compressing springs

i need help on how to compress my springs onto struts myself..

like 10$ spring compressors at advance, or they might let you borrow some. not something to be trying to do by yourself in your garage if you dont know how though, it could pop and take your jaw off

go to autozone, autoadvance, or Pepboys and rent a spring compressor or just keep the tool (comes in handy in future...) Once done using it, return back to Autozone, get full refund back...

If you need instructions here ya go: ( If you already past steps 1-5, proceed on to 6-10)

1. First and foremost, loosen up the lug nuts on all wheels. Then jack/lift the front car and insert jackstands under the passenger/driver sides (there should be jacking points)

2. Repeat step 1 for the rear as well. Once the car is above ground level, always double check that the car is secured before further proceedures. Do front shocks first then work you way to the rear. Release lugs and wheel.

3. Take anything holding on the strut/shock (i.e.: the brake line). Take the all bolts holding the fork to the shock and controll arm off. Study the diagram:

4. The the shock should now only be holding onto the top of the wheel housing.

5. Release the two bolts holding the shock and remove shock.

6. The tool should look somewhat like this:

7. Once spring is out, apply the tool by spreading the two claws like this:

and take the locking nut off like this:

8. Install new springs in and reverse the steps in putting the shock back in the car. Heres diagram of suspension:

9. Might need alignment.

u might think this is dumb, but i have done it a few times.


you need two people for this, bolt the top strut plate up, place the spring and strut into wheel well, place a jack under the lca, and bolt the lower strut to the lca, dont tighten it though, then jack the strut up till you can start the top bolt, you do need someone pushing down on the fenders, but it works, done it a few times and worked great.

but just rent a compressor at a local parts store.

Make sure u get the ones that lock, or have locks that clamp the compressor and spring to each other, that way if it do pop you wont get hurt

thanks passed that stage and now i ran into another one.....
the bolt at the top of the strut has been stripped and cannot come off.....
so now i dont know what to do.....

uhh.... youre fuked... i got into this problem with jeep shocks before, but luckily i was replacing the shocks... i tore the **** out of it to get the nut off, so i'm probably not the best person to answer this question.

how the hell you strip the threads on the top of shocks???? Did you compress the springs enough where it wasn't applying pressure on the Damper mounting base? If you didn't, this might of caused you to strip the thread/bolt. Only way now is to, compress springs (properly), and tell a buddy to help hold the shock. Then, take the bolt off; if u plan on keeping the same shocks, buy a rethread bolt die (correct fitment)and rethread the threads on shock:

Make sure you get the right fitment, then twist onto the stripped threads and it should rethread like new. might need new bolt (correct fitment as well)

dont forgot to hold the strut rod with a pair of vice grips or else it will just spin and blow out the seal on the strut

point the top bolts to your face and take out all the bolts you see and watch real close as it comes off haha....
