MotorTrend's Scott Kanemura sat down with Michizio Niikura, the president of MINE'S Motor Sports, the first aftermarket firm to get its hands on the new Nissan GT-R. The conversation centered on the roadblocks Nissan has put in place to stimy high speeds and limit modifications to the GT-R.
We've previously reported on how the GPS system fitted to the GT-R would remove the 111 mph (180 kph) speed limiter when the car arrives at a track, but according to Niikura, it will only work on pre-approved racetracks. However, the GPS sensor doesn't automatically remove the limiter by itself, it has to be manually changed by navigating through a series of menus on the GT-R's touch screen. While having to go to a Nissan-approved track is daft in its own right, it's even worse when you leave. After the track day, owners are required to head on over to a Nissan High Performance Center where a $1000 safety check is performed. Don't do it and the factory warranty is void.
Another rumor that began circulating after the Tokyo Auto Salon has also been confirmed: aftermarket wheels are out. Supposedly, all the GT-Rs on display at TAS had to be driven in on the stock rollers, jacked up and then fitted with the tuner's chosen wheels. Due to a sensor mounted on the valve stem, if the GT-R is driven with aftermarket rims, an error code is thrown on the dash. And although MINE'S has fitted a custom exhaust to their shop car, they've found that any modification to the intake system causes the ECU to go haywire.
While all these findings are disturbing draconian GT-R owners here in the U.S. won't have to worry about the speed limiter/track day issue. Nissan has said that the GPS system won't be implemented here in the States, but the future of tuning the GT-R remains questionable.

I'm not sure why they bothered to put so many roadblocks in place for tuners. What do they have to lose? They sell the car, they make their profit, people tune them and turn others onto the performance potential of the GT-R. More people buy it.

Nissan might be screwing themselves on this car. Yeah it performs stock, but that doesn't matter when you can tune a soon to be zr-1 or something else along those lines.

Well Nissan would make more money if there is no after market support, when things break (assuming out of warranty) the owner would have to go to a dealership and pay an exorbitant amount of money to get them fixed.
I'm sure there is a better reason though, or else all manufacturers would be doing this.

I honestly think it would hurt sales more than anything. I know people are going to buy it, but if I had 80k-120k to spend on a car and I LOVED the GTR I probably still wouldn't buy it.

No rims or intake upgrades or else you get a CEL light? Wow, what happens if you try to upgrade the turbos? Self-destruct sequence activation?

I don't understand why Nissan is doing any of this...
so they wont have a garage full of beaten up Gtr's sittin in all their dealerships. With broken parts, from being abused all day. I dont see the real issue, i mean its not like all these companies that build these cars, take them to the dealership to get them repaired anyway. With time, there will be management systems, taht will override all that BS in the car. And it will not even be a issue. Alot of new performance cars otu now, have alot of ecu restrictions.
For the common buyer.. i dont really see a point of the whel thingies. But in the future, we might even see wheels especially designed for the gtr only.

if the rims have a certain valve stem then switch that sh!t out into the new rims it's not that hard and for the track bs just street race....lol!!!!
the gtr is not really going to be big anyway its going to be a lawyers weekend car and a shops project and a shop doesn't need any warranty so everybody will be fine.....
