I have a '96 GSR. I asked a question about my RPMs at different speeds on another forum and didn't like the answers I got, so I wanted to see what you guys thought. Are these RPMs and Speeds right for a GSR Tranny?

In 5th gear on the interstate I'm getting:
2700RPM @ 60MPH
3100RPM @ 70MPH
3500RPM @ 80MPH
4000RPM @ 90MPH
4500RPM @ 100MPH

I have to admit though, this dude has been on the up and up with me about everything. I'm sure if he'd known it was an ls tranny he would have told me. Anyway, I'll get better highway MPG that way. We've been getting an average of about 27MPG in it, and I personally don't drive slow.

what size tires are you running. with 195/55/15's on my civic and running a gsr trans i thought i remember being around 4k-4250 rpms at 80 mph in 5th. ls and gsr trans were labled s80 so thats something to look out for

yea thats how my GSR was too, I was at 4K at 80MPH, sounds like u got an LS tranny or some really tall tires.......

195/60R15... 195 is factory tire width...60 is slightly taller than factory, but the difference between a 55 and a 60 wall height is only 1/3" or so if I'm not mistaken. That shouldn't be enough to make a big impact on the RPMs that I'm running.

If you are going 60 MPH at 3500 in 4th then you got a LS trans buddy. I have a GSR trans with a LS 5th in it and get the same 5th gear numbers as you.

Yeah, it hits 3500 in 4th. I do get pretty good gas mileage out of the LS tranny though. I have a heavy foot, and I'm still currently getting about 27mpg. I think that might actually be better than what my sunfire gets (the most fuel efficient vehicle in my driveway until now). Don't think it's much cheaper with having to run premium, though ;)

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I checked the tag on the tranny and it is a Y80... obviously not an LS tranny! Just had to make that known for everyone who thought it was an LS tranny.

Is there a chance that the 5th gear could have been swapped for a LS 5th gear?

Here's a chart:
http://www.bergeguy.com/gear-ratios.html

Here's a calculator:
http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears

Looks like maybe 62mph at 3k in 5th with the tires you are running.
