Cobb official offends some with comments at church

White people and 'non-Christians': Commissioner was to speak about black history, but she strayed from the script.

Cobb County (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) Commissioner Annette Kesting veered off script when she stood in the pulpit of a local African-American church recently, talking about her challenges working with white people and non-Christians.
Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marietta had invited Kesting, the county's first black commissioner, to speak as part of the church's 21st Annual Black History Celebration.

• More Cobb County news (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/index.html) But in a rambling half-hour speech, Kesting decided to touch on other topics as well, including what it is like to work in the county government headquarters.

In an interview last week, she stood by her comments, but later softened her position.

"I love my enemies. I pray every day with my enemies because I have to go up on the third floor and work with white women," she said in her Feb. 17 speech, which was captured on a video for sale at the 1,200-member church.

Kesting said she had been "lied on" and "talked about" as commissioner and added that she senses "evilness" surrounding her when she goes into the office.

"You would be amazed seeing the people I work with at the county. They are not Christian — Christian people," Kesting said.

Kesting told the audience that "you can't blame everything on the white man" and mentioned that she married one. She continued: "A lot of white folks are mad because I married a white man because I am a black woman," she said. "Why? They would marry a black man if he got money. OK?"
Last week, Kesting said she does not count white women among her enemies, despite what she told the church. She also said she represents people from other religions in her racially diverse south Cobb district and gets along with them.

Kesting said she used her speech to respond to questions she said she got from the public about what it is like to serve as the first African-American commissioner in the county. She said her talk was in keeping with the theme she was invited to address.

"My remarks at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church were intended to motivate and inspire women in the church to keep moving towards a better life for themselves and their families," she said in a statement she issued through a county spokesman Friday. "I am really sorry that my remarks offended some members of the church and hope that we as a community can continue to work together."

Church officials did not read Kesting's speech in advance, said the Rev. Randolph Scott. He invited Kesting to talk about African-American history and the theme "Strength to Love," the title of a book by the Rev. Martin Luther King (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/martin-luther-king-index.html?cxntlid=linkr) Jr. Scott called Kesting's comments about white women and non-Christians "unnecessary."

Several church members were not happy with Kesting's speech, Scott said. He said Kesting will not be invited to speak at the church again.
"I did call her, and I told her that I was not pleased with her speech," said Scott, the church's historian. "I said, 'Many of the parishioners in my church felt very strongly that you did not stick to your theme.' I was not happy with it."

Kesting denied Scott told her he was displeased with her speech.
James Jackson Jr., chairman of the church's deacon ministry, said Kesting may have dwelled on herself too long in her speech, but he wouldn't mind having her back to speak.

"Some people who have that mind-set and can't get out of it, they might think it was a racist speech," he said. "But it wasn't. If that was [racist], boy, they must not talk to their children about anything."

Kesting is running for re-election to serve as one of five members of the Cobb County (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) Board of Commissioners, which sets tax rates, controls local development and crafts local laws.

Cobb Commission Chairman Sam Olens, who is Jewish, said he was not offended by Kesting's comments about non-Christians because he sensed she was talking about "loving God" as opposed to criticizing other religions. But he said he was "embarrassed" about how the church might view the county after Kesting's speech.

"The county embraces the diversity of our residents and views that diversity as a strength," Olens said. "It is unfortunate when personal comments detract from our service to the community."

KESTING'S COMMENTS
Excerpts from Cobb County (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) Commissioner Annette Kesting's Feb. 17 speech to Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marietta:

"I look at the people who work for the county and I say, 'Boy, things are just not right.' Speak up and speak out. But you know they are afraid. They are afraid they are going to lose their jobs. ... Sometimes in the workforce you have to be a leader because you work around people who are not Christian people and you have to know how to ... talk to them. Not only that, you can teach them. You can teach your own supervisor how to love and how to strengthen herself or himself on the job."

"Believe me, there are times when I get home I can get downright [groan] about what this white woman done to me today, about what this white man done to me today. And we talk about it. There was times that I go home crying because this white woman done this to me today, because she said this and she said that. But you know what? I still smile and say 'Good morning.' "

Michael Richards better known as Kramer from tv's Seinfeld, does make a good point.

This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. HE MAKES SOME VERY INTERESTING POINTS.

Proud To Be White

Someone finally said it.

How many are actually paying attention to this?

There are African Americans, Mexican Americans,
Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc.

And then there are just Americans.

You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.

You Call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,'
'Whitey,' 'Caveman' ... and that's OK.

But when I call you, ******, Kike, Towel head,
Sand-******, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink ...
You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you,
so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund.

You have Martin Luther King Day.

You have Black History Month.

You have Cesar Chavez Day.

