i a working on doing a motor swap for my 99 civic. i am probibly going with a b16 but i was wondering if anyone knows about how much it would cost me to put a K series in. just courious.

well, in short, a crapload
and personally, id go with a b18c over b16 especially if its a daily driver, b16 hardly has any more torque than my d16 does.

much it would cost me to put a K series in. just courious.
Atleast 4500 for just the motor and another shitload for the mounts and labor etc. expect to spend about 6K+
But its well worth it for the BLING factor :D. ummmmm k20a2 w/ITBs sexy

you can find a k20a3 for 1200-1500 and turbocharge it for 3000 and be putting down tons more power!! those things love F/I!!

yea, but how much will it cost to put in a 99 civic DX?
Vteckidd
08-17-2005, 01:49 PM
any REPUTABLE shop will charge you $6000-7000. we just did a K20A3 CIVIC SI swap in an 01 Civic EX automatic, cost him $5500 for labor and parts. in an EK chassis theres alot more work.
man, i dont mean to sound like an ass, but you dont have any idea what you are doing. your making all these threads, Building a D series, K swap, Which motor B series to o with. let me make it simple for you.
EASIEST ROUTE FOR QUICK POWER RANKED FROM BEST TO WORST IMO:
1) GSR SWAP
2) B16A SWAP
3) D SERIES TURBO
4) LS SWAP
5) K 20
now i list the K20 last cause i dont think you have the money for it. itll cost around $6000-7000. Type-S front Clips go for $4000-4500, Labor would be around $1200, Mounts are $500-550, plus youll lose AC and i belive Power Stearing as well.
GSR swap you can get away with a nice low mileage swap and labor for around $3700-4000
B16A2 Swap would run you around $3000-3400 for a swap installed
LS would run you around $2200-2700 for a complete swap installed
D SERIES TURBO would run around $1500-2500 depending on what you went with.
Depending on your motors year and mileage, i would look at a D series Turbo. i have a friend that makes 203whp with a nonvtec D series. its a blast to drive, and if you take care of it it can last a long time. plus if the motor blows up who cares, they are $200.
Next i would look at the tried and True GSR swap. 1.8l, DOHC VTEC, it will be considerably faster than what you have now, and youll be happy, plus its a proven platform to turbo or go all mtoor with.
I would choose a B16 over an LS motor simply because you can rev the motors, and they are great candidates for boost, and they have VTEC duh.
LS motor is nice, cheap and easy B series. However, lots of them have high mileage and are ragged out. Plus you cant revthem like their vtec counterparts, and i would boost, but a boosted LS wont make nearly as much as a Boosted B16 or GSR. look at an LS if your limited on funds.
Now decide what you want, i dont hink you really know what a GSR in an EK chassis feels like. if you have never ridden in one, find someone on the board that can give you a ride, if you never have driven one, youll be surprised at how peppy they are.
again, not trying to be an ass, trying to let you know what you are getting into

turbos arnt cheap man, well, unless u do a junkyard home made setup or something for like a $1000, but u will get more power out of that than doing just a motor swap, but the b series swap will get u more power in the long run
I think it kinda depends on how long u think u will want to work on it and how much money ur wanting to spend on this project.

i wouldnt get it
it looks like some of that ssautochrome stuff which just sucks
plus, thats a very big turbo for a little d series motor, u will have a bunch of lag with a turbo that size so i wouldnt think it would be too much fun for a daily driver
If u want to go turbo, i would suggest just doin a lot of research before u go jumping into it
Just my :2cents:

LOL, its still a 1.6l man.
plus, ill have you rn my friend that makes 203whp Turbo NON VTEC D SERIES and ill see what you have to say about that.
FACT:
203whp D series will beat ANY OF THE OTHER SETUPS I HAVE LISTED. AND ITS THE CHEAPEST
however, that is the max for that motor. do HP/DOLLAR. turbo D series is the best for his budget. best for power HANDS DOWN.

ok, cool, so vteckidd, what do you think of that turbo kit?
Vteckidd
08-18-2005, 09:46 AM
Its junk. its a KNOCKOFF blow off vlave, a knock off wastegate, that rubo is too big for a D series motor, that is an SSAUTOCHROME turbo manifold, they crack like crazy. shitty welds. The intercooler i belive is a Johnny Race Car , which is like a $200 intercooler.
you get what you pay for. my kits come with NAME BRAND stuff
Make sure that you spend your money wisely is all I can tell you. I had no freaking clue what to do when I got my car. I started a thread and got opinions. I was most impressed with what Vteckidd had to say and I felt comfortable w/ the fact the he knew what he was talking about. We mapped out what I wanted to do to achieve my goals. We spent from September 04 until about February 05 just accumulating parts! I couldn't drop 3k right in one shot, plus we kept refining what I wanted to do. I made some sacrifices in order to have a more solid build and a good foundation and the things that I want to add I can do as it goes down the road. I am in no way finished w/ my car. I will be one of the very few B16's in GA, hell in the U.S. for that matter that is making 200 whp all motor before Me and Vteckidd are through. It's all about what you want to accomplish and what you want to do. I started off with a b16 in my car stock, having a 99 si, so I wanted to build that engine all motor. Mike mentioned doing a GSR block w/ my head but I wanted to see how far we could take the little B. So far I am very pleased as I think Mike is as well w/ how my build has turned out so far and w/ the numbers I am making.
Formally...

