my wife doesnt have a good credit score and its a pain in the ass. i was reading up on the net about paying off collections and what not to help get her score up. i seen something about doing PFD and i wanted to see if i could get any more info and how much that will help her score. not posting this to hear some smartass comment, im looking for an actual useful bit of advice......

she has a good bit of bad on her report

-repo, im not worried about that it can stay for all i care. its not going to get paid

-collection agency from t-mobile, its a payable amount so i want to pay this off but i also want to be sure on how to get the PFD letter.

-college loans, she has a loan on her report its split into 2 parts for some reason, they total out to probably 3-5k i dont think they are collection agencies but i want to know if i should just start making payments or arrange something with the loan people. hopefully my work can do something with my MGIB because i heard the military will now covers spouses along with me under my mgib (it pays for 100% of my school). and a while back we had a girl that already payed for school but use the mgib to pay for it somehow. so hopefully i can do that for her and make my life easier.

i cant remember anything else im going to pull up our reports sometime this month to see where they are at. i think there is one more bad thing on it. we also have a credit card that i use but it shows up on both of our reports, will this help her any? or is that considering as her piggybacking me?

How old are the debts? This is important..

both are probably 1 to 2 years atleast, no where near falling off her credit but kinda far off to making it look recent by just going and paying it and them updating it

I'd say consolidate the college loans through the department of education (My payments went from $400 a month to $85 a month) Pay off tmobile but get it ALL in writing. (A good letter can be found on the Clark Howard forums (www.clarkhoward.com)

Repo, lets just say I had a voluntary repo at 19 and it didnt really effect anything after 2 or 3 years.. i had the same mentality you had although I had returned the car to the stealership.

Nah you write it to collections, sorry I've been away from the site for a good day or so. Send it certified mail too and make you you receive a response before you send payment

ill probably print out one of the many i can find on the net. can it be from me or will it have to be from my wife since its her debt? i set up with a online account with her school loans website to start paying them. only one loan is behind (today its 81 days late, about to hit the 90 day mark which i want to try to avoid) the others are considered on a grace period still. kinda annoyed though one part of site shows 3 loans, totaling to 5k or so.
then this other part of the sites shows all those loans but the first 2 have a thing where one is a sub and the other is a unsub. i asked them about it and they said one is just one she has to pay principal on, but its showing it likes its a completely different loan, and showing it as she owes about 8.5k on another part of the site.

On the student loans, that's because technically they are two separate loans. The subsidized loan is going to be something along the lines of a Stafford or other federally assisted loan, while the other was made by the company to pay the remainder of her tuition NOT covered by the subsidized loan. Make sense?

so either way she has to pay them all? (totaling to the 8.5K+) and not the 5k she thought she was paying?.....thats gay, im going to have to find another way to get this stuff payed for. i hope my education office on base can find some way to get this money out of my GI bill to cover her schooling, or something. if not ill just get an automatic payment plan set up to come out of my check and just let it ride out a few years so she can get a background of payments actually BEING made ONTIME.....haha

well, student loans can be tricky. If she completed the period the loans were for, then whatever the total amount is, Is what's owed. However if she didn't, the remainder may have been refunded to the
financial institution IF she didn't personally receive the refund directly from the school. Best bet is to call again and try
and get the total amount due.

That's the reason, as you seem to know, to avoid having to deal with them. They call here all the time for my dad's estate, trying to collect a $35.19 debt from 15 years ago. I refuse to pay it, seeing as how the people with whom he had the account charged it off years ago. He never did any business with Cockhole, Jizztrap and Associates.

[/related rant] Any headway on the student loans?

what you mean headway on the student loans? i found out that the reason there is 2 extra loans showing up its she had grants to pay the rest frmo the government, but since she hasnt been paying her own loans the government put the rest on her. as soon as i start paying her loans again the govt will go back and pay the 2 it added. as for the tmobile collection i called that number that was for the "president" of the CA, i ended up talking to some lady she was cool, she forwarded me to the right person and he didnt act like a ass and seemed to have some sort of knowledge of what a PFD letter was.

ok well i sent the PFD letter sometime shortly after the post before this and still havent heard anything. how long should i wait for a response? figured they would take it. i agreed to pay the full balance of around 480, instead of the settlement amount of like 280, as long as they agreed with the terms that were listed on the PFD i used. basically get it off her credit....
