Rather than keep everyone in the cold I decided to include the SQUAD in my buildups!!! I am currently working on 3 projects at the same time. Project #1 is the Rex (like everyone already knows), project #2 is my fiancee's 4dr eg, and last is project #3 is a EF hatch  (I'm about to show ya'll how to do one up :D )

I'm going to list the goals of the each car on it's own post.

The car
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g273/bigdare23/My%20Car/Car%20painted/MTN4.jpg

-fix my steering problem (replace rack and pinion, new wheel bearings and ball joints,...)
-repurchase a lip (since it was ripped off)
-purchase a carbon fiber hood
-refinish and install my SSR RS-8 rims
-upgrade my brakes (da knuckles and rear disc)
-repaint a few parts of my car
-wire tuck (chasebays ftw!!!)
-redo my suspension
-lastly, replace my block with a b20 block with apr rod bolts or build a high compression b16

hopefully I can be done with everything except the motor before the summer

There's the few things left for this car. I wasn't going all the way out since the wifey drives this (female drives ftl LOL) and it's an automatic.

The car
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g273/bigdare23/gina%20car/100_2039.jpg

As of now it has:
-jdm headlights w/ city lights
-jdm corners
-SiR lip
-Oem foglights
-Ferio ganishes
-SiR wing (not installed yet)
-JDM rain visors
-JDM mud flaps
-exhaust
-ricer taillights (old mod from 2003)
-17in rims (old mod from 2003 also)
-it was repainted black last August

the only things left to do are
-replace the wheels with something smaller
-suspension work
-redo the exhaust with something more oem
-red and clear taillights
-install side markers

All of this will be done by the end of February!

If you don't know already, I got a hatch on the way. I purchased Uproot's mother car as a DD (since it's an automatic). I decided to shut the game down with a budget build (>$2000 including the price of the car).

The Car
pics coming soon!!!

right now I need to fix the following:
-replace the sunroof
-replace the interior (stolen sunroof ftl)
-it seems like the passenger wheel has been push back (luckly I have experience with that :lmfao: )
-since the motor is having problems I'm going to replace it with either a zc, d16a5 or another d15b, but what ever I do, it's going to get converted to mpfi

Just because I'm a jdm whore :lmfao: I'm doing the following:
-rear disc converion
-getting a zc hood
-replacing the bumpers with ef3 bumpers
-installing my mugen mr5s on it
-installing the suspension setup I currently have on the rex
-installing jdm side skirts
-installing 88-89 body molding
-paint the car and running a red strip on the molding

here a old pic of my new rims (even tho they are used and I had them since august)

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g273/bigdare23/My%20Car/my%20car%20parts/IMG00019-1.jpg

I dropped them off at metro wheels today to get fully restored (they were bent and one had a crack). For the priced I paid to get them restored I could of gotten two sets of rotas

Now, I got to decide on what size tire to run, 195/50/15 or 205/50/15. H-T recomends 195/50/15 for 96 and below civics, but I kind like how the 205 looks. well I got to decide within the next hour or so, so i can order my new tires. If everything goes well, they should be on the car by next weekend!!!

Also, I'm about to press in new wheel bearing and ball joints in my spare da knuckles. While I do that, I'm installing new apr extended studs with opened lugnuts So hopefully I can have new rims with new brake this week.

Dare, man. Dibs on rex hood if it hits the market, and also keep me up on that b16 since you're going 20.

If you're doing another rear disc, let me know...I know of a good set for a damn good price right now...

You're gonna come the same day as Jermaine, sometime, and there's gonna be three EF's on the lifts, one on the frame rack, and one on the floor. Mark's gonna come out and be like "WHAT THE F*CK!?!?"

Update 1

I dropped up my tires off at Metro Wheels around 12pm today. He gave me a sneak peak of the wheels and they were bling'n (all except one). The one that needed weld was welded up, but just needed to be sanded down and polished. I will post pics up how they look before paint when I get home (around 5pm). :ninja:

Update 2
I just got an email saying my red/clear taillights for the Ferio just arrived!!! Hopefully they are the correct ones this time because the last time I ordered a set they shipped me hb ones. Pics of those are coming when I get home also.

Um, the sidewall is larger with 205/50-15 tires. The correct size for an EF with 15's is 195/50-15, so there's nothing wrong with Dare's setup.

