No poll because there are so many......just post'em up.

Heh, judging by the lack of responses, I'm likely one of the very few here who did go greek. The other possibility is that frats have such a stigma now that people who are greek might not be willing to admit it.
I pledged Beta Theta Pi at Southern Methodist University. I transferred to UGA and affiliated with the chapter there. I was active at first, then slowly faded. I wasn't very happy with the direction that my chapter was taking but couldn't do much about it, and I moved back into my parents house during the last couple of years I was at UGA.
Are you in school now, and thinking about pledging?

thats why you make friends with frat tards and USE them :D no money lost, lots of beer drank, lots of ho's found... and no loss :goodjob:
i did the same thing all the time that my buddies in frats did without spending an arse load of money!

The only thing you're paying for is the food (2-3 meals a day), the trips, and possibly rent. All of which are cheaper than what you would pay on your own.

I'm not really being 'pushed' to join per say, but I actually having some difficulty getting in touch with the members. I mean....I only know 1 by face, and the others don't always wear the colors. They hate to be facebook'd so I'm attending a **** ton of GSU events just so I have the chance of finding one of them. Its so frustrating, hopefully I'm not too late in the semester this semester, and hopefully I run into on today or something. Jeez....I've been by their room/board or whatever multiple times and noone's ever around.

Beta's at tech tend to be douche bags though, most arrogant people I've ever been around.

Pledged Fiji (Phi Gamma Delta) at Tech. Due to a few external reasons, it didn't work out. I left on good terms though and most of my best friends at Tech are Fijis. Most people outside of the fraternity think that I am one.

No, Sigma Chi here is much different than at Tech. I went to a party there during my Christmas break and it was... interesting. I can safely say that I would not have pledged there if I had gone to Tech. Up here we're not too big, only about 30-35 brothers since we're a small school, from all over. Many from California, Colorado, Texas, some from the northeast, and myself from Georgia.
I also visited UGA and USC while I was home and I can say that the southern fraternity scene is an entirely different animal than the northern. We don't dress like fratstars and all that.
My good buddy joined Fiji at Tech and he's having a great time with them...

You live in Anderson?
I'm in Spartanburg for a few months for work....
No, I actually live in Central. Clemson, Central, Pendleton and Anderson are all pretty close together. Spartanburg is about 35-ish miles north of me.
One of the biggest things I've heard in this thread, and irl, is that "I don't pay for my friends". Make no mistake about it, I don't, nor did I when I was involved with Beta, pay for any of the friends I made. In fact, a year or so before I graduated from UGA I started making the distinction between my friends who were brothers and the people that were brothers. Not all of the 70 some odd people that walked through the Beta house's doors were my friends.
If anyone is willing to pay the dues to become a member of any nationally recognized organization, then that person is doing basically the same thing as joining a fraternity. Sure, most organizations don't require applicants to learn the history of the organization and what not, but the two acts (joining a frat or, say, becoming a SCCA member) are essentially the same. The individual is paying dues to a central organization for the "exclusive" right to gain some benefit from that organization.
In the case of social fraternities, one should theoretically be joining an organization where there is some common bond. I pledged Beta at SMU and affiliated at UGA because the guys in the house were all different in many ways but still socialized and had a good time. The character of each house is different, and that's why there are so many of them.

Interesting thread......
If you join a Frat/Sorority to make friends, step/stroll, or become popular......Hang yourself.
D-Ninja: You should find one of the Q's, pull them to the side, and let them know of your interest. Be yourself and be honest. And please do not refer to any of the above reasons as which to join. Also, very important, due your research on the frat. Founders, purpose, year created, etc...
NPHC organizations are much harder to gain acceptance, stay focused.

Beta Theta Pi at Tech. Still active and live in the house. Brother was a Sigma Chi at Tech, my grandfather was Delta Tau Delta at Tech, and my dad was Delta Sigma Phi at Wofford. Fraternities are mainly a southern thing. I actually joined with a couple of my best friends from high school. Oh and I save about $1500 a semester by being greek and living in the house as compared to paying for GT housing and food. Biggest gain of joining a house if connections more than anything. I've had a few very nice job offers from alumni above avg. pay etc. and never even interviewed. Also overall greeks at Tech have a higher GPA. Our house avg is actually above a 3.0.
Really greek or not depends on the school. Tech doesn't have much social stuff outside the greek system because not really a downtown like say Athens or Auburn. Also a lot of the girls at Tech are greek and of course that means they mainly go to fraternity houses to hang out. So another advantage to being greek at Tech. Not sure I'd be greek anywhere else but I am very glad that I am at Tech.
Oh and I can't remember who said Beta's are arrogant (true of some but same with every house) but actually we are one of the few houses that has mainly open parties and lets anyone in whether you know someone or not.
