Its supposed to reduce the flow off heavy traffic all at once onto the highways, It lets one car at a time on to ease the slow down from 20 cars getting on in a line at once.
GA400 has them but they have been there for about a year and they still havent started using them, most are still covered in black plastic. To me that **** is a waste of money, It doesnt help traffic on bit.

The only thing that could help traffic is a more difficult driving test thats a bit more....I can't think of the word...but....uh....f*ck! More....damnit! Just harder and makes people pay more attention, and little bit more real world. That and a common (driving) sense requirement, and we'll be set. All our public roads would be able to operate like the damn Autobahn(sp?) or something.

It's so that people w/ spinners can stop real quick to get 'em spinning good b4 they floss on the highway.

If im right, they had these out in Cali for a while to help with traffic flow, and it actually did do a good bit.

They help the traffic on the freeway, but backup traffic on the surface streets leading to the freeway.
If they want to help traffic they need to setup road blocks, and get all these no license/no insurance, drunk, etc a-holes off the road.

sorry, it doesnt.
the stop lights are mainly used during rush hour. they already have them in Atlanta, been using them for a couple years.
the lights are programmed for every so many seconds to let one car through to keep a constant flow on the freeway and cause less congestion when people merge on.

It's because we are too damn dumb to comprehend merging.
Do you think America could manuever around a roundabout? An intersection that never stops moving...what a novel idea! It works fine in dozens and dozens of the worlds largest cities yet we could never do it.

As a whole they are great but please explain the GDOT's public cry for help all over the news/newspapers a few years begging for suggestions on how to help alleviate Atlanta's traffic congestion...

The on ramp traffic lights worked great in bigger cities, studies have proven it.
but they only work when used properly. Most people get lazy, and just dont stop and roll through the light, so in effect, they do nothing.
They started mounting cameras on the lights when i left Phoenix so they could give tickets to people who didnt stop.
Id like to hear the cost of the lights vs widening highways and see the data.
Someone said the traffic lights cost a couple million.
thats some crazy ****.
I still dont get it. Speed up to stop. Then when the light says to go you do 0-80 as fast as you can so you can get in the slow lane.
Yesterday with a car, trailer and slow truck i dont think i ever got under 75 down there in the slow lane.
Oh well i was just wondering what they where.

I didn't say everyday. But if they would do it on the weekends, at night, etc. There would be thousands more people without cars during rush hour. Just look at the arrest records on gwinnetts website for a given day. Over half the people they arrest are arrested for no license or no insurance. Add in the drunks, and it's more like 75% of the arrests. These are people they just happen to pull over. Not even 1% of the people that drive with no insurance or license are getting caught.

Someone said the traffic lights cost a couple million.A normal intersection the last time I checked was up to $250,000+...depending on the size and complexity of the intersection. I'm sure these lights would be considerably less considering it's essentially only 1 sensor vs. at least 4 not including turn lanes.
I don't recall sensors be layed at the end of the onramps or in the freeway/expressway/highway lanes so I'm sure they are tied into the Georgia Navigator camera radar system to determine the flow... :dunno:

I never would have guessed.

I think that putting these lights on the freeways is kinda like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. If Atlanta really wants to reduce the traffic on the freeways then they need to offer MUCH better public transportation. Not just in the city of Atlanta either but in the entire metro area. Until that happens I don't see Atlanta's traffic situation getting much better.

The traffic problem is only going to get worse, I can't remember where but I read they were predicting close to 5 million people are going to be moving here in the next 10-15 years.

That's the problem in the first place. Rapid OVER expansion. I don't know the exact figures, but the population of Georgia, especially metro Atlanta, has grown exponentially in the past 10-12 years or so.
ironchef

Its not the expansion thats the problem, its that the infrastructure to handle the expansion isn't up to par.

They use them going from Spring Street to 75/85 South. They are only turned on during busy times of the day though so there is a backed up line anyways (no speeding up to slow down). At night when roads are a lot less congested you don't have to worry about them.
I also noticed them quite a few times when I was out in San Diego this summer.

yea those traffic lights are a waste of money, all they do is cause more congestion from people not knowing what to do at them. What needs to happen is more businesses allow people to work from home and also have 4 day work weeks. Oh and another idea is not to allow any 18 wheelers cross into the perimeter or on 285 that are passing through atlanta during rush hour, have big parking lots outside of the perimeter where they park during the rush hour(s).

you know that 18 wheelers are not even allowed inside 285 unless they have business in there right?
if they are just going through Atl they have to take 285 i believe