I suppose yall are right about the sidewall being higher on the 205/50/15 than 195/50/15 but I still don't like 195s though. And yes I am use to riding on low profile, the 205/40/16 (Dunlop Direzza DZ101) on my wheels now have a low sidewall.

Darryl, just be ready to race whenever I call you for the numerous track events coming up in the next few months. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing the SE Drag Day but I'm almost positive I'm doing the Nopi NHRA drag event at Commerce March 29/30.

Well, I been working on the hatch for the past two weeks. At first, I thought the car may have a blown head gasket because it was driven hot, but I forgot about Honda's reliabilty :goodjob: . So I checked the car out and BAM found the problem. The radiator was crack where the cap goes. Also the radiator cap wasn't setting properly, so I replaced those parts. Next, I notice that oil was all over the bay, then I looked at the valve cover and the gasket wasnt properly set. So I replaced that and problem solved. Afterwards, I went to crank it....no power. Now, I'm pissed cuz it was about 11pm. So Guy and I went to Walmart and picked up a cheap battery. I throw that in and car had power, but it wouldn't turnover. DAMN!!!! :2up: So I checked the ecu and it showed code 16 which is the injector code. BINGO main relay. So I came back yesterday and installed a brand new main relay and the car started with no problem :goodjob:

Now, the only things left to do is bleed the brakes (it has no brakes what-so-ever, that's a post in it's self :lmfao:), replace some hoses, and it would be driven to my apartment by the end of the weekend. :goodjob:

Also, the people that want parts off of the car. I have the following for sell (cheap)

-front bumper (has a few scuffs and a small cut near the driver bumper lens)
-filler piece (mint)
-rear bumper (mint)
-hood (mint)
-headlights (driver side has a small hole)
-fenders (passenger side is bent but easy fix)

If you are interested LMK because I need to get rid of this stuff asap. I'm also willing to trade off parts for *new* (not used) cooling hoses LOL (no lie). So if you are interested in those parts, goto autozone, oreilly's, and/or advance and buy me some damn cooling lines!!!!

Actually, D, the HF bar would cause less understeer than the Si front bar. A common set up for our cars is the HF front bar with a Si rear bar to get the car to rotate better. Some people will even run no front bar with the Si rear.

LOL yesterday was a long day

I got to Uproot's apt around lunch time and fixed a coolant leak while JDMJAYDC2 installed an auto cluster with a tach. After checking for leaks, driving it around the complex and BS'ing with Jay and Uproot, I though it was road ready. I thought wrong LOL. After about 20mins of driving it started to over heat. So I had to start about 5 times. The last time, we pulled the thermostat out and ran it that way. It was werid because at certain angles the car would start to overheat and like going down hill it was cool. I think I may need to bleed the system a little better. So a 35min drive took about 3hrs LOL. So I got it home and Jay and I decided to throw on the JDM front and we called it quits around 1am. I would say it's about 90% done, and picture will be up later.

If everything goes as planned, the hatch will be getting towed to Columbus this weekend (since I'm moving back on campus). So Project EF Hatch is going to get push to the back burner (or is it :ninja: ).

Anyways, I been doing some research on b20vtecs with stock bottom-ends. I used to hear that was a big no-no, but now I see people safely revving theirs to 8.5k with just replacing oem rod bolts with arp rod bolts (I thought that mod was only good till pre8k revs). This got me wanting to do a b20vtec even more in the rex, since I wouldn't have to pay for the machining and such. Plus, I highly doubt I would ever race the car (that's what's the hatch is for :ninja: j/k or am I :ninja: ). Also, if you know me, I rarely hit vtec anyways. Just something for me to ponder.......

Since, I haven't done anything to the EG lately, I guess my focus is going to be here. So majority on my money this summer is going to go there. If everything goes as planned, I'm going to buy the following:

-springs (that ***** needs lowing bad LOL)
-struts (might as well since I'll be changing the springs)
-aftermarket LCAs (they look pretty badass)
-ASR rear brace and 24mm sway bar (not needed but why not :boobies: )
-rear disc conversion (a big maybe here)
-paint and install the SiR Ferio wing (had this thing since the summer so it gotta go on soon)
-new molding (faded black ftl)
-EK side skirts
-New exhaust (wifey been complaining about how loud it is, so I swapping out her welded muffler with a catback w/ silencer)
-new rims (a BIG maybe, we'll how things look after the car is dropped)
-header
-intake

done!!! That's should complete the look of the "JDM" EG Ferio. A swap maybe down the road (some thing simple like a d15b), but for now it's a all show car. :goodjob:

Now it's time to get the ***** running good! Hopefully, I'll get sometime to work on it this weekend. If I can get down to it this weekend, I'm going to work on the overheating problem some more. I believe I just got to flush the **** out of it since I noticed some gel on the thermostat. If I can't stop it from overheating this weekend, I'm going to pull the motor and start prep for the 5spd swap and mpfi conversion.

