well my brother recently bought a laptop and forgot the login password. it won't even let him boot in safe mode or anything without it. laptop is a dell xps m1530 w/windows vista. he tried booting it with the cd but the cd drive is a slot styled drive and it won't let him put a cd in. any suggestions on how to reset the password or something?

So he forgot his Windows password or his BIOS password? If it's windows I would tell you to reinstall, but if it's BIOS you've got your work set out for you.

i'm not sure what the bios pw is but he forgot the administrator pw for the computer. it won't even let you go to the login screen. as soon as you turn on the computer it says the computer is locked by a pw or something and then you have to enter a pw.

i tried something similar to that, but the drive won't let me put a cd in. it's the slot loadding style, so it has like a thing that blocks the cd. any other ways i can do that without a cd? like an external hd or something?

i don't see how it could not let you put a cd in?

have you tried putting a cd in both with it powered off and with it on at the login screen?

yes it came with a reboot cd. i read you can reset the password without rebooting everything. either way, the cd drive won't let me stick a cd in. when turned off the thing that blocks the cd drive is still there. it doesn't even get to the logon screen. it asks for a password immediately. can't go to the boot or setup menu either.

might be a bios password.
unless it's some goofy vista thing.. i haven't messed with it much.

whats the screen look like

and are you sure there isn't already a cd in it

No its not a bios password, I know what it is, but I cant think for the life of me what its called. The BIOS password is really easy to reset any way, but it only effects your ability to get into the bios. Actually turn it on and get into the bios and change the boot order and you should be ok

any specific instructions? right when i turn it on it has the loading bar thing, and say press f2 for setup and f12 for boot options. you can press either, or nothing at all and it'll still come up to a white screen that says the computer is protected. i'll take pictures if that makes anything more clear. i'm not sure if there is a disk already in there, but that's what it seems like. i pressed the eject button and nothing comes out. is there a manual way to eject a disk?

Try Dell as the PW, see if that lets you in.

tried it already. doesn't work. i read about jumping something with on the memory or something? anybody know any specific directions on how to do that?

If it was bought in the last year, Dell will fix it for free. Just call them.

i'll give that a shot if all else fails. i need this fixed asap and dell would probably take a while to fix it.

Its the HardDrive password... Dell has it as a option for business series lappies... the only way to go around that is, change out the HDD with a another one and reinstall windows... I had that Problem at work when someone bought a old Dell laptop that was sold off lease from a company... I know its that for sure... Or you can take out the one you got in it and reformat it thru another computer and then reinstall windows...

There are two different passwords that can be set in the bios. 1. Standard Cmos password which can be reset by a jumper or removing the cmos battery. 2. Administrator password, and as far as I know, no way to crack that one. Not too sure what kind of restrictions that Vista has placed on the Cmos though (if any, shouldnt be.) Try taking the battery out and letting it sit for about 10 - 15 minutes before putting it back in...

The sure-fire way to get rid of the BIOS pw is to yank out the battery on the motherboard; but that's kinda not an option on a laptop.

i tried switching out the hd into my other laptop and it worked fine, so would that be the bios pw?

dell use a eprom chip to store the bios password on you probaly wanna call them and just give them the service tag id and they'll give you a password to reset the bios other then that you'll have to replace another eprom from the same laptop that doesnt have the bios pass on it.i would recomend call dell first they usually do those for free anyway so you dont really waste anything but time:goodjob:
