View Full Version : Something to make you think before bitching about our country

How good it is when someone who makes us laugh will also make us reflect on the positive !

Hope you will all read to the end. Jay Leno puts it into perspective
and makes us think about the pathetic negativity.

That's right, Jay Leno wrote this!!

Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some
poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true, given the
source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy
with the direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the
country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence,
2/3's of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What are we
so unhappy about?''
Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7
days a week?

Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer
and heating in the winter?

Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time, and
see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the
Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we
move through each state?

Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along
the way that can provide temporary shelter?

I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from
around the world is just not good enough.

Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up
and
Provide services to help all, and even send a helicopter to take you
to the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You
may be upset with k nowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a
group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch
equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and
your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a
burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a
bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against
attack or loss.

This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias
raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of
teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we
enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the
world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a
great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most
blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we
don't have , and what we hate about the country instead of thanking
the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the President who took us into war and has
no plan to get us out? The President who has a measly 31 percent
approval rating? Is this the same President who guided the nation in
the dark days after 9/11? The President that cut taxes to bring an
economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been
called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the
spoiled un grateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?

The Commander-In Chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there
defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the
news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so
unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the
good things and be glad?

Think about it...are you upset at the President because he actually
caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was
failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your
freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have
to go.

They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general''
discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case
scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of
Americans? Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it
bleeds, it leads; and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will
watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids
selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets
are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells , and when
criticized, try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one
way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J.
Simpson to write a book about "how he didn't kill his wife, but if he
did he would have done it this way"...Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off
the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of
your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a
country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

We are among the most blessed people on Earth, and should thank God
several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides,
flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to
another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are
we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of
Allegiance?"

I am one of the few who likes Bush on here so I know most people will bash what he has to say, but I feel the media brain washes so much of what goes on and warps it to be news that sells and ignores the good things, etc.

why does it always have to be a class thing. There are people in all classes that like Bush. People blame him for everything but why is that? A lot of it isn't independent research done by the citizens of this country because we as a country are fat lazy slobs so the only place most people get their research is the Media. Look at our current Presidential Election. The media gives most of its coverage to the front runners(Obama, Hillary, McCain, Romney) and the rest get mentioned from time to time and yet they never seem to actually show what the canidates are. Democrats and Republicans are both parading around using the same word....Change. Yet I have yet to hear how any of them are actually going to do it. Especially Obama. The one thing you hear consistently come out of Hillary's mouth is that she is going to help the middle and lower income families by "taxing the evil rich". Great so we are going to tax the one group in the country that actually pays anything in taxes more so that she can give lower income families cable TV and more money in their pocket when the lower income households don't pay squat for taxes to begin with. And now the kids of those "evil rich" have to pay for it as well by paying the same tax rate as their parents? I mean where does the madness stop? If people really want change they need to stop taking everything they hear on the news to heart and do some independent research of their own to determine which canidate is actually going to bring about this so called change that everyone wants.

because just like you said people in the upper middle class do pay taxes and work for what they have. + off topic of Bush, the tax system needs to change because whenever an individual doesn't want to make more money because of the fear of higher taxes and less income. There's something really wrong!

I was expecting it to have some joke at the end, coming from him. But it is the truth. It's one thing to have a legitimate complaint against Bush or something else about America, but simply complaining for what you don't have? Well said.

1000cckiller
01-23-2008, 03:05 PM
Brett i understand what leno said, but Bush is still full of ****. Yes he got us out of a recession, put he is putting us back into one. Bush is a go getta I will admit that, but he has made some stupid decisions also. All isnt Bushs fault some off his administration, has to take the fall for their own stupid decisions. Bush though has the final say of what goes, so if anything fails it falls on his head. Also our government is to blame for a lot of problems. Why is it that things that happened when you came up, have changed so drasticly.

Think about it
1. When we were younger when we went to school. When everyone got into class and sat down, what was the first thing we did?

2. Why dont parents whip their kids anymore? Why are they trying to be their friends?

3. Why are 10-14yr old kids walking around with cell phones.

4.Why can murderers doing unjustified killings get out in 5-25yrs.

Those are just some things. Its not that people are spoiled, times are changing and we are letting things slip away. Back in the day I remember we a person could leave their house door open, now people are afraid a teenager will come in and rob them. I remember when people didn't mind sharing, but those days are long gone.

I guess I am the only one on here who thinks this is a very poor description of the situation and is blatantly playing on emotion. The opening states:

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy
with the direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the
country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence,
2/3's of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

That last sentence is not a logical conclusion to draw from the first two statements. If you have a million dollars and you lose one dollar then you are most likely "not happy with the direction your money is headed" but that in no way means you "just ain't happy". Likewise with Bush, saying they are unhappy with his performance only means that they think someone else could have done better. It's not the same as saying he is the antichrist who is trying to detroy america.

I believe America is a great country for all those reasons Jay listed. Does that mean I can not want to improve areas which I think could use improvement? Why do people think that being appreciative of what you have means you can't strive for even better? They are not mutually exclusive! America became the country it is today because of the refusal to accept things the way they were. Did our founding fathers, Susan B. Anthony, or Martin Luther King say "We have so much to be thankful for, we really shouldn't be complaining." Hell No! They saw the potential for this country and they fought for those beliefs. If you love your country, you should never stop trying to make it even greater.

For those who dont want to read, here's the summary:
Yes we should be grateful for living in this country.
No we should not turn a blind eye to things we believe are wrong.

No, YOU STFU. I got my ass beat as a kid so I should know first hand. Just because you guys were born 10 or so years earlier than us doesn't mean our parents didn't still have hands and belts (and tempers). All i'm saying is in this day & age, spanking usually doesn't do sh*t, so you gotta mess with the kids' heads instead. Take this for example:

You've just driven an hour and are about to go into the mall to take your kids to a movie and you distinctly tell them not to get out of the car and run through the parking lot... you telll them to wait for you outside the car instead. Well, needless to say the little bastards take off and sprint through the parking lot. If you take them back to the car and beat the sh*t out of them, then go inside to see the movie, they'll think "hmm... all i gotta do is get beat and then i can keep going on with my day? sweet". But if you put them back in the car and drive and hour all the way back home, they'll know to f*cking listen to what dad says next time.

Jay Leno didn't write that, but it's still a good read.

Nice, Lamar. Whoever wrote it, though, although speaking the truth, I don't need to read anyone's essay to know that I see no reason to ***** about this country. There are fucced up events going on here, true, but what country doesn't have fucced up events taking place within it's borders? If people want to truly bring America back to it's roots, then all the black people will go BACK to Africa. All the Hispanic people will go BACK to Mexico. All the Asians will go BACK to their respective countries. And all the white people will go BACK to Europe. That's the only way America will go back to purity. Later, QD.

that is awesome, i watch jay lenno almost every night and wouldnt expect something like that out of him. but now i will watch even more!

brett I am a bush supporter also, and heck yes the media is the source of all the army "pull out" supporters. The problem is that these people that want to pull out and come home don't talk to these soldiers on a daily basis the soldiers that do not like the idea of coming home because then they will all feel like failures

BTW, that still does not change my feelings on what the active troops (lots of my friends) have told me about the situation and them not wanting to come home.

(Straps on flame suit)

You know it is possible to be unhappy with the direction that the country is headed without taking everything you have for granted. It's the fact that you are thankful enough for everything you have that makes you worried about it getting taken away. This isn't really an argument against the the whole Bush part of the debate, but rather the percentage of people that aren't happy with the country's direction. People like to live as they are now, they don't want that quality of living to go down.

agreed! + for you. CRIMINAL immigrant's come here more and more everyday, and they risk their lives to travel to the Estudios Unidos to attempt to persue happyness. And these people that want universal health care (Osama bin Obama/Hitlary) are playing on the poor people in this country that have never seen how long it takes to get a doctors appointment in canada.....or a dentist appointment in great britian.

Just to add on to what I said, I do agree with the majority of the original post. I definitely believe media sucks major balls and is the reason behind a lot of crap we go through. However, I just don't see how people being unhappy about the direction the country is headed (not the present state mind you) is a bad thing.

you make no sense whatsoever with that statement (yes i took out your addition in parenthesis)

so you are saying that people being unhappy with the "direction the country is headed" is a good thing? Do you not realize that capitalism will always prevail? The market will always go through it's up's and down's. (i assume that is what you are talking about when you say the state of this country) but then again i shouldnt assume

I undertsand that 100%. I'm just saying he's using a somewhat irrelevant pole to help his argument. Are you saying you're happy that our economy is going downhill? Are you looking forward to the days of 3 dollars to every Euro? I understand that it will rebound, it doesn't mean I'm happy that it's happening in the first place. All I'm saying is that people can be unhappy with the direction that the US is headed (the possible future) without being unhappy about the country (the present, which were all of the examples he used).

hell yes i am happy that the market is down while i am 21 years old! I am putting lots of money into my roth IRA right now....which means I get to buy into the stock market while it is LOW! So that means i will be a rich man when i get to retirement and the stock market is at all time high's in the year 2048

Oh yeah, and the only other thing that bothers me about this post:

"Under God" wasn't even in the pledge of allegiance until 1954. However, I do agree there are far worse things to worry about then whether or not it should remain in.