And I got that "technique" down pack!

Just purchased is rear anti-sway bar (the correct term). Summit has them in stock for $139 (i believe). They bad part is if you're a 88 crx driver (i dont know about hatch people), you have to buy a damn bracket (or switch to 89-91 lcas and struts) that costs an extra $50 !!! :2up:

Hopefully it's worth it. I would throw it on and come to the mountains with ya, but the head of house hold is coming down Thursday to visit. So that means I gotta wait to work on my car

StraightSix

Really? CSCC has a 1988 CRX Si as an autocross car, and it has front and rear ST sways and the rear bar drop links bolt to a hole in the '88 LCA. TMK, the '88 hatches should have the same rear LCA as the CRX.

I was looking at the mounting scheme to see if I could snag the rear bar for Barber this weekend, but no dice...and I don't want to swap suspensions.

Werid

The rear sway bar is made to be a bolt on affair for the 89-91 LCA, so it should have everything need to be a direct swap for your car. I believe with the 88s you actually mount the endlinks to a different location from 89-91. Jeff should be able to clear things up since he installed his not to long ago.

bigdare23
06-05-2008, 01:27 AM
As a result of wreaking my last car and buying another, I decided to writeup how to install a Suspension Techniques rear bar on a 89-91. Please note that I am transferring the bar over, so some parts of this are from memory.

Tools Needed
14mm socket (2 or socket + wrench)
17mm socket
Cold chisel and Hammer (see below)
Paint (optional)

Safety
You will be working underneath the car. Always place jackstands under the jack points. Do NOT work under your car supported solely by the jack (this is a cliche, but important). Also, glasses of some sort can help to keep dirt out of your eyes under the car.

Prep Work
Jack up the car and support it with jackstands. If you own an Si, you will need to take off your stock bar. This is done by removing the 14mm bolts holding the bar onto the control arms (1 per side) and the four bolts holding on the brackets, located just in front of the rear tow hooks.

If you are using shocks that have a welded nut to them, you will need to remove this using a cold chisel and hammer. Place the chisel at the base of the nut and knock it off (if you want, you can clean up this area and repaint it). This can be done on or off the car.
Shock before (simulation):
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/lessonsinspeed/CIMG1805.jpg
Shock after:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/lessonsinspeed/CIMG1807.jpg

Next, take off your rear tow hooks. Each is held on by three 14mm bolts.

Finally, you may or may not find it easier to remove the exhaust if you've got one.

Assemble the Bar
The bar can be assembled on or off the car. I already had it built, so I'll cover the assembly off the car.
All bolts/nuts in this section are 14mm.
First, grease up the bushings. Slip each one over the bar where it flattens out on the sides. Place the holder over each, and attach it to the brackets (Bolt-washer-bracket-washer-nut).
Completed bar:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/lessonsinspeed/CIMG1803.jpg

Next, assemble the end links. Attach onto the swar bar, inserting the bolt from the outside (bolt-washer-spacer-endlink-spacer-bar-washer-nut; keep in mind the pictures of the bar off the car have the link on the opposite side of the bar due to some fitament issues on my old car). A note here, I wouldn't place the bolt through the hole closest to the body of the bar (stiffest) if this is your first time with the swaybar. Start at either the far or middle whole, then stiffen it if you like.

Attach the other end of the link the the bracket, with the bolt head facing the inside of the bracket (bolt-washer-bracket-spacer-endlink-spacer-washer-nut).
Close-up (bolt attached to the bar is reversed):
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/lessonsinspeed/CIMG1804.jpg

Install On Car
Slide the bar in above the lower control arms. Attach the brackets to the tow hook holes with the provided 17mm bolts like so:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/lessonsinspeed/CIMG1810.jpg
You can choose to place your two hooks back on underneath the bracket if you'd like.