Everyone here has made some good points. You need to think about what you want to do with the car. What are your ultimate goals. And don't say 500hp either. What do you mostly do with the car. Is it always going to be your daily driver. Do you want to drag race, street race, do mountain runs, etc. Last think about how much money you want to spend.
Chooses for about $3000
1. Turbo you D-Series. The non-vtecs can easily make over 200whp with a quick spoon turbo. The vtecs can make close to 220whp. For the $3000 you can go ahead and get a good exhaust, ecu, tuning, and things like a clutch to hold the power. HOWEVER, you are at the limits of the motor in stock form.
2. B-series swap. This will get you about 150whp with the B16 with I/H/E. It will be hard to get the header and exhaust and the swap for this price. The advantage it that there is more potential for the motor down the road. Also, all motor is sometimes prefered for mountain runs and auto-x.
3. K-series swap. The $3000 will get you a K20 to set in your room and look at until you can get another $3000 to buy the rest of the parts and pay for labor.
Later.
Oh, I forgot my favorite part of all my custom made header back exhaust made by the master, Charles, at Mainstream Performance! lol

Yea vteckidd realy does know what he is talking about. i'm trying to get up with him to set my goals. i'm hoping that he can help me out as much as he has you.
and also, i'm wanting to build my motor for Drag but have a dayly driver also.
Good luck I hope it does well for you. My car will be at Mainstream this weekend getting larger injectors, larger fuel pump, oil catch can, and retune. If you want to check out a built B16 Mike will give you a ride in my car, he knows I won't mind.

IM gonna agree with Vtec and 99si on this one aswell. Like from your other thread, your best bet would be building the d series. .2 displacement isnt what makes the b series so much better. And probably the best point made in any of the threads we have been discussing on was made by mike...If you blow the d-series up who cares? There only like 200 bucks.

i would do a turbo D series or a B16 swap. that wold be my recommendation based on your budget. GSR swap is out of your reach financially, they run another 1000-1700 more than a turbo D series and B16 swap

Ok.... I have seen good points, and I think I can get the power I am looking for out of my d16. BUT..... can I do a B16 swap for the same price of a Turbo kit for my D16? If that is the case would I not be better off going with the B16 because I can keep on building and building on the B16 and get even more power in the long run? BUT AGAIN... I also see the point if I Blow the D16 I can replace it for pretty cheep. Just looking for opinions on that. If I go with the D16 will the stock internals hold a turbo? and if not what should I do to prepare for the turbo. I would like to at least port and polish the head to get some extra power. and also should I put a vtec head on my y7? or is the non-vtec head just as good. I have heard that the y7 motors put down more torque than the y8's. so any comments on that?
IA Has been a lot of help so far on all of my million questions, lol, especially vteckidd. Just like to say thanks for putting up with my BS questions. I'm just trying to do things rite the first time.

id say 8-10 psi would be the max u would want to run w/ stock internals on ur d16 as long as your getting a good tune for it (which if u go to mainstream you will)
Stock internals should be fine for boost as long as you dont get boost happy and up it way too much
vteckidd says hes seen 203 hp out of a non vtec so i dont see the need to put a vtec head on it
And yes, a b16 will be better for the long run, again, it depends how long u think ull stick with this project and how much money you want to spend

yeah the guy is on here too, ScttyDB411 makes 203whp d16 NON VTEC.
i agree with what you. B series is a better platform, but if you dont want 300whp , and you dont want to spend alot of moeny, or dont have a lot of money, its not worth it. just being honest a B series swap and turbo kit with labor is around $6500-7000. thats a A+ turbo kit.
i would do the turbo D series, youll spend less money than a swap, its boosted, and itll be fun. youll enjoy it, and at teh end of the day, turbo kits dont really diminish in value much, if you get more moeny later on you can prob sell evreything for a good price

do no motor work, unless your behind on your regular maintanence. do a timing belt and water pump if you havent dont one yet.
change your oil, flush your radiator.
i would look at upgrading your clutch first if you have an OEM clutch. then i would save up for the turbo kit

for $2000 you can build a nice decent turbo kit.
we do timing belt and water pumps for $300 parts an labor on a D series.
When you are ready to start buying stuff for your turbo kit let me know, ill steer you in the right direction. Use uberdata to tune, it runs $180 for the ecu and chip and base map

i am putting a k20 a3 in my 01 civic and its costing me about 5000 and i got the half cut cause i was doin a 5 speed swap also, so i think if u find sum1 thats good u can probably do it for about the same due to the labor would probably be more than it would for mine cause its almost a direct bolt in for mine and for the older body more work would be needed and little modificaions needed for my body style civic but im not really sure for the older body style civics cause their front ends are different but if i was u id go with the b18c unless u gonna try to get the k20A which would give u serious power
