The Commission on Human Relations says in its Wednesday ruling that the signs at Geno's Steaks do not violate the city's Fair Practices Ordinance.

Joe Vento posted the signs at his shop in October 2005. They read "This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH.' "

Critics allege the policy discourages customers of certain backgrounds from eating there. They say the signs discourage non-English speakers from going to the shop.

Vento says he has never refused service to anyone because they couldn't speak English.

It's his business and he's not discriminating or completley denying anyone service, therefore he has a right to put up any signs he wants to. honestly i don't see anything wrong even if he put a sign up saying he won't serve people who don't speak english. i guess many of you don't get of the country much, but this is common all over the world. if you don't make an attempt (even if you are butchering someones language) you may not get service.

it's hard for older first gen immigrants to learn english, (and they'll never correct their "funny" accents) especially if they work in an ethnic place (ethnic restaurant, grocery store, etc) all day to support their kids. so my only problem with anything like this is that how do you define the line between attempting to speak english (and being grammatically and phonetically hard to understand) and not speaking english at all?

as far as making english official, it depends on what "official" means. It could mean alot of things on a business, government, or private level. Hopefully it'll make immigrants WANT to learn english and WANT to integrate into american society, rather than being a means to deny certain groups of people certain things.
