll of 18gauge wire should take care of it.:D
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs208.snc1/7528_1214535516507_1022373964_684969_5062490_n.jpg

5) Two hours later..partially done...the rest looks the same, only more like a rat's nest. lol i didnt get a final picture of the entire finished product but it looks a lot better than what's below.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs228.snc1/7528_1214535596509_1022373964_684971_4412812_n.jpg

OK, now i know that slow-moving progress has actually seemingly gone lightspeed with the progress but its been over the time period of almost a year, please keep that in mind... but next, i figured that its time to build a little bit of power from the engine. But before you build power, its always nice to know what you're working with.

1) On Batlground's dyno for three pulls...

OK, as some of you all know that the last thing that i did to the DA was i installed a GSR head onto the LS block, and converted the car to OBD1.... Well, i ended up spending a nice bit of money on it all, and didnt get a chance to upgrade the most crucial part of it, which was changing the LS oil pump to a P72 oil pump... which caused my engine to not like me anymore, and also caused it to send a rod through the block.. And before anyone jumps on me about it, i know i know i'm learning a VERY expensive lesson the hard way and if i build another one of these the oil pump will be the FIRST thing i change out.. Here's pics...:( R.I.P. b18b1.

Wow nice carnage shots. I don't think you can solely blame the oil pump for that kinda failure. It was just a shitter bottom end that was used as hell. At least LS bottom ends are really cheap.

anyways, now that my engine is blown... i figured its either time to say goodbye to the DA chassis, and at first i was going to part out the car in order to help fund another car coming into the family, but when it came down to hacking the car up and selling its pieces i just couldnt do it :(..

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2998/yea4.jpg

And, so i just decided to swap it out, and do a little or a lot more sprucing up around the car while its down and while i have the space in the engine bay to have a little bit of fun with it..////

Things to be done:

1) About to take the axles out....

4) And, clean up the brake booster and probably remove another little random bracket thats on it as well.

Since that last motor blew, was the last time I updated this thread.. well, I'm gonna go ahead and update it again as of now due to the fact that I have a balancing out of the parts... First of all, I rebuilt another LSvtec after that one with the 100,000mile bottom end decided to spit a piston and rod out the side of it... Which was sortof a hard thing for me to finally decide on doing since my reasoning was, ''why would i build an 'almost' exact copy of the engine that i just recenly blew up within 5days of having it running..?'' and I almost sold all the VTEC parts in exchange for some turbo parts. Which probably would've been just as fun for me, running and building. :goodjob:

But anyways, here we are.. I ripped out the motor/trans
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs040.snc3/12735_1247181612639_1022373964_787366_5930607_n.jp g

LOL i knew that hole was gonna be good for something...

Then, shortly after that, I separated the engine from the transmission, and got to work tearing the rest of the block down just to see what the true condition of the rest of my equipment was before it blew..

Everything else internally, looked somewhat good other than the fact that there was a hole in the block, and a crankshaft with one completely chewed out journal... Turns out, that the failure was due to this:

Broken and Bent Rod bolts.... probably when the first one was starting to break, or had already broken was when the knocking started... and then next thing you, know, it all went flying.

LOL only took me about a day or so to do that block ''autopsy'', and i was onto my next venture; rebuilding a new heart for the 4-doe, and cleaning up...
