I have a 1992 honda civic dx. My valves are chattering an when im driving my car boggs down an then smoke pours out my exhaust. It burns up a lot of oil. When i did a oil change it was black whithin a week. Not sure what the problem is. Some ppl told me its probably my valve seats. Any help?

sounds like your valve seals could be leaking, if your car sits over night then you start it in the morning does it smoke real bad for a while? just smoke real bad all the time? smoke most on acceleration?

it really just smokes when i accelarate. like goin down the road it boggs down an then smoke comes out when i press the gas harder. it only smokes when i accelarate. a guy told me my valves might just need to b adjusted. the car has 188,000 miles on it an im sure its never had a valve job on it at all. cause my valves are ticking but not real bad

there easy to check if they just need adjusted or anything like that if you have any sort of mechanical ability. if you have a depth gauge (bunch of metal flaps all different sizes) goto http://www.hondahookup.com/manuals/ join and download the manual for your car. find the correct depth for your valves in there, then check them, all you have to do to check them is take the valve cover off, just make sure your engine is cold, if not it will be inaccurate. and youll adjust it to the wrong depth. if they are not off by ALOT then thats probably not the reason is smoked when you accelerate. and since alot of people do it dont over tighten the valve cover when you put it back on. those bolts break easy.....haha ofcourse im not speaking from experience, ide neverrrrr do that

you more than likely need piston rings. valves being out of adjustment cant really cause an oil consumption condition, and typically valve stem seals cause a smoking on startup and very little during acceleration

it really only smokes when i get on it. i have great compression. there is just too much oil being dumped into it.

Rings can still smoke even when you have great compression

Yea man, seems to me like your going to have to replace those rings and as far as the bogging goes, are you throwing a CEL?

sounds more like a ring problem...
but you say your valves are clattering when you drive?..

yea im bout to put a b16 swap in it as soon as i get the cash. the only problem is that its a SOHC vtech. tryin to find a dual but cant find the right price for one. the one i found is only like $400 an has about 96k on it

$400 for what? a b16 swap or another sohv vtec swap? i sold my everything you need 100% d16z6 swap for under 400, and it had less than 75,000 miles. haha i remember that, guy had trouble putting it in and tried to tell me he was a bad motor. then i explained to me what happen and i told him what to do and it ended up working, even after a shop told him it was fuked and locked up.

get a feeler gauge and adjust your valves. and black smoke is a sign of running rich.(too much gas) not just straight oil.
