TOKYO — Sony suffered a net loss of $390.5 million (¥37.1 billion) in the first quarter, the electronics and entertainment giant said Thursday, maintaining its forecast for a second straight year of red ink as the global economic slump continued to weigh on its bottom line.

The loss, equivalent to $391 million, comes as Sony and other Japanese exporters have been battered by declining sales, with consumers cutting back on TVs and other personal technology. A strong yen, which erodes overseas revenue and inflates production costs at home, has also hurt the Tokyo-based company.

In the three months ending in June, Sony’s sales dipped 19.2 percent compared to a year earlier, to ¥1.60 trillion. The fall contributed to an operating loss of ¥25.7 billion for the quarter, compared to a profit of ¥73.4 billion in the same period last year.

Sales in its mainstay consumer technology business, which includes its Bravia LCD televisions, Cyber-shot digital cameras, Handycam video recorders and Walkman music players, fell 27.3 percent year-on-year, to ¥773.4 billion yen.

Sony has lost money on TVs for five straight years, trailing Samsung Electronics of South Korea, which dominates major markets with leaner production and more aggressive pricing.

Sony said its video game and computer sales slumped 37.4 percent year-on-year to ¥246.8 billion, due to lower game console and VAIO PC sales. In its gaming business, sales of the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 game consoles were particularly sluggish, and software sales decreased. The company said it sold about 1.1 million PlayStation 3s and 1.3 million PlayStation Portables in the first quarter, compared to 1.6 million and 3.7 million, respectively, in the same period last year.

Sony’s motion pictures segment, however, booked a 6.5 percent increase in quarterly sales, buoyed by the success of its movie “Angels & Demons.”

The strong yen continued to be a key concern. Sony said the currency’s appreciation cost it about ¥68 billion in operating profit compared to the same quarter a year earlier. A ¥17.3 billion loss related to its struggling cellphone venture, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, also hurt Sony’s profit for the quarter.

The latest results suggest that Sony’s president and chief executive, Howard Stringer, still has a long way to go in his quest to turn the company around. In March, Mr. Stringer, a Welsh-born American, announced a management reshuffle designed to speed up the decision-making process at the company and encourage hardware and software engineers to work together.

Mr. Stringer has also said Sony would eliminate 16,000 jobs and pare down its network of 57 factories in an aggressive cost-cutting campaign.