You have Yom Hashoah.

You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.

You have the NAACP.

You have BET.

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists.

If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists.

If we had White History Month , we'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance'
OUR lives we'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber
of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce.

Wonder who pays for that?

A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American
pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.

If we had a college fund that only gave white students
scholarships you know we'd be racists.

There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges
in the US .. Yet if there were 'White colleges' THAT
would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were
marching for your race and rights.

If we marched for
our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and
you're not afraid to announce it.

But when we announce
our white pride, you call us racists.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us.

But, when a
white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats
up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a
threat to society, you call him a racist.

I am proud.

But you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?

There is nothing improper about this e-mail.

Let's see which of you are proud enough to send it on.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and
you're not afraid to announce it.

Seeing as none of us were around during the times in which we could actually BE proud and this being the only comment I think I can talk about.

We can be proud now, for what those before us have accomplished. I cannot just go around actin "black" dressing "black" and being "black" in certain settings. We must all act accordingly. Yes, I'm proud to be black and to have a black family and all that, but believe me, we are afraid to announce it most of the time.

All that marching and stuff is just history, just as the flags and chants and dances from all races.

For the colleges... which I find odd. "Historically black" doesnt mean that it is ALL black and is only for black people. Most all other schools whom are not counted as "historically black" are considered white schools unless otherwise specified.

We have the NAACP and the UNCF to help aid us whom cant get help due to credit or any other number of reasons why a black child (and other races) cannot be granted financial aid and so forth.

U can write a poem about it, u can write a book about it. But unless u were ME or any other race other than ur own, then u cant tell us how we feel and what we have is fair and enough.

Live in my shoes and struggle for a few years. Get looked down upon because ur chocolately or ur voice isnt "rich" enough or ur hair is fuzzy or somethin lame like that. Get threatened by folks u dont kno because u just so happen to be dark. Get called a "porch monkey" yet not be anywhere near what that name may suggest then come write ur poem about racism.

Even if my comment isnt accurate and someone wants to talk ish to me BECAUSE I wrote it, so be it. Thats how I feel when things arent just and fair and equal, which they will never be. White people dont have to HAVE days, because most all days are those withheld for white folks. I may be obviously wrong, but given the fact that we have to MAKE days for others, like black history month, just shows a lil somethin.

I've lived somewhat in your shoes for more than a few years. Although I don't know (inside) what it feels like to be looked down upon because my skin color, but think about this. In some instances, I've actually had it worse than you. You're black and some white folks frown on for that. How about a white dude that's become a "traitor" to his own race? When I'm walking around any mall or grocery store or wherever with my oldest daughter, it wasn't surprising to see white folks scoff at me and hearing the comments that I've ruined my life. The pressure can be just as hard on me because I "could have it made" but instead I chose to "fucc my life up" because I'm relating to and starting families with black folks. To me, I have it made more than ever because of my relationship with my black folks. I'm the proud owner of the knowledge of another more proud and storied culture than my own. If you don't know it now, minorities are more proud of their history than the white race is of their own. Later, QD.

Oh yea, I kno. I've seen. Thanks to this part of Ohio. OH yea, one of my friends gets looked down like that cuz he is with a white woman and they have kids. Neither of the family members doesnt like it, from either side, but those who look at them and their kid seem to show disgust. I'm not bashing, just sharing a somewhat reasonable thought from a black man in a white state, thats all. No need to push buttons.

One person's opinion and she doesn't speak for the entire race. I don't think there has ever been a day in my life that I came home and said "Damn those white people, they just make my life so hard."

On the flip side one cannot speak for another person's experience and struggle. I am not saying she is justified in what she said but rather you never know what a person is going through.

I tend to wonder why our elected officials are so jaded. A part of me wants to pursue becoming a politician.. but I don't know if it would work out. I guess at some point you have to stop complaining and start taking action.

Richards never said that, no one knows who did.

I dont see why people are so suprised. She was pandering to the demographic of the crowd and trying to use her race to an advantage in her coming re-election bid. If any of you remember when Jessie Jackson embarassed the black race when he tried running for president on only the uneducated black vote. He made his entire platform about making life easier on blacks, but also made it clear it was going to be at the expense of whites. As long as uneducated people are voting, politicians will pander to whatever demographic they are speaking to.

The race thing doesn't even phase me anymore because I've accepted a pretty lofty level of stupidity for the people who tend to hold public office. What pisses me off, however, is the Christian arrogance of this woman. If you're going to prejudge me because I'm white, go for it. Doesn't really matter to me. But when you talk down to me because you're Christian and I'm atheist, you're insulting my intelligence. And I'm not cool with that at all.

our race and rights, you would call us racists.
