88 transmision on a 95 z6 big problems HELP PLEASE

Hey I need some advice I also posted this in the general tech fourms.


Well I have a 90 crx and I swapped a 95 z6 into it and used my 90 transmission.

Blew the trans last week. I drove 80miles and picked up a transmission today.

I got home and started to prep it for the reinstall.
I stopped and looked at the 90 trans and found that the new trans was different.

its a 88 21 spline and I have a brand new 90 20 spline clutch and lightweight flywheel.

Can I just buy a 88 pressure plate and clutch disk and use my 90 flywheel?

or do I just need to buy a hole 88 setup clutch pressure plate and flywheel?


Please Help I really need this car running ASAP thanks

The flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate need to all be 88. Fortunately you can find decent combo deals on ebay. ok with some resurch I found that I can use the 86-89 2.0L accord clutch disk with my 90 flywheel and pressure plate. Its 212MM(90 clutch is the same) and 21 spline(88 transmission is the same).

Go to pullapart in Norcross. Has tons of 3gen Accords. If, I still had it I would have sold ya the one on my parts car...but its been gone for a long time.

What I need is a
8 3/8" disc. diam.
7/8" spline diam.
21 spline

The 86-89 clutch disks are
8 1/4" disc diam.
7/8" spline diam.
21 spline

1/8" smaller plus its $42.86:D

They are, but HF axles aren't the same as Dx/Si axles. (HF has smaller hubs)

I've tested this trans and confermed it to be a si so in a week I should have it going again then I can find some more problems to fix.:doh:

I ran a 1986-1987 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si clutch disc with a 1990 Civic pressure plate and flywheel in my 1991 EF with built D16A6 engine and it worked 100% perfectly. My transmission was a ZC/Si hybrid with the mainshaft, countershaft, and 1-4 gars coming from an 88 style DOHC ZC transmission, so it had the smaller mainshaft spline count. I did not want to use the smaller 88 style clutch/flywheel so I did the old hybrid clutch set-up.

I'm assuming the 86-89 Accord disc is the same too, but I can tell you 100% that the 86-87 Prelude disc worked perfectly for 3-4 years before I recently sold the car.

Also year model itself won't make the difference on axles. What the main difference is is that the CR-X HF and Civic STD (4-speed model) have smaller outer axle spline counts and different hubs than all other DX, LX, Si, and EX model axles.

You can still use HF or STD axles with an Si/DX tranny because all the 88-91 inner joints are the same for Civic/CR-X - the problems begin when you try to go ZC or B series tranny/engine. That's when you must upgrade spindles to DX/LX/EX/Si to accomodate B or ZC axles.
