Dollar Rises as Russia Sees No Alternative to U.S. Currency

June 15 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar rose the most in a week against the euro after Russia’s Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said the nation has full confidence in the U.S. currency.

The greenback advanced against 14 of its 16 major counterparts as Kudrin said in an interview after meeting officials from the Group of Eight nations two days ago that it was too early to speak of an alternative to the world’s main reserve currency. The dollar dropped versus the yen as manufacturing in the New York region decreased this month at an accelerated pace and international holdings of long-term financial assets rose in April at a slower rate.

“The dollar is still the global reserve currency and most likely to remain the reserve currency for the foreseeable future,” said Vassili Serebriakov, a currency strategist at Wells Fargo & Co. in New York. “Certainly there’s no basis for seeing a major shift away from the dollar by global central banks.”

The widely expected move sets the stage for EMC, the top maker of corporate data storage equipment, to raise its $30-per-share cash offer for Data Domain in a rare bidding war. EMC and NetApp are fighting to buy faster-growing Data Domain as the weak economy batters sales at both companies.

Data Domain's board said on Monday that it had been unable to engage in discussions with EMC because the company had not agreed to enter into standstill or confidentiality agreements as required by the merger deal it signed with NetApp last month.

The board added that it believed a deal with NetApp was more certain to close than EMC's offer.

If Data Domain were to break its agreement with NetApp, it would incur "considerable transaction expenses," and under most scenarios be required to pay NetApp a $57 million termination fee, Data Domain's board said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Data Domain shares fell 1.5 percent to $33.00 in trading on the Nasdaq, suggesting investors are expecting EMC to raise its offer.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New U.S. housing starts and permits rebounded in May from record lows as ground-breaking for multifamily units surged after tumbling the prior month, a government report showed on Tuesday.

The Commerce Department said housing starts jumped 17.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 532,000 units, from April's revised 454,000 units. Ground-breaking for multifamily units surged 61.7 percent. Multifamily unit starts fell 49.4 percent in April.

Compared to the same period last year, housing starts dived 45.2 percent.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected an annual rate of 490,000 units for May.

New building permits, which give a sense of future home construction, rose 4.0 percent, the biggest advance since June last year, to 518,000 units in May. That compared to analysts' forecasts for 500,000 units. Compared to the same period a year-ago, building permits plummeted 47 percent.

Moscow has said the rouble and the yuan could become global reserve units in the future, and also suggested the creating of a supranational reserve currency, possibly based on the International Monetary Fund's Special Drawing Rights.

Just after Facebook blows by MySpace to take over the number one spot in the social networking world, MySpace announces it is laying off 30 percent of its workforce. That's 420 workers being cut.

It seems Facebook's handwriting is all over MySpace's wall. MySpace has time to re-cast the site, hold its audience and possibly grow. It's difficult, though, to get in the way of momentum.

That's exactly what MySpace is trying to do since hiring former Facebook COO Owen Van Natta as its new CEO in April, replacing co-founder Chris DeWolfe as CEO. DailyFinance received a copy of the memo Van Natta sent to his MySpace employees asking for their "patience" with MySpace's workforce cuts.

A secret NSA surveillance database containing millions of intercepted foreign and domestic e-mails includes the personal correspondence of former President Bill Clinton, according to the New York Times.

An NSA intelligence analyst was apparently investigated after accessing Clinton’s personal correspondence in the database, the paper reports, though it didn’t say how many of Clinton’s e-mails were captured or when the interception occurred.

The database, codenamed Pinwale, allows NSA analysts to search through and read large volumes of e-mail messages, including correspondence to and from Americans. Pinwale is likely the end point for data sucked from internet backbones into NSA-run surveillance rooms at AT&T facilities around the country.

Stocks in New York were mixed headed into midday Thursday as Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner testified on the proposed historic financial overhaul and the latest data offered a mostly improved view of the state of the U.S economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 75 points at 8572, while the S&P 500 was higher by 8 points at 919. The Nasdaq lost 1 point to 1807.

Alcoa(AA Quote), Bank of America(BAC Quote) and Kraft(KFT Quote) were the biggest gainers on the Dow, while Microsoft(MSFT Quote), General Electric(GE Quote) and Caterpillar(CAT Quote) were the worst.

Technology stocks were slightly underperforming ahead of Research in Motion's(RIMM Quote) quarterly results. Among them, chipmakers Advanced MicroDevices(AMD Quote) and National Semiconductor(NSM Quote) fell 3.4% and 1.8%, respectively.