Once the bar is tightly attached to the car, attach each side to the shock. Assuming you have removed the lower shock mount bolts, place the bracket over the shock so that the lip is flush around the side:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/lessonsinspeed/CIMG1813.jpg
Attach this assembly with the 14mm bolt (bolt-washer-shock-LCA-shock-bracket-washer-nut).

Finish/Adjust
That's basically it. Make sure everything is tight, then lower the car back down and drive. From here you can fool around with adjusting the endlinks or changing the stiffness. I find the middle setting balances the car the best (with a stock DX or Si front sway at least), but it's all up to you.

*Thanks to lessonsinspeed from crxcommunity*

After looking at the install, you may not want to do it since you got to knock off the nut attached to the shocks.

Since I just installed my ST rear bar sway bar on the CRX, I'm going to install the old Si bar on the hatch. :D Also, I just picked up a rear disc conversion for the hatch also.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g273/bigdare23/My%20Car/The%20Hatch/IMG00107.jpg

Last, I ordered my bumper lens :D So my conversion is finally complete!!! I thought my bumper lens where used, but they turned out to be brand new :D

Last, I met up with JDM_DUCK (you need to change that BS Ryan :lmfao: ) and we did a little trade. I hooked him up with a b16 flywheel and Si Knuckles and he gave me a manual pedals and clutch cable. Now I have everything need to convert my car over to manual (if JDMJAYDC2 stop BS'n with the shift linkage!!!)

Keep you posted! :goodjob:

I love working again!!! MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! MONEY!!! MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! LOL

In prep for the mountain run, and because I'm tired of my car pulling to the damn right, I decided to fix the damn thing :D

So I'm replacing my bent rear crossmember, rack and pinion, and front crossmember :ninja: . I decided to tackle the job of rebuilding a spare rack I had (thanks scotsman). So I'm replacing my bushing and inner and outer tie rods in my spare Hf rack. Also, I'm installing ETD traction bars. I had Avid bars for a few months, but they did not have good clearance. So I got rid of them. Now I'm trying the traction bars again. I heard good and bad thing about ETD traction bars overall, but I haven't heard anything bad about their latest setup. I truly wanted Innovative traction bars, but I didn't want to wait for weeks at a time to get my bars. So I decided to go with my 2nd choice. I let ya know when everything get here and installed. If the shipping time is correct, everything should be installed by next weekend. :goodjob:

Since this was a long weekend, I decided to work on the hatch.

So my homie and I put in some wrench time and converted my hatch to rear disc. :D Since my new trailing arms had bad bushing, we install new energy suspension bushing. To install, we had to remove all the old rubber. So after an hour of playing with fire the trailing arms were free of rubber. :D The new bushing were easy to install! We installed them with a long as bolt (and nut), and two big ass washers. :boobies: Piece of cake! (I don't recommend ES trailing arm bushing, but since I'm building this car on a budget I decided to go cheap. I would install mugen or oem bushing in the CRX).

It's werid isn't it. The panels are the same color, the only difference is the hood and bumper colors are flipped.

Yeah I'm putting the HF rack in the rex. I really wanted to install the quick steering rack, but my budget was limited. Pluse I believe I would benefit more overall with the traction bars. :goodjob:

Since I last updated I got a Neuspeed front strut bar, and EDT 3rd gen Traction bars. I'll take pics soon. In addition, the CRX ****ing up (as seen in my thread http://www.importatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195983), so I need to fix that soon.

We were going to throw the other d15b2 in there, but we manage to ripe the automatic rear mount pretty badly and I didn't feel like converting the car over to manual so we decided to leave it with the motor out. Luckily we did, because I changed my mind on the direction I want the car to go. :D Just know the DD project is over and I'm about to build a beast :ninja: Basically, what I'm saying is the project is no where near over and just beginning for this hatch. I wont tell you the direction I'm going, I'll let my next update talk for itself.

Why is a b17 exhaust cam better than CTR intake and exhaust cams?

jfrolang

You can look up the specs, the B17 exhaust cam is the most aggressive OEM B-series exhaust cam. CTR intake is the best OEM intake cam, but he already has one of those.

Jeff,

Linky please, because every time I search for those specs I couldn't find any. On H-T, everyone that posted anything about them "said" they were just about the same as the b16 cams. Plus, didn't only Type R motors have dual valve springs on the exhaust said? Anything more aggressive then the lift of the CTR exhaust cam would of required dual valve springs, right?
