The Death Of Freaknik And The Rise Of Black Spring Break Events

Black Spring Break Events evolve from the unorganized Freaknik traffic gridlock Atlanta. during the 90s. Black Spring Break Events bring 100,000 participants to Daytona Beach, Florida, Galveston, Texas and Miami, Florida.

(PRWEB) April 6, 2005 -- For many years, especially during the late 80's and early 90's, the Freaknik In Atlanta, Georgia brought in over 250,000 participants.

It created enormous traffic gridlock and was considered the hot zone for hundreds of thousands of black college students who traveled from all across the country every April to Atlanta, Georgia.

Black College Reunion in Daytona Beach, Florida, April 15-17, 2005, The Kappa Beach Party in Galveston Texas( April 15 -17, 2005) and newest spring break event The Miami Springfest hosted by P.Diddy in Miami, Florida(April 29- May 2, 2005) are all scheduled to take place this month. And each will bring in over 100,000 college students per event.

Terrance Smith, CEO of http://www.blackbeachweek.com a website and newsletter which focuses on African American Spring Break events, explains that spring break events such as those named remain extremely popular because they a fill a cultural void that many of the traditional spring break events leave out.

Smith also goes on to explain that "unlike the Freaknik event in Atlanta, spring break events of today offer a variety of things to do such as concerts, car shows, job searches and career development recruitment. They are also being backed by sponsors which was unheard of in the past”. Smith predicts that spring break events will continue to grow and expand in different cities in future years.

DBPevents, I am white. I don't need to read a press release about Freaknik, I was at Freaknik for years. I was hitting switches in my Impala then, still have it now. I have videos and pics showing me personally there, I have friends that were at BBQs there with me. Where were you?
I can say without a doubt that traffic did play into it, but the problem drew the most attention when gangs of guys when roaming around Five Points assaulting women at random. You cannot have that played on the nightly news. There were quite a few incidents of violence and robbery that were directly associtated with those in Freaknik.

Crime is committed in Atlanta all the time, it didn't just "rise" when Freaknik came in town. If anything, tourists spent tens of millions of dollars in Atlanta for that week/weekend.

I am not saying there were not unruly parts or issues, like traffic for instance for residents. It wasn't just a weekend of "fock the law" as some paint.

"We don't want riots. All we are asking for is for proportional sentencing."

The jailed youths were among around 290 people arrested after what has been considered among the worst disturbances ever seen on mainland Britain in recent years.

The families warn the men will leave prison embittered by the experience, exacerbating already strained relations in Bradford.

Crime is committed in Atlanta all the time, it didn't just "rise" when Freaknik came in town. If anything, tourists spent tens of millions of dollars in Atlanta for that week/weekend.

I did, in its "hey day" from "93-97".. I have pics of me PARKED on I-20 and on the downtown connector taking pics.

It was RIDICULOUS and I am glad to have experienced it. Estimates said 200,000 but I say at least 500,000 the best years.

Considering how many people came, it was a DAMN GOOD TIME.

The judge who passed "severe" jail terms on young Asian rioters failed to take account of the origins of disturbance, the Court of Appeal has heard.

as a side note, I'm not trying to please the world with FreakNik. Certainly there will be events that each individual will support or not support. Some people will come and have a great time and others will be bytch slapped at the door for all the online tough guy shyt. Either way, for your market, I think it would be more constructive to suggest new and exciting ideas instead of debating events that are out of ones control. Regardless of personal opinions others may have, it is a fact that I ran the streets for years.
